455 Intake for EFI
Planning to install Sniper EFI under a 70 TA shaker hood. Stock rebuilt 1975 455 with 6H-6 heads so thinking a Voodoo 704 cam & lifters.
From all my searches I see that the Performer intake will be mediocre at best. Most threads turn into drag-race discussions. What street intake do y'all suggest to fit the square-bore Holley? |
Holley Street Dominator (They are still out there) (new in some cases) along with your Holley Carb Clone EFI system. You know that will package with a Shaker.

I am running a torker II on my street 455 with the FiTech. Previous to that I had a P4B on there and I had some fuel distribution issues with the throttle body injection and that specific dual plane manifold. This intake has worked really well with the combination. it makes gobs of power from off idle to 5700 rpm in my combination.
One of the very first posts in the big FiTech thread discusses hogging out the plenum on a factory intake to fit the square bore, which would also be an option for you. One thing to also keep in mind is that Holley does sell a bottom portion of a drop base air cleaner with provisions to clear the fuel inlet/outlet on the tbi. That will give you a bit more room with the shaker. |
The Tomahawk manifold or the Holley Street Dominator as Tom says. Both work well with a stock or slightly modified engine and a Holley square bore carb. The Holley street dominator has rather small runners that provide good velocity for a close to stock combo but with big cam, big cubes and ported heads it would need some port work. The Tomahawk was patterned after the Holley manifold but flows more air for a modified engine.

I haven't checked as I don't have EFI yet but hopefully my shaker setup will adapt with the EFI throttle body using the taller RPM or Tomahawk.

I modified a SR 72 455 HO intake. Factory parts fit perfectly.

The 75 intake will be cast iron and will be harder longer to grind on, and it also has the EGR hole. I bought the NOS 72 service replacement intake for $400 so it was a no brainer to go factory parts. Haven't gotten around to hooking up the linkage yet.

If you are not in a rush to get the intake, then maybe wait a bit.
I'm hoping to have the FAST EFI system up and running on my '73 T/A clone by the end of next month. Once I've got it running properly, I'm hoping to borrow a few intakes and do some chassis dyno testing. |
Looking at the "yahooskidoo" photo above, I doubt my shaker assembly will adapt. The throttle body has the "outboard" components that would clash with WFO dropped base design.

There has been some testing done recently that indicated that single plane works better with EFI. You might want to research that.

Was the study with direct port fuel injection with injectors to each intake valve or Single-point that just replaces the carb ? Or both types ?

It was one of those Friedberger youtube videos - Engine masters dyno testing. I remember that result was a surprise to them. I don't trust my memory too much these days which is why I suggest one does their own research.

There's always a compromise when using a 'carb' intake for an EFI conversion. As I recall, back in the 90s when I was first doing EFI conversions, that for port injection systems, single plan intakes were favored.
Dual plane intakes work better for TBi type conversions, for the same reasons, up to a point anyway, when using a carb. The runners are designed to increase port velocity at lower RPMs, and improve atomization. Only time I can think of when a single plane in an EFI conversion might cause issues is when it's a borderline config between a single and dual plane. Extreme example is if you put a victor intake on a stock 326 2bbl and expect a performance gain type scenario. With a TBi type conversion, all the same principles apply as if with a carb. Port injection, batch or sequential, you can be more selective with intakes, and take advantage of certain aspects, and tune to overcome some of the usual drawbacks. (Like low speed velocity) Try not to overthink it. It's very safe to use a TBi setup if you have knowledge of carb tuning, there's a distinct crossover of theory/design. If you learn the difference between TBi and port (theory & design), you have all the bases covered. If it's a fairly conservative build, you should be fine with either. Tuning can compensate for minor design oversights. . |
You could go port EFI or TB (cap the injector bungs) with this one. This was based of the Holley Street Dominator when Kenny Brewer (Ace) was running Pacific Performance Racing.

Thing is, you still want to match the intake type/design to the cam/use intended for the car. . |
if i am not mistaken it was the enginemasters youtube show test , and that was a throttlebody style EFI.
