THE best french fries Ive ever had..

I was in South Dakota for work..tired, wanted something fast and easy... googled fast food..and Burger Time popped up...it was close..so off i went

NEVER have i had french fries of this caliber..OH MY GOD....I dont know the secret, but I will be back..I ate every fry before I even thought about the rest..couldn't stop..hot and crispy, buttery in the middle...and just enough salt to be perfect..i was digging in the bag, looking for strays like a mad man....just couldnt get enough..and truthfully...I am not a big FF fan..i can take them or leave them usually...but WOW

I also got a Mushroom&Swiss...a DrPepper and an apple pie...the whole meal was under 7 bux..i figured the burger would be small like a hockey puck...

WRONG...it was larger than a Whopper, and 2x as thick..and had real mushrooms....the cheese was runny and gooey, and was so good...

the apple pie was OK, but is what we call a turnover..fair to good.. i would never buy another though

wow..if you are a burger and fry guy..THIS is the spot..small..cheesy building..clean and neat..showing some age..and not a Hipster in sight...a true hidden gem...cant wait to go back...

Awesome!! What dude don't like that!!!

Sirrotica 11-14-2018 10:28 PM

Looks like they have a store about 60 miles west of me in Richmond Indiana, I'll have to try them out next time I'm over there.

Stuart 11-14-2018 10:38 PM

I've never heard of them but they have some stores here, too. May have to check them out one of these days.

60sstuff 11-14-2018 10:38 PM

I love finding stray fries in the bottom of the bag ...... yes!

Fullsize455 11-14-2018 11:56 PM

Gotta say I'm jealous.. we have stuff like In 'n Out here, but it's not really a traditional big burger, and I'm not thrilled about their fries.. it's also more expensive. Burgers are good though.

There aren't enough good old fashioned big juicy burger joints around here.

Cliff R 11-15-2018 08:42 AM

I typically don't eat fast food unless travelling and want to get back on the road quickly. For sure it's nice to get away from the typical "chain" stores and be nicely rewarded with a good product at a reasonable price. Looks like they are a small outfit at the moment and nothing too close to our area but I'll keep them in mind when I do some travelling out West.......Cliff

SR-71 11-15-2018 08:59 AM

We'll have to check them out next trip to Indy. Best fries I've had is from Thrasher's on the boardwalk in Ocean City Maryland.

TAKerry 11-15-2018 10:02 AM

SR 71 beat me to it. Thrashers on the boardwalk in OC MD started years ago using peanut oil to cook their fries. They are legendary in and around our state for their taste. All they sell is fries and just about anytime of the day there will be a very long line. Pour some vinegar on top and its a delicacy. I have done a lot of traveling around the country by motorcycle and we always try to eat at local joints. We were in Lynchburg TN, touring the JD distillery. There was a little lunch counter that had JD in a spray bottle to mist on the fries. Funny thing is the county is dry and you cant buy the booze but they were ok using it as a condiment.

SR-71 11-15-2018 10:30 AM

I think we need to start a "Must eat at places" thread so when traveling we can stop in. My wife and I love hitting up little Mom & Pop places and for her ones that have real home made pies.

77 TRASHCAN 11-15-2018 11:46 AM

There's several restaurant's in Oklahoma City and surrounding area, named Louie's. Sports bar type of eatery. Their fries are thin cut, and awesome! Not sure if this franchise is in other states...

LOL, Cliff, when do you have time to travel??? :)

694.1 11-15-2018 11:55 AM

I'll have a Dr. Pepper & a Diablo sandwich

Back when you could get a couple cheeseburgers and a glass of iced tea for a dollar and a half

GT182 11-15-2018 12:39 PM

Oh thanks Marx. Keep it all to your self out there will ya. Not fair at all! That's two things we can't get here.. a good burger and really good fries. I hope you get so much snow you can't get that to the joint until next summer. :D

Just kidding. Next time you have back there, have a burger and fries for me. ;)

Dick Boneske 11-15-2018 12:53 PM

McDonald's French fries used to be excellent--until they changed the cooking oil about 5 years ago. They're edible when hot, but as they cool, not so much!! In our area of the country, Culver's French fries are among my favorites.

GT Gerry 11-15-2018 01:03 PM

Fries at Steak and Shake and at 5 Guys are my favorites.

Chief of the 60's 11-15-2018 01:04 PM

I like 5 Guys fries. Reminds me of the ones you get at a county fair.

Fullsize455 11-15-2018 01:22 PM

Five Guys is good stuff all around. I usually get their fries with VERY light cajun seasoning.. just enough to give them a little extra flavor, without making them too spicy. And their burgers are sooo good. Definitely on the pricier side though.

Pontiacdaver 11-15-2018 01:27 PM

Darn, I was just in Richmond last Sunday. Saw the place, but my son wanted to go to Frickers, someone he knows said the wings are the best ever. The food was good, but not great. I will definitely have to try Burger Time the next time.

tigergto 11-15-2018 07:02 PM

For Burgers and Fries Five Guys is probably the best in my area.

GT182 11-15-2018 07:51 PM

Down here 5 Guys is one of the worst. According to them they can only cook their burgers well done. As most of the others do too.

Jakes Wayback Burgers is a good one here. If you want a medium cooked burger that's still juicy they're the ones. And their onion rings are great too.

Cliff R 11-16-2018 08:35 AM

A good burger should be nothing more than ground steak, and if they woln't cook it to order I'm not in.

The locals here rant and rave about Red Robin, went there last weekend and it was just so-so. Tons of bun and a piece of overcooked mediocre meat in it.

I will say that Matt the Millers is pretty decent, especially if you like a beer battered Cod sandwich, it's top shelf..........Cliff

According to some, they actually changed the recipe in 1990.

Locally, the best burgers here in South Central Texas, IMHO, are at Hopdoddy which has about 30 locations, primarily in Texas but sprinkled around the country. Whiskey Cake, with about 6 locations also mainly in Texas, is also very good. Hopdoddy is much more fast casual, Whiskey Cake is definitely more upscale. Both use thicker patties, will cook to taste but default to medium rare to medium if no preference is selected. There are several other spots that are also very very good. Little places that have been in business for decades, only one location, no web presence other than Yelp, and are local only crowds when you go in.

69gp400 11-16-2018 10:41 AM

five guys around here is excellant

But.... This thread is about fries.:confused2 :noidea:

marxjunk 11-16-2018 10:49 AM

lol..its fine..food brings people together..and its made 2 pages and hasnt been locked down..

any fast food recommendation is fine..i like to hear the stories..wait til i tell you about the fried chicken in Indiana....

tempest1964 11-16-2018 11:47 AM

Hey Mark, I live in Indianapolis. Where's the best fried chicken in Indiana?

marxjunk 11-16-2018 12:48 PM

The Chicken Inn...Shelbyville Indiana...a real hole in the wall..in an old Pizza hut..clean...run down a little..tacky as hell..but good people..real good people...

chicken just like my grandma used to make..and sweet tea...i dont think its from a dispenser like Pop..i really think they brew it and make it...its a taste of home and childhood..thats for sure..

cast iron skillet fried in lard..not oil..you'll chew your fingers trying to get to it..best midwest fried chicken I ever had ('cept for moms, of course)...crispy crust, its thin airy and crumbles and melts in your mouth..not over done or triple dipped egg bathed to hide anything..just enough to get it right...with just a touch of salt and pepper and thats it..it doesnt need anything else but a little shake of salt..and thats debatable..its "real" chicken too..not shed raised and force fed with all the crap that makes chicken big and fatty...its very lean, just like the stuff youd raise at home..good stuff...Ive driven from Lousiville, just to have chicken there..its that good..

but heres my only negative comment... for the chicken to be so good.. the sides..well..they are really bland and..well..not even soul food type stuff..and needed help...and the rolls are store bought, i get it.. but the chicken and chicken fried steak are the stars of the show...for sure..i say its 5+ out of 5....its been a while since ive been there...and i truly miss that place

man..now i want some chicken..and theres NONE in Kansas that can hold a candle to it..and Kansans..I KNOW about our famous chicken joint....it just isnt the same....

https://www.menuism.com/restaurants/...byville-296470

next time...maybe i'll tell you about the catfish in Kansas City...i know another chicken joint in Cincy too..let me see if its still alive...pretty damn good..and i mean worth the ride...

Fullsize455 11-16-2018 12:56 PM

Ok, I think this thread is becoming a FOOD ROADTRIP thread! Because damnit, I want some of that chicken too! And those awesome fries, and a big thick medium cooked steak burger... time to hit the road!

marxjunk 11-16-2018 02:25 PM

I lived in Indiana for 5 years..and have been in Kansas City area now for 10...my work teritory is/was Illinois, Indiana, Cincy area, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Kansas and now Nebraska, Iowa, and S Dakota..so for decades of travel, you try to find "Home Style" food..or you'll go nuts

To find a spot that leaves an impression is not common..motel life can be challenging..so you find things to keep you occupied..cars and food for me...so as they say..."i get around" a little..

I have a burger dump in Wichita KS too...and not the famous one...i gotta think a little..i can drive there, but for the life of me cant remember the name right now....age is kicking me in the memory bank

marxjunk 11-16-2018 02:27 PM

I have driven from St Louis to Chicago for a Chicago style dog too...and will again, if i get back over there...thank goodness Freddy's is local to KC..they really have a decent Chi-Dog...but just aint the same....

geeteeohguy 11-16-2018 07:32 PM

Two years ago I was on vacation and traveling from Watkins Glen NY heading back towards Ohio....We stayed the night in Olean, NY, and ate at The Beef & Barrel. Hands down THE best roast beef I've had in my life. And cheap, too....like $11 for a full dinner. We made sandwiches of the leftovers the next day. Went by the Cutco knife factory there (I sold Cutco in college) as well. I live in California, and have been thinking of how I can justify another trip to NY just to go and eat at The Beef & Barrel. It was that good. Cool 'food finds' are rare and are always a treat.

marxjunk 11-17-2018 09:30 PM

Heres another sleeper "burger" joint..Whichita KS..been there for ever, and I just stumbled onto it..its not a traditional burger patty..its crumbly burger..very good..good fries..some sides are bland, but most are good...its like something home made, but diff..i love them, I get there every few months for work and make sure i get one..good stuff...very strange..though...CHILI is very good..real chili..get a root beer float...thats enough to go back for, more than once...cheap and good...my favorite requirement for a burger joint...(its strange..get past the look..you'll lick your fingers clean..lol)

NuWay burgers...

marxjunk 11-17-2018 09:47 PM

Heres a surprise...from a chain store Amigo's King Classic..I love American Taco's...which in case you dont know, are hard shell..and these will blow you away..i mean WOW..reviews say its Nebraska's version of Taco Johns...BULL...Taco John wouldnt know a good taco or burrito if it slapped them in the face...

Amigos King Classic in Nebraska..ive gotten them from Omaha to North Platte...always the same taste and quality...driving across Nebraska? you gotta try......

what i love..the Skinny Taco...its phenomenal..i mean blow your freaking mind, something so good, can be so simple...other store would call it a fresco taco..call it what ya want, youll beg for them once ya get some..no sh!t

they have beef and they have chicken...both are just too good...way too good ....but I will get the beef most every time..

its not heavy or clunky really well seasoned...incredible...super light, thin crispy taco shell....doesnt have that weird "manufactured over processed" taste...fresh as you can get...get the home made salsa..be brave, they come in little plastic containers... 1 taco gets 1 container...it just has to be that way...they are mild and hot, and i get hot..because its mild really...but it makes the thing...i cant even imagine having one with out the other...

ive tried stuff there, the skinny taco and the fried pickles are the only thing i get...the rest is kinda "Taco Bell" with Sonic type burgers....and theres enough already...the grilled steak burrito is incredible, but expensive..i dunno

they try to do everything...i mean everything..burgers tacos donuts juice coffe etc..and its just too much..but those Skinny tacos are the stuff..i promise

what?! French fries and cheeseburgers! ahhh down my alley.

I worked at wendys in high school in the late 70's when they were still very good. wow I must have ate a triple cheeseburger with xtra cheese every day I worked! a fresh triplecheese with grilled onions. oh my.

5 guys burgers in Wichita ks is my favorite right now. that is, next to my homemade on the pellet grill ones! red robin would be next. crinkle cut fries my favorite there.

but cheeseburgers period. yum. i'm a nut, would rather have a cheeseburger than a steak!

carcrazy 11-17-2018 10:07 PM

5 guys is pretty damn good but "Al's" fries at the NC State fair are the best!!

marxjunk 11-17-2018 10:11 PM

i do like red robins...none of my buddies will go there with me, they complain its too expensive and the rug rats irritate them..i dont care...i still like them..and the louder the kids the louder i get...

ive screamed in red robin...and i will again..lol..i aint scared to embarrass or be embarrassed...

Chief of the 60's 11-17-2018 10:32 PM

Red Robin is/was expensive, but now a days an $8.00 burger is not uncommon. Hell, I had a $7.50 burger at Hardee's once.

marxjunk 11-17-2018 10:35 PM

Hardees can be expensive...and its pretty mediocre any more...

the only thing i really seek out there is biscuits and gravy..its comfort food..

Verdoro 68 11-18-2018 12:52 PM

I don't get the appeal of Five Guys - at least the ones by us. The burgers are smushed together haphazardly, the cheese is never melted, and the produce is always room temperature and wilted. Fries are ok I guess, but hit or miss. In-N-Out fries are my favorite, but you have to ask for them well done (or light well or extra-well) otherwise they'll be too soft. There are a ton of secret menu variants you can order.

https://www.foodbeast.com/news/in-n-out-fries-guide/

Shake Shack makes a pretty decent burger with a nice crust on it. Not a fan of their freezer section crinkle cut fries though.

U47 11-21-2018 02:01 PM

First off, McDonalds and In & Out do NOT sell French fries--They sell shoe string fries, and shoe string fries are cooked differently than French fries. Second In & Out has terrible cooking oil which makes the fries taste like cardboard.

Second; Steak fries are NOT Steak fries at all. They are called CHIPS. How many times have you been served Fish and Chips and got shoe string fries instead?

Third; French Fries are 1/4" X 1/4" and they and CHIPS ( 1/4" X 1" ) are cooked differently than shoe string fries. The secret to making real French Fries is twofold. It must be the proper oil, and there must be TWO, NOT one fryer. The first fryer's oil is very very hot and the fry or the chip goes in for just about 5 seconds and this puts a crust on the potato. That crust will not allow oil from the cooking 2nd fryer to penetrate the potato ( it just cooks it from the out side ). First test; When the fries are done they should stand straight up like a hard on and not like someone who needs Viagra. Now the second test; When the standing fry is broken in half the inside is nice and fluffy and not mushy.

FYI; the French Fry was invented by the French speaking people of Belgium and they are the ones who perfected them with the TWO Fryer system.

If your favorite restaurant is not using two fryers they are not making real French fries.

wovenweb 11-21-2018 02:13 PM

Freedom Fries it is, lol!

Fries served at the AllStar Diner in Sylvan Springs Alabama. A local meat and three that also serves a great burger or BBQ. The fries are dumped out of a bag (yes) and cooked fresh with each order.

I understand that All Star Diner in Sylvan Springs Alabama doesn't sell French fries.

400 4spd. 06-23-2024 09:27 PM

Wednesday was the last day for fries. You just missed it.

U47 06-23-2024 10:19 PM

They never did make French Fries.

w72 06-24-2024 01:09 AM

Could they have been Belgian fries all along?

The important matter at hand is this: If the French-speaking Belgians who "invented" French Fries (do I really need to capilaize the F?) were making sure every Fry was exactly 1/4" x 1/4", that would mean they were using English rulers. Just imagine! I bet they were secretly protestants who fled the country, and thus weren't French at all. Furthermore, they likely made them out of desperation when their new neighbors learned about their indescretions and stopped sharing the good waffles with them. Those same Belgian patriots immediately invented waffle fries just to spite the renegade piggies, and we all know the waffle fry is the highest form of the art.

Short version, your whole theory is whack.

That said, I'm glad those traitors to the Crown and the Papacy were so well-provisioned with extra fryers and plenty of oil. If all you can get is potatoes, you have to get out your smuggled ruler and try your best.

U47 06-24-2024 11:14 AM

It's not my story, it's the facts. You cook them in tallow, no one does that here anymore. You cook them twice, no one does that here. And they have a cutter that cuts them 1/2" X 1/2"

GTOnly70 06-24-2024 02:16 PM

The Cliff Clavin of French Fries has spoken!

Although they cook them in refined peanut oil, but if you didn't realize it, 'Five Guy's' does a multi-step cook;
they blanch ("cook" in water);
then they pre-cook;
then are cooked to order.
