What if the steel wheels underneath the honeycomb are rusty?

Any recommendations if you have a decent amount of surface rust to deal with under the trim rings? I have a '71 Formula 400 with a build sheet that said it came factory with the Honeycomb wheels. Would like to keep it factory, but the wheels I have need a more serious restoration than what is described here (although, very helpful!!). Any advice from anyone that knows or has done this work? Can the Honeycomb insert be removed and then epoxied back into place? I don't want to "experiment" with any of my wheels, if possible. Thanks!! |

I did these with the OER magnesium wheel paint & SEM primer that according to one guy that bashes anyone that uses it is "CL gravel driveway resto" LOL! Been holding up great for about 10 years now and looks like the day I did them. Quote:

I'm also happy with my "driveway Craigs List" resto using OER paint. I actually did the work in my driveway, too. Figure that. Sandblasted the wheels, used two part flexible epoxy to fix the big flaws, lots of sanding - similar to what you'd do for an Endura bumper. Came out good enough for our driver Ventura.
Agree that just because the paint comes in a rattle can and isn't from an auto body supply shop doesn't mean it's not quality. If you have the equipment, space, time and money to go Kindig on your stuff, have at it. Not all of us do. I also agree on finding a better set of wheels if the rust is under the urethane. Post some pics of what you're working with. https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1764696274 https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1764696184 |
Those look great!
Ive also painted rally 2 wheels with good Eastwood & other brands of SPRAY CAN paint, 12+ years on my my car & look like the day I did them. Not everyone has access to paint guns or cares to use them when there are good options for the hobbyist or home resto type. Constant complaining about a brand of paint countless people use with great results or bashing people who use it gets old real quick... |
Personally I miss magazines

Check out Vice grip garage, he does the CL Resto.
I did my flakes in the 80’s. Used quality paint, they are still nice. If it’s work investing time and money, it’s worth doing rite. You don’t have to go to kindig to use quality paint and do it rite. |
I'll send some pictures tomorrow. Will be helpful to get your advice/confirmation that the wheels I have are worth restoring or not. The car does have a lot of rot in very unfortunate places, so.... A bit of a passion project... :D:eek:

I’d be more concerned about the rust in the car.

I wouldn't put too much clout in someone that drives a '95 Infiniti Q45.. Doesn't get anymore craigslist than that..

72 Grand Prix Honeycombs
Your Honeycomb project looks great to me. Looking for a little advice on mine if you don’t mind. I have some on a 72 GP that are honestly in pretty good condition with just some minor blemishes. They may have been touched up before. I really just want to give them a fresh topcoat using the OER Magnesium. What type of sanding and primer should I be doing and using. I can post pics later.
Thanks!! Quote:

Thanks, Im very happy with them doing similar to the HPP article, countless other people on here & out there in the real world have done the same with excellent results... the rally 2 & HC wheels I did are 10+ years old and look like the day I did them...
If yours are as nice as you say and just need a top coat, I would skip the heavy sanding or primer & just scuff up the current paint if its in good condition, meaning not dried out or chipping/flaking... if the paint is good and no chips or damage to fill with a 2 part epoxy product, You can probably just use a medium grit sand paper like 400 to scuff the surface then spray with the OER magnesium paint, it covers very good so if its just a top coat 1 can will probably do all 4 wheels with 2 medium coats. But if you go further & need primer, the SEM flexible prinmer mentioned in teh article works great. Whatever you decide is important to clean them very good of any dirt, grease, wax, etc, standard prep procedures when painting anything. Also ive read & found doing a small test, is that this paint OER paint doesnt like clear coats, it will dull the light "sparkle" and silver color, rally2 paint isnt effected like this OER paint that has a slight texture to it. But if they arent on a daily driver or car that sees high miles, the OER will hold up & clean up very good for many years to come. With that said, there are better ways to do these like buying paint and spraying with a gun or having a pro do them, but using the paint/process explained in the HPP article will have very good results. |
Thank you for the advice. Any chance you have a link for the HPP article you mentioned

I need some help on this Honeycomb project. I top coated one rim on the left, but had to primer the second then top coat on the right. The result is two very different colors and looks. The left keeps the original look from what I can tell but not sure what to do next. The other 3 rims could all probably be just top coated to match. Thoughts, ideas and help please.

Those look great, thanks for sharing…

What color primer did you use?
