Calif on fire again
 

Looks like mother nature is trying to take our state back again.Complete town in Nor Cal burned,So cal burning now,had a friend family get evacuated last nigh at 11.Hope all stay safe!Prayers sent!Santana winds blowing like hell.Tom

As long as all the tree huggers in California lobby against the clearing of heavy brush and dead trees, this is going to keep happening. Typical of the snowflakes that whine, get their way, then complain about the repercussions. It is a crying shame about these fires, but unfortunately it is what it is.

So the ten years of drought had nothing to do with it?
Fires have been burning here long before tree huggers ever thought about saving a tree.
Its something we deal with like others do with hurricanes, tornados and floods.

California has been burning for millions of years .... just keep building more houses, it will be fine.

Valid point made, but Chief is also correct, clearing under brush by means of "controlled" burns reduces the devastation when a natural or arson fire flares up. I agree it's always going to happen, but things can be done to help make the wild fires more containable.

I have to side with Chief on this one. It's all to do with serious management of our enviroment.

I'm told that the 3 areas in the world most susceptible to bush fires (wild fires) are Greece, the South Eastern Corner of Australia and the West Coast of the US.

I live in Melbourne, in a fairly heavily wooded locality and fires are a constant summer threat. Yet, we are prevented from cutting down trees or bush more than 10 metres from our homes. We can cut down trees or bush within 4 metres of our boundary fences.

When I moved here 46 years ago, we could cut down all and any tree or bush on our land. No penalties. No restrictions.

And who brought in these restrictions & penalties?? The Greenies. Tree huggers for want of other words. And where do (apparently) most of these Greenies live???? They live in the inner suburbs in tiny houses, with hardly any surrounding land. They live in flats or apartments and worry the world about climate change, plastics, pollution from cars which DARE to drive past or into their locality. They want bike paths, everyone should be only using public transport and so on and on. The Greenies get elected to Government positions and start to influence opinion.

Controlled bush clearing is imperative in areas of high fire risk. I'm NOT talking that all vegetation is removed but fire breaks MUST be created and maintained to allow fire management persons to rapidly access and isolate fires particularly in urban or semi rural areas. As population continues to grow, we MUST maintain a balance of safety for ALL residents but also manage our environment in a responsible manner.

Its a disaster ..cant imagine , hope all can escape and be safe. Heybuck ....that is a very informative and excellent response.
Practical solutions and planning can help mitigate potential issues.
It seems the small minority groups at times change the path of fact....

Yea, i'm impressed with the notion of Controlled Burns as a means to plan a safe territory. Feel bad for the box turtles though.

Seems like an inappropriate thing to be ragging on California right now...I'd wait until people are safe first.

Must a terrifying thing to experience. I feel for those that are affected and hope for the best.

I've seen controlled burns get out of hand around here. California drought and arson make their problems worse.

I live in Montana and am not against logging. But to turn a thread wishing people safety into a political debate without even wishing well to lives at stake...WTH? the death toll will rise and the politics don't matter now. RIP to 9 and more.

Even if people dont die,they get misplaced from their homes!One of the issue is after the fires burn off all the foliage your chance of floods increase a ton.Thats whats next.Tom

My cousin just moved to paradise,from arizona,to work at a hospital. Something happened to him,when found,he was saying his father was dead. His parents are in the midwest. What are the chances of that happening? strange.

Nonsense. Having a discussion here about it has absolutely no effect whatsoever on those directly affected by it or in harm's way right now.

It's totally possible to have respect or and mourn the dead while also talking about the problem and its causes and how to solve it. Human beings and the societies we create are capable of thinking about and handling more than one problem at a time.

I'm a 4th generation native Californian - my dad's family has been farming here since the early 1900s and still are today. The modest, mostly elderly people of Paradise CA bear no resemblance to the Coastal Commies of the SF bay and LA basin. There are over 30M people in this state and while painting with a broad brush is faster, it isn't accurate.

Let this state serve as a warning - it can happen in your state too. Be vigilant and don't ever let the eco-malthusian zealots get in power.

Not everybody in CA is a liberal.. Most people in the rural areas are conservative.
