The Crow
|
All steel! well the back half LOL I Didn't care for the crowmod other than being Pontiac Powered. Cant wait to see it run!
|
So glad to see that!!!!
|
That's awesome!
|
That is a gorgeous car, I like it better in black too.
|
The car is obviously Marty Palbykin's 70 GTO as the Judge stuff is still on the rear quarters, but, I have heard that Big Chief is personalizing a few things on the car.
Hope to see it soon on one of the new seasons of SO shows. Tom V. |

This guy speculates he is running the same small block Pontiac from the old car. |
I was told the driveline and engine would basically be similar to the previous Crow Pontiac engines but now with the CV1-1 cylinder heads and intake manifold parts.
Tom V. |
Not sure who the guy is doing the narration, but he could have been better. The Cro-Mod certainly does not have a Titanium Chassis as stated. Also, I never seem to get a handle on the Small Block/Big Block crap with the Pontiac engine. To me and people who know the Pontiac engine, I guess the small block would be the 61-63 4-cyl.? That's a "small block" Pontiac, missing 1/2 of it's cylinders. Fairly certain the new crow would have the 482 iron block IA II he has been running for years, with a switch down the road to the all aluminum solid block IA II he also has. That is probably the block the CV heads will be going on. That's just my guess. It should be an interesting year for the show and Chief's program.

If anything our Pontiacs are "mid-size" blocks. I havent asked which block so dont have an answer. I'd speculate the iron block gets CV1's similar to/same as Fultons with something in a larger port for the aluminum block. We will find out when it debuts I guess. Glad hes going with black... "Crow" and white just never seemed to fit IMO |
Chief explained, in one of the episodes, that it was easier for others (non Pontiac people) to understand it as a "small block" because of it's relatively "small" cubic inch compared to what others were running at the time.
|
he explained it in a thread here also, and why he called the 72 lemans a 70 Judge

I'd bet the car will look just like the old Crow. |

So the above video was shot at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA. Anyone know why he brought the car all the way out here?

The Vegas track is 4 hours closer, nicer, and the area has other perks. Although I'm sure a day rental at Fontana is much cheaper than Las Vegas.

Billed as Mega Race, Fast and Loud guys meets Big Chief, 3/27 on TV.
Farmtruck and Asin are also doing a drag race and autocross race against Aaron Kaufman, who just quit Gasmonkey. Richard Rawlings was crying when Aaron told him he was quitting. |
Now it becomes clear. I didn't want to spread rumors, but had heard that Chief was in California filming for a TV series. Our local talk was there might be some sort of spinoff of Street Outlaws, but that didn't really seem right. So he was out here for a different series, but it was filming the Fast and Loud segment.

They've all gone Hollywood!

His original 72 Lemans was a Luxury Lemans... Not a fan of gas monkeys... |
I will tune in. Glad to see the Crow is back in some capacity. I can sink my teeth into an all steel home built car. As a fan, I couldn't wholly invest in the Crowmod car. Besides, I have a special place in my heart for any Lemans of the 1972 vintage.;)
OK, so here is a question for you faster guys: At any point do you "strip it back" some, i.e., put together a slower car to keep things simple? Or do you always seek better and faster where nothing else lesser will do? Can you still get as much enjoyment out of a slower and cheaper bracket car once you have tasted the "milk and honey"? This thread made me wonder that stuff a little. I play at the low/slow end of the hobby. |
"A true hotrodder wouldn't be content untill he had created a car so violent, so hairy, so totally sick that the very act of dropping the hammer would result in instant death. Anything less results in the need to go faster." - Tony DeFeo

Will say one thing, those guys know how to "milk" every opportunity.

I think the whole show has been a great marketing deal for the auto industry as a whole. Not even to mention the exposure that Pontiac has gotten. |

Take however YOU want, though. Big Chief's whole deal has been scienced out from a marketing/business proposal to one of the best shows on the automotive side of the web/TV market. Tom V. |
MEGA RACE UNFOLDS......
So last night we see Chief picking up only the rear clip and bare chassis from Marty Palbykin in Phoenix. I was under the impression that he bought a rolling chassis, obviously not. That's the reason that the YouTube video shows doors from the donor Crow on the finished car.
Farmtruck and AZN switch from a 80s Malibu and a LS2 for their build, to a 76 T/A former race car with a real Pontiac Stratostreak engine. I even put the upcoming trailer on SLOMO last night to verify they didn't yank the Pontiac and install the LS2, good news the Pontiac engine stayed. So Mega race comes down to Chief running Marty P s old chassis with his old reliable turbo "PONTIAC SMALL BLOCK"...LOL. Against a pro mod with a blown Hemi built by Gas Monkey driven by the Laughlin guy of pro stock fame. In the other half of the matchup (dragstrip, autocross, and one undetermined event) its Aaron Kaufman with a 90s BMW with a LSX transplant, vs Farmtruck and AZNs 76 T/A, that looks to be a former road race car and still has a Pontiac engine in it. The people on this forum have 2 underdog Pontiacs to cheer for!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who's going to win? Vote here for your choice http://www.discovery.com/MegaRace/ |
If your a Pontiac fan, we have already won! 50% of the entire "racing" program will feature an "obsolete, ancient engine that has been out of production 36 years". There will be some serious head shaking if they win on top of that.

Works for me. My 72 Lemans/70 GTO clone.

The "Back Half" typically gets mods when a racer buys a vehicle as each racer has their own ideas on what they want (for example a "no prep" track chassis). Tom V. |
I wonder if Chief sold the BAE in Marty's car to Gas Monkey. Or if the producers bought Marty's car and gave Chief the shell and Richard the engine. It is reality TV after all. Shawn was on YB answering some questions and said he'd give more details after next week's episode. He did not sound happy.
|
Not to state the obvious BUT you guys do know the race has been run already?
GTO George |
Yes George, it was supposedly run at least a month ago, thing is that there seems to be no knowledge of who won it.

What they showed on TV was just rear sheetmetal from the firewall back, there was no stock front frame on the car that I could discern, it was all tube, at least from the quick glance on the TV show. Quite easy to see it with no front nose on the car. Just from the quick glance it looked to be set up for a rack for steering, and coil over front suspension on tubular A arms. I never saw a hint of an original GM frame, looked to be chrome moly tubular front to rear. 4 guys carried the whole thing off the trailer. Also they robbed parts off of the Crow Mod to build the GTO and I know there aren't any stock frame components on that car. I could have missed it, but I was actually looking for the stock front frame last night. It didn't look like a back half car at least to my untrained eye. The rules they talked about last night didn't mention a back half car, just steel roof and quarters and a VIN tag. 500 cube limit, and it was also supposed to be 1967-72. GMG has a 2015 challenger so it doesn't quite fit either. I know that Marty is a friend of yours, so maybe in the dim lighting I missed something, just seemed like it was a full tube chassis car, at least to me. I looked at the 30 second trailer for last nights show and stopped it when they did a front to rear view of the chassis and body shell and although it's a crappy view it looks to be all tube under the floor and from the firewall forward. As I said it's not a clear view and it's like one second long. |

anyone notice the trans am had round port heads? I believe that car was on ebay years ago. if not, it was it's twin. had a 455 with IV's and came with SD's. or vice versa, it's been awhile. sold somewhere in the 5K range.

From the little bit I saw on YouTube showed Chief pulling away from the Gas Monkey car. Looking forward to seeing the actual outcome but I think the GTO put it to them big time.

Just saw the episode, and enjoyed it. I was excited that a black primer monster might race again. I liked the old black Crow, and it complements Chief's '70 daily driver. Good times.

The "Judge" vehicle was a double tube chassis Race chassis built by Jeff Covey on a Frame Jig. Marty's car was I believe the 9th or 10th 25-1C type chassis (been years ago and the rules changed) that Jeff built on the jig. So where you get the Stock front frame/back half deal is a new one on me. The Judge front chassis was originally designed for a front plate (elephant ear) off the heads to the chassis and mid plate deal if I remember correctly. The engine ALWAYS had a dry sump system, always had fuel injection, always was a boosted engine. It always ran a 406 Pontiac engine for 3 years (until the 406 block started to crack) and then a POS BB Chebby block was installed for a short period of time. It had issues immediately. So you confuse me on this info you have posted. Tom V. |
