Pypes 3" exhaust with Race Pro Mufflers
 

Bought the Pypes kit SGF15R to clear a DSE Quadra-link on a 2nd Gen Trans Am. Love the fit but the drone is pretty intense at highway speeds. The motor is a 535 making 700+ hp.

Any suggestions? I'm considering the Kindig exhaust cutouts since they will fit nicely at the ends of the x-pype in this car but would need a muffler that isn't so loud to replace the Race Pros without killing performance.

IMO any straight through muffler is going to sound about the same, especially with that much power. the dynomax super turbos are much quieter but probably not the best for performance compared to a straight through muffler.

Anyone using the Dynomax VT mufflers? They are supposedly "drone free" and have a butterfly valve in them that opens up with exhaust pressure. However, when I went to their site, I didn't see them in their products list. They may have been discontinued.

yes the VT's are no longer available unless you find some used. heard there were too many complaints & problems with the spring loaded flapper rattling.

I have the pypes 3" X-pipe kit but I'm using the Jones Max Flow mufflers. No drone and have a great sound. You can get them on ebay for around $40 each. They're straight through and well built for the money. I have the offset/center ones with turn downs after. Part # MF1229

What made you choose the Jones mufflers? I am beginning to think any straight through muffler will have some amount of drone and that the j-pipe might be the best cure. I wish I could hear different exhausts on a big motor to make a comparison.

571 ci full exhaust. Most noise is out back, no drone in the car at all at any speed, and in front of the car all you hear is the fan blade.

Considering the system, it's fairly quiet. Very small straight through mufflers. Case is maybe 12" or 14" long at most?? They were touted as "race mufflers" at the time but I can't remember the brand. The rest of the system is 3 1/2" off the Hooker super comps and into a Dr. Gas X. Then 3" into the mufflers, and 3" Torque Tech tailpipes.

Mine (3" RacePros) were too loud for me too Doug... I ended up with Dynomax that I had ceramic coated and LOVE them! Still has that muscle car rumble at idle but not a race car rumble and definitely more "live-able" inside the car while driving!

I wonder if the new Hooker stainless mufflers are straight through like the RacePros/MagnaFlow/Corsa etc?

Just thought I would try them out. Read good things about tgem. A lot quieter than I thought. They have a nice deep rumble at idle and a cool racey sound at full throttle.

The Jones MF1229 Max Flow mufflers. They're what's on my car now.

the jones straight through are the same basic design as the race pros or dynomax ultraflos, they are all straight through perforated pipe with some type of packing in the case, they will sound very similar to each other.

the quieter dynomax mentioned are the "super turbos" which are not straight through & will loose a little power vs straight through.

A little more info on the dynomax ST. The larger case (5" x 11") 3" mufflers have full diameter 3" tubes inside as opposed to the smaller case (4" x 9") 3" mufflers which neck down to 2.5" tubes inside. Only the side/side ST flow the best. Center/side configuration causes the exh gas to flow around the center tube on the inside at the end, between the roof/floor and tube, as opposed to the side/side with the U flow directors as pictured (no tube in the way). If you go 3", get the longest case 3" that will fit, as the 3" muffler and 3" exh pipes are a good bit louder than an equivalent 2.5" muffler and pipe system.

I've got RacePros on one car and Borla ProXS on another. Both 14" case 3" I/O straight through designs. They do not sound very similar to each other.

are the 2 cars the same engine & exhaust system? probably not, even identical mufflers will sound different on 2 different cars...

but it was a general comment to the design of the mufflers, i have the race pros & have heard the ultraflo's on another similar engine build car & they sound very similar but of course not exactly alike.

I have the RacePros on one car (Cutlass) with first a 320rwhp 455 Olds, and now with a 400rwhp 6.0 LS. They sound pretty much the same with either motor.

thats fine, everyone has their own opinion & perception on things like this. but most guys will agree when it comes to mufflers, the engine combo & rest of the exhaust system make a huge difference in the sound of the muffler. a 320 hp olds vs a 400 LS would likely sound quite a bit different, different headers, cam, compression, bore/stroke etc between the 2 engines.

also i recall you recently saying how much you hate the race pros, even described them as "raspy" or glass pack sounding.... i have never heard them described that way nor do mine or any others ive heard sound anything remotely close to glass packs. must be a case of the engine/exhaust system differences & personal preference.

& the borlas probably have some internal differences in the packing etc, they are almost 2x the price of race pros... & the engine/car difference is a big factor here, your firebird with borlas has a low compression stock iron head 285hp 455 vs a 400hp LS on the race pros... of course they will not sound anywhere near the same & comparing the 2 is apples to watermelons. but im glad you like them & im sure they are a good muffler.

Barely a $2 difference.

Flowmasters SOUND like Flowmasters, whether on a stock 302 or a wild big block. The cadence of the exhaust will change of course, but the overall "sound" will still be quite similar. I had Flowmasters on the Cutlass when it still had the 455 Olds, and it sounded VERY much like the 455 Pontiac in my T/A clone when it had the Flowmasters (before installing the new exhaust/Borlas).

I had the large case Georlichs on my low-11 469" '67 Firebird, and another set on my 427" SBF wagon - there was a different lope to the exhaust, but the overall sound while cruising or at WOT was pretty much the same.

sorry i saw a $100+ price on borlas vs about $60 for RP's, didnt look at or compare polished. but the borlas & others may have slight differences in internal design to change the sound a bit, i still feel the straight throughs are similar sounding on a similar engine/car in my experience.

my reply was to you saying your borlas dont sound similar to race pros, yet the borlas are on a totally different engine/car than the RP's, so it wasnt a fair or equal comparison.

as long as you like them on your car is all that matters for you. some, including myself like the race pros & ultraflos, but on a different car they might not like one or the other. all comes down to the application they are used on & personal preference.
