i've often wondered, but have no idea - anyone have any ideas how many T/As were 'abused' during filming?

can't begin to imagine how many times i watched that movie...

This is because ALL the Birds were 1976 Model Trans Am's ( GASP!! I said it!)
I saw what looked like scrap heaps at Universal in 1978. There was also two or 3 promotional cars made. I think these were 77's. The original 4 were NOT Oldsmobile engine cars, even though they looked like it. I actually looked under the hood of 2 . One got a rocket for the bridge. had a roll cage in it .
in 85 there was a long row of '82's used in knight rider at the same location.

77 Canamman 05-24-2017 07:51 AM

I was always told that all of the Pontiacs used in the filming were crushed at a junkyard in Jonesboro, GA at the conclusion of the filming. This was directed by PMD, due to liability reasons. Witnesses said that parts were stolen off the crushed heaps, so those parts still might exist to this day. It would be hard to prove that they were removed from said cars.

Also, the 6.6 Litre shaker callouts were also used on the base 180 HP Trans Ams in 1977, along with the Oldsmobirds.

i understand the liability issues, but it's a shame some of the originals didn't make it past the crusher. i'm sure PMD had a representative at the yard making sure every car was crushed. it is interesting though that one of the main 'Bullit' cars was recently found in Mexico. maybe a real Bandit car will surface one day.

Formulabruce 05-24-2017 11:43 AM

Those decals were NOT on a '76 , so they got added by the film crews. Could be what I saw was promo cars and a a wreck of one . Universal "Bought" these cars. At a discount only because they made them look like a '77's They were all left over 76's. Oh well. its all history.

we went to see it last night and before the movie they were posting trivia about the movie on the screen and this popped up.. hmmm wonder if its actually true. And the movie was just as funny today as it was 40 years ago!

77 Canamman 05-25-2017 07:35 AM

I don't know if all of the rest were stock, but I have been told for a long time that the bridge jump car was fitted with a Chevrolet stock car engine, since it needed to get up to high speed on a dirt surface quickly.

Cool info > All 1976 T/A'S were still powered by 400 & 455 Pontiac V8's just think if the SB T/A's were 1st sent to A Pontiac shop etc. to get hopped up - like this bran new 12 sec. 455 powered 1975 T/A built for Export by Motion Performance :)

I actually know Ronnie Gay who is a state Trooper in the area i grew up in. He did stop me one day in my SE T/A and gave me a warning. Later that week I saw him at McDonalds and we talked abut the movie. The chevy engine that was put in the T/A that made the jump was out of Hal Needam Nascar team race car, so it wasn't a stock engine.
Also the T/As used in the movie were 1976 Trans Am, so they were 400 with a 2.56 gear, not the best combo for a bridge jump. If you notice, that is a 8 grand tach, it's from the movie when Sally says he was going 110.

I went to HS with the girl in these photos, she also the same person with the picture of Fred. When Burt was in town at a film fest here in Macon, I had him sign my Georgia plate for my Y-81 T/A.

I went with the 8k tach in my '77, along with the perforated '76 seats and door panels.

Ronnie is supposed to be present during the Bandit Run/Snowman Run festivities in Jonesboro in June.

I just finished reading Burt's book ( But Enough About Me ) and it's a great book. All about his life.

Cool info - for the bridge jump I read they need the lightest motor and a NASCAR 355 did the job - Otherwise it would be to nose heavy even if got 500 hp out of a 400 or 455 which Leader - Nunzi - Royal Automotive - etc. could easily do at the time - like this 10 sec. RA IV 455 Firebird out of Royal Automotive 1970 - 71 .
