HO Manifolds Good Deal Alert!

RARE is selling their oversized manifolds in a kit on eBay right now. Heck of a deal as their manifolds alone are over $400 everywhere. Also available for the 64-7 too. I just bought mine!

It'd be great to see the long branches at that price.

grivera 09-25-2017 09:46 PM

That is a great price!

Hammertime Mike 09-26-2017 09:52 AM

Good timing for this. I'm putting a 64 conv. together and was planning on using those manifolds. I'll be ordering the kit.

stich 09-26-2017 10:35 AM

Just jumped on this bandwagon. Thanks for the heads up

vitamin c 09-26-2017 10:55 AM

Where are the 73-74 round port super duty manifolds?

ponchjoe 09-26-2017 07:29 PM

You SD guys have more $ so they don't discount them.
Just Kidding, give them a call maybe they can help.

I've talked to that guy, he sells the PYPES version which have been on backorder for eternity. When he has them in stock he knocks off the 3k.

I talked to Ccass about waiting for there's but it's gone from Aug to now late Oct

Good to know. I don't mind waiting but late oct is too long. I've had the Pypes manifolds on backorder for a while now. Already got the down pipes.
I went ahead and pulled the trigger on these so I can get it put together sometime soon.
Now I have an extra set of down pipes. Anybody need a set?

I guess the new price of $2379.00 means it's over?

Not yet, paid with pay pal on the 27th.

ponchjoe 09-29-2017 10:01 AM

Mine arrived yesterday ordered on the 25th

tstroud 09-29-2017 11:02 AM

I paid with PayPal evening of the 26th, so essentially the 27th. I'm sure they will ship soon.

I don't get that... How does one go in and change the price?

have a local customer that's ready to buy a pair of the '68-72 RAIII's/downpipes. If offered, at that price, I'd buy a pair of the 2.5 roundports/downpipes, though have perfect original manifolds.

tstroud 09-29-2017 12:25 PM

The description now says they are out of LH Castings and they will re-activate the listing when they get more.
Just guessing here but I would say the new price is meant to deter purchases until they have stock again. Killing this listing and re-listing again later would probably mean more fees.

Looks like mine just shipped this afternoon. Woo Hoo!

Ok guys, I pulled mine out to prep them for the Por15 Manifold coating just now, BE CAREFUL, every edge is razor sharp. I expected these to be higher quality coming from RARE as bare castings. Maybe that's why there's a sale???

They will be better after priming and coating but watch your fingers!!!

tstroud 09-29-2017 07:17 PM

So, these are bare castings not cnc port matched? I can match and deburr them myself. Just wanting to know what to expect.

Tstroud, when I said bare I meant no coating, they have been opened up and are 2.45 on the outlet but they are raw from a deburr perspective. I sent them a note asking why their quality system would allow them to ship such a sharp part. I'll post back when I hear. I also asked if these were seconds due to this issue. Maybe yours will be different.

HO Manifolds Good Deal Alert!

I have a die grinder and I know how to use it and I don't mind doing it. Just need to schedule some time if they need some work.
I would still like to know what they say.

Haven't heard anything yet but couldn't resist...

Formulajones 10-01-2017 11:13 AM

Just an FYI, back in 2015 I bought a set from Ames for a regular price of $399. So anything in that range I'd consider a decent price. I'm surprised to see some of the prices you guys are posting over $2,000 :pound:

These guys must have figured a way to save money by keeping their original listing open and changing the price when they are out of stock. eBay hasn't caught on yet but they will, they know how to get blood out of a turnip.

Ah okay gotcha. I was wondering what was going on there. Seemed odd to me to see the price jump all over the place. So I thought I'd post what I paid 2 years ago figuring anything in that range would probably be a decent deal today. I read through more posts and didn't realize these things were getting so difficult to obtain. Thanks Ponchjoe.

tstroud 10-01-2017 05:48 PM

I am supposed to get mine tomorrow. :)

tstroud 10-02-2017 07:43 PM

The manifolds arrived today. They look pretty good but there are definitely some very sharp edges that need addressed. A few minutes with the die grinder and they will be really nice.
What are people using for a coating on these?

These headpipes have some bends in them that I didn't see in the Pypes headpipes. I will have to compare them more closely since i have both here now.

Formulajones 10-02-2017 08:32 PM

The cheapest and easiest coating would be the POR15 grey manifold paint. I just brush it on right out of the can. Stuff is tough as nails. I've had it on one of the cars for 2 years now daily driving it and it still looks like the day I applied it.

This is what I used and have 2 other times. I put VHT High temp primer under it and then grill it at 300 for 30 minutes.

Formulajones 10-02-2017 09:42 PM

I put mine in the oven, don't ever do that

I spent the rest of the day with windows open and the fans on trying to air out the house before my wife got home. :pound:

tstroud 10-02-2017 10:38 PM

There was some really sharp machining burrs on the manifolds but it didn't take long with a die grinder and a carbide burr to smooth things up. They are really nice now. Not really a big deal considering the price.
I can get some POR 15 manifold paint in the next town over tomorrow.

tstroud 10-03-2017 10:30 AM

I hope the grey works better than the aluminum high temp paint from POR15.
I used the aluminum twice on some SBC exhaust manifolds. I sandblasted them and washed them with the prep spray before painting and they still burnt off after just a couple drives.
To be fair, I did not bake them in an oven. I cured them on the vehicle so it may not have worked so well.

ponchjoe 10-03-2017 06:00 PM

Don't forget Por 15 primer or another very high temp primer like VHT

tstroud 10-03-2017 06:49 PM

Next question.
What are you using for gaskets since these come with none.

I plan on using factory style metal gaskets. That's what I used on my dad's 66 about 15 years ago.

tstroud 10-03-2017 09:40 PM

The factory style gaskets that came in my Fel Pro kit do not have a divided center ports. Do some of the stamped steel gaskets have divided center ports?
