1970 GTO 400 Spark plugs
Does anyone know why the spark plugs on my 1970 GTO 400 engine have AC Delco plugs #R45TS with a gap of 0.040 and the Haynes Manual says R45S with a gap of 0.035? It also has an HEI distributor, and a 4bbl Holley carb, if that makes any difference. The R45TS has 5/8 socket size. Appreciate any help. JCIWOLF:

HEIs usually use a little wider gap.Tom

What casting number cyl heads are on the engine?
Tapered seat plugs weren't used on '70 model heads. |

So far I have no idea what this means, but I know the number 7 spark plug is a royal pain to replace thanks to the steering shaft going right in front of it. I suspect this is routine for most goats. Can't find any numbers on either head, only numbers are 1043 and 1063 right and left plus the gm3 on both. If there are more than that it would have to be further up on the heads and no offense I don't want to pull the covers. Any other ideas would be welcome. jciwolf

My only other thought is that if the heads had been "worked" as in ported or any other machine shop work to the heafs it may be a common practice to grind off the factory head numbers to indicate that they are no longer stock factory heads. I too have unmarked heads on my 455 and they have had port work and valve work done to them. Just a theory really.

Thank You Dennis for this information. I just got paper work from a previous owner who had work done on this car. Apparently he had the motor bored and the cam enlarged. He said he wanted to restore the car, but new child and lack of body skills and wiring and of course the big enemy, money. I will be reading the paper work and motor service report this weekend. at the end of the day the seat for appropriate spark plugs changed on heds for either 1972 or 1973 (I'd have to look into it);
A 1970 400 (with lets say) #13 heads should use R45S plugs If my memory serves me correct, the "t" (tapered seat) heads used the same heat range, but just went to the T plugs; I believe that R45TS should be correct. Going off memory: R = Resistor(?) 45 = heat range (numerically lower indicates a cooler plug) T = Tapered seat S = this is either 'radio Suppresion' - or something to do with the tip. I know the OE plugs for my car (#12 heads) are R44S which is one heat range cooler - this is a plug that is long since NLA; In the past I have run either R43S (which I think are now also discontinued), or R45S - which I believe are a smidge too hot for my compression... I have sourced some R44's and 44S plugs; I am sure I could find someone to suggest that if I see Delco plugs in the 44 heat range, I see nearly become unhinged. ;) |
Well if I don't get logged out I'll state what I have found out about this 1970 GTO. The previous owner head the original motor bored and stroke because the 455 head wanted to put in was damaged beyond repair. Instead of buying a new motor he had this motor bored and stroked, to 4.15 x 4.21. New crank , don't know what brand or #'. A Lunati cam, also don't have #'s either. All and all at the time of everything being done, he had himself a brand new motor with tons of items from Jegs, Flowmaster, and Stainless Steel Brakes Corp. Due to a lack of total motor knowledge, there is a multitude of unanswered questions I have. First there are no wiring diagrams of added parts and deleted parts, also some of these I have no idea what they are. For example, I have a sensor on the right side of the intake manifold,( passenger side), that is three wire and no idea how it is supposed to be wired in. Guessing 1 wire is power,(black with red tracer), 1 green possibly ground, and 1 dark blue think this may be signal but where does it go? So many more things, I have opened the harness and found cut wires and a lot of splices that are not factory and were done pretty bad. I think this is long winded enough, but I want to thank everyone who has replied to this wonderful journey!! jciwolf:huh:

The sensor on the right, passenger side, is a three wire unit /w green, black red tracer, and dark blue. Don't know where the dark blue goes, possibly signal wire??
I tried to get a hold of offenhauser but no luck, not even by phone. I believe it it a 360 degree model, asked Summit but they don't know either... they only sell them!!! Any help appreciated. Thanking everyone for their support and advice jciwolf |

I have the manuals on this car and the wiring diagrams separate from the manuals. They still don't help. I am going wire for wire on this, also learning more than I thought I would but I'm retired Johnson Controls Senior Technician so used to wiring problems and researching wiring different from tech diagrams. I thank You for the advice though, trying to short cut the tracing if possible. jciwolf

I thank you for the help, however, my "70 GTO has the same wiring as the diagram you supplied but the dk blue wire goes to the distributor not the terminal block. I have an HEI distributor and it makes the wiring a bit different. I have opened the wire harness and have a dk blue, and two black wires cut off and taped. I have checked all three of these and no power period, I believe these are the original signal wires from the TCH and Auto trans solenoid. No TCS solenoid on the back of my power steering pump. I have power on the dk blue wire from Temp sending unit in acc mode. It drops power when turning the ignition on causing no spark. It seems like in start mode something opens up but have not found it yet. The mystery continues. Thanks again. jciwolf

The dark blue wire from the intake fitting goes to the solenoid shown in HFR's pic on the back of the head, which controls the vacuum advance to the distributor.
What most people do is throw all that stuff away? Unless doing a concours restoration? That is an emission setup from the early stages of emission controls back in 1970. (also basically to keep you from flooring it and running hard while cold) As to the engine size that would be a 455 cid engine now. Not sure what it originally started life as, but can be called a 455. :) |
Thank You for the info, however I have an HEI distributor with the 12vdc terminal and the tach terminal. All the early TCS and Auto trans are gone and wiring is different. The Dark Blue from the temp sending unit now goes to the 12vdc terminal on the distributor. What used to work is not working now, I loose the voltage to the distributor causing no spark. Having no updated wiring diagram from the new work is making me go wire to wire to track where it loses voltage. I'm sure you would not have a problem with your background in racing, but this is my first muscle car wiring and restore to a drive. Learning though is frustrating but challenging and I take a challenge seriously. I think from this point on I will take pictures and look at the diagrams of the '70 originals and compare and change the diagrams to what is now on the car. OK enough for one night, I don't want to bore anyone more than I have. Thanks again jciwolf

Trying to understand the situation. With the HEI addition, I was wondering why the interest in getting the TCS working. The blue wire should not be used to power anything I would say. (plus it originally had no connection to making the distributor to work) It's best to think of the wiring as sections. If you need to work on the distributor, just concentrate on that section. (which the TCS is not part of) Basically the distributor (in your case) needs a switched 12 volts to make it work. If it gets 12 volts with key on, then it should work. Doesn't really matter where that 12 volts comes from but usually want it to be a dedicated wire. As to the emission circuit, I'd just tape the ends up. (since you don't have all the components) Tell us what doesn't work and we could figure it out. :) |

I haven't looked at your diagram link but I will after this note. Today I checked three wiring diagrams, all with slightly different things and wiring. They did all point to the pink and black/wire from the ignition switch. I ran a new wire as the original is gone due to updates, to the distributor 12 vdc terminal, which only gives voltage with the ignition on. I put the car in acc and the wire had 12 volts, when I put the wire back on the distributor and tried to start it all voltage disappeared! If I wait a minute or two, now in shock, the voltage comes back, At this stage it was 7pm my time and time to roll it in. Saturday I will check for shorts, not sure if my distributor is a problem or my voltage regulator? Best way I know how is to disconnect the battery first and check for grounded wiring, by testing the + side to ground and then + to -. I will find it, just hoping it isn't something worth big $$$$$.
