New To Me 66 Catalina Conv!
 

Hey Everybody,

I really didn't need any more, but this one just popped up in a side bar on FaceBook classified & it was close to home.

It was a running driving car, but the engine was out of a numbers matching GTO, so the guy had to give it back to his friend when he sold the car. That was fine with me because I have had a '66 421 sitting here for a year or so.

The floor & frame are perfect (which is harder to find in a Conv) originally a Georgia car. A few blisters down low (very minor) I will take care of them & shoot the hood as well before it comes out next spring. Bench seat column shift, so I will be on the lookout for a set of buckets & console. I might even go with newer bucket & a custom console..to be determined. Freshly rebuilt Turbo 400, rebuilt front suspension new brakes & 15 inch tires & wheels. Power steering & power brakes.

I got the headers, new cam & the dual quad setup fairly cheap from him as well.

This one might replace the 56 as my summer car to use in shows where there is an restriction on what is entered.

My wife was interested in this car, she had messaged the seller this weekend and he told her a couple of locals were coming to look at it. So now I know who got it lol.

Gary, you are right I need to get to work. If you read my ad in the Members Helping Members section, you saw that as of Thanksgiving I am done for the year! Time for some work on the toys.

So what'd it cost you?

$400.00 less than asking price + $600.00 for new headers, new cam & used dual quad manifold & carbs.

No, not at all, in fact it will probably replace my 56 Chieftan as the car I take to the shows that have a limit on age. I have had that one for 4 years now. I have others as well. The supercharged XLR-V is too new for some of the shows, my Nova that I have had since 1978 & my Jag convertible are both completely disassembled at the moment. My flipping days are long past.

I was actually shocked that someone would ask what I paid for it!

That manifold is an Edelbrock. I also have an Offenhouser low rise dual quad that came with the 421 engine when I bought it. When I figure out which will work best for me, I will sell the other.

Price isn't a secret. I've rebelled against this nonsensical ideology forever, that everyone should be all hush hush about price like it's some state secret that needs protection. It's absurd. There's no reason for it. Of course you have to right to withhold what you paid for it, but my asking isn't unreasonable and sure as hell shouldn't be shocking.

How else are people supposed to gauge what things are actually worth if everyone is going to treat price like it's some super private diary entry? Dumb.

I completely disagree! I think it is rude to ask someone what they paid for their car, especially if you do not know the person. I was raised to respect a persons privacy.
It was shocking to me because I am on numerous forums & can't remember ANYONE bluntly asking what someone paid for their car before.


No one can gauge anything about what things are actually worth by knowing what someone paid for a vehicle that you can only see a couple of pictures of on a web forum. That would be like watching Barrett-Jackson & saying... Well that one is worth that much, so mine is too!

Very neat, seldom-seen car in a killer color combo. And having a 421 'lying around' is a pretty nice problem to have, too. Glad you're going to use it as a driver/cruiser. These cars ride like a magic carpet....and with the 421, it will be a darn quick magic carpet!!

I can understand asking what someone paid if it’s like a joke and they follow up the question with, i’ll Give you $1.00 more, but agree not very TACTFUL to push the issue especially in a public forum. Or maybe if a car was on an auction block and one asks what it went for. Just my opinion. :)

Some folks share about these things, some do NOT. I do not...Similar to some folks blabb'n about their work salaries, I believe that is a not a smart thing at all.......

My parents and teachers tried, with at least some success, to teach me manners as a youngster and one rule was that you never asked someone how much they earned or how much they paid for something.

Some folks, I suppose, would consider that horribly old fashioned.

Rather than jack up your thread even further, I started a thread about this in the clubhouse. Come on over if you like.

I'm not looking to offend anyone, apparently unlike you when you talk about "dropping down to my level".. that's far more offensive than my asking what price you paid for a car. I'm looking to have a debate about something, when someone accuses me of being rude for some reason yet cannot explain why or justify their position. That's offensive to me. I don't care for being called rude when I know I'm not being rude.

I am excited to get to work on it over the holidays. Plans are to send the bumpers out for chroming & decide whether to strip it to bare metal & shoot the whole thing or just touch up the minor spots on the bottom & hood. I will also be looking for a tilt column, console & buckets. Don't know if I will stay stock or do something more modern. It will not be a numbers matching car, so I don't think I will mess it up!

Everyone has a right to privacy. To disclose any information on a public forum is entirely the prerogative of the person holding that information.

Often price can be sensitive around the time of purchase for multiple reasons but as time passes that sensitivity often wanes. Sometimes people pay what they think is a premium just to get something they desire but they might imagine that others might consider them foolish for paying that premium. Then as time passes, it does not really matter so much and if the purchase price is questioned later, the buyer may well think he has bought well and readily discloses the price.

No-one knows more than me that I have overpaid a price sometimes but I am invariably pleased with what I bought. But why tell if really its no one else's business.

Bill, touching on dual quad's. There is an interesting article on the POCI web-site. It details, in depth, how to build a dual quad setup and make it look and perform like an authentic period correct unit. It is actually written by a good guy on this Forum named John Reeder. He goes by 61-63 on the forum. It is a very informative read, if you get the chance.

Wow...I love those mid-year Pontiac B-bodies. The big cars are the only ones I like in a convertible. That's a fine looking example.

Good looking car - I've always liked the 1966 and 1965 models. Is the color Candlelight Cream? It looks a lot like the Mayfair Maize 1965 Grand Prix I used to have.

I'd say yes...in '65 they had Mayfair, '66 Candlelight Cream, '67 Montego Cream, and '68/'69 back to Mayfair Maize...almost the same colors.. My first '68 was Mayfair. Did not like it at first but now one of my favorite colors with a black interior.

The guy I got it from said it was Mayfair Maize, but I have no idea. Truth be told...I haven't even unloaded it off the trailer, just backed the whole thing inside the shop. I have one more transport starting tomorrow with the other truck & enclosed trailer that will take up to Thanksgiving. I am done for the year after that & will get into it then!

Great car Bill! I have had a few of these cars in the 65 thru 68 years and they are really nice to drive! Hopefully we will see it at the next Norwalk show! I am looking for a 71 thru 72 Lemans vert now! Smaller for me!! Fred

Finally got it off the trailer, so here are a few more pics!

I am pleasantly surprised at just how extremely clean this car is underneath & in the trunk, etc. It is well worth stripping to bare metal & "laying it out"

The interior is clean but has cheap seat covers, I will be on the lookout for a tilt column, console with floor shift & buckets. I haven't decided whether to go with factory buckets or something else yet!
