3” exhaust for trans am
 

Anybody have a 3” exhaust with tailpipes and splitters on a 2nd gen trans am if so what kit ? And pics please

I've got 3 inch exhaust from my headers to a set of Doug's cutouts and to the X pipe. Everything from the X back is 2.5 inch. It clearly isn't a kit.

If you have any kind of performance setup, 3 inch is the way to go.

Number 1 , you do not need 3" Exh back passed the mufflers unless your exceeding 650hp and number 2 , you will give yourself a hell of a hard time to fit 3" tail pipes back there and not having any rattles taking place at times!

Steve I beg to differ. My 2nd gen Torque Tech 3" fit great and no rattles. Unfortunately he retired a year or so ago and no longer makes F or A body pipes.

got a full 3" kit on my 72 from pypes, everything fit great including the 3" tails... & zero "rattles."

Never have heard a complaint from anyone using a Ram Air Restoration system. It ain't cheap, but you get what you pay for, usually.

Complete Torque system on my '70 TA including Dr. Gas 3.5-inch in / 3.0-inch out X-pipe and 3-inch tail pipes. DynoMax 3-inch mufflers.

No issues.

I'd say anything over 550hp will lose power with 2.5 inch exhaust..my car picked up a tenth and a half and 1.5 mph dropping the 2.5 tailpipes.

I believe the OP makes enough power ...

If I didn't just need 3 inch tailpipes I'd order another kit from PYPES.

I disagree. There is plenty of dyno testing out there that shows 3 inch is better than 2.5 for pretty much any power level with these levels of displacement. There is plenty of room for it as well.

Anyone have a pic of the 3” Pypes system installed with the splitters on a T/A ?? I heard the you can’t run the splitters with there setup ...

Since I have a 9", I doubt I will get 3" tailpipes on it. If I'm wrong, someone please educate me.

I had the Torque Technologies 3" tail pipes with my 9" and all fit well.

That's good news, but the bad news is they're not made anymore!

I should have a new set of 3 inch tailpipes next week. I informed the shop I'm dealing with there is a big market for these.

I talked to your guy and said I would wait and see how yours fit before I buy a set , are you planing on running the factory splitters ? Somebody said the 3” splitters are made anymore... I have a set that I think got from Pypes years ago but there on a set of 2.5 tailpipes I will have to try and save them ...

I have a set of 2.5 splitters I may put them on the end...I'm not sure..my car isn't as stockish looking as yours so I'm not that concerned if I use them or not..if I do use them I will open them up a bit more.

A good muffler man should be able to make it fit nicely :-) Too bad there are not that many truly good ones out there. No rattles on mine.

Even though it is overkill, I still documented a nice power gain with full 3" on my very mild 455.

Not sure. We tried a system from someone else and it was a major job installing the it, nothing fit. Torque Technologies was great! Pypes used to be good but have taken a turn for the worse.

I have their 3 inch pipes from the Ram Air Manifolds into an X pipe and then currently dumping behind the rear wheels. Ran out of time to have the tail pipes out the back car but should that done in the next few months.

I have a Pypes 3" system on my wife's 71 T/A. Fit very well with Doug's headers. I added flex segments to reduce vibration.. Also used V-band clamps instead of collector reducers. If you could find 3 inch splitters I'm sure they could be made to work with that system. I used the 3" hockey stick tips like original to the 71.

Your exhaust looks nice. I don't know if anything has changed recently but the splitters won't work with their standard tail pipes. Pypes offers an adapter kit for their 2.5" inch exhaust systems to use with their splitters. They never offered a kit for the 3" splitters... instead, they discontinued the big splitters because few people were able to make them fit.

I'll be trying the Ram Air restoration's exhaust next time around. Your system is very nice.

That is a quality job! I like the flex segments , the heat shield at the back near the tailpipe and the new OEM style hangers.

Skip, rear brakes are a combination of late second gen rear rotors, front S-10, or mid-size GM calipers, and brackets I bought off of eBay. Work great, just no parking brake. Very low budget, calipers are $17 from AutoZone, brackets we're like $30 and rotors were $28 ea.

Got you. My Camaro project 79-81 rear disc and brackets w/ just "plain" Malibu calipers. So similar.

That looks great!! Is that a 3.5” collector? What kind of v clamp setup is that? Is one side 3.5 n other is 3” roughly how long is it from the collector to where the X pipe attaches?

This is interesting reading. My 469 powered '69 convertible has run a best of 11.4 @122 mph. This was on open headers and with a 1050 dominator. A few weekends ago whilst competing in the UK street weekend i had to fit an exhaust. I have a 2.25" Borla system that is regularly on and off the car depending on what im doing with the car. I lost a second and 8 mph on the quarter. This is also with a 950 HP carb. I have been pondering the loss and was told it was the exhaust to which several people have said that it wasn't the reason. This weekend I'm doing dragstalgia on open headers so will see.

That's hillarious people telling you a tiny 2.25" exhaust isn't slowing down a car that normally runs mid 11's @ 122 without it. :pound:

Something making that kind of power for sure needs a pretty good size pipe on it if you want to run through the mufflers and not lose too much.
I typically run 3" on stuff like that, and then use electric cutouts if I want the headers open for any reason. Then you won't be taking the exhaust on and off all the time, that gets old.

You can certainly run quick with small exhaust, it's just a matter of making more power with the engine. Look how quick the fast guys are going with 2 1/2" exhaust.

What isn't realistic is running an et and mph such as the op with open headers and then expecting to do the same when slapping on a 2 1/4" exhaust system. That's just not goona happen. You're going to have to find missing hp somewhere else to make up for it, or just put an exhaust system on the car that's more deserving to start with and have an easier time with it.

Jesus!! Your car is probably tuned very well for open headers. Choking it with a 2.25" system probably made the car run horribly rich.

Just installing better mufflers can make a big change to the AFR, requiring a change to the tune.

For pretty much any 3" system to fit GOOD, it will require an installer with the skills and equipment to make adjustments.

Looks good! I have a Pypes 3” X system with tailpipes and 3” hockey stick tips on my 70 TA. It fit great. I went with 3” Hooker Aerochamber mufflers and vbands. The tailpipes got a little tight around the tanks Inc 20.5 gallon tank so they added some wrap. It sounds pretty amazing :cool:
