Cragar SS 15" wheels on your car? or other 15" aftermarket wheel? pics please!
 

I'm really burnt out on ralley II wheels. restored mine but not gonna run em I decided.

anyone out there with a 70-73 and cragar ss on it? post pictures please. and other aftermarket 15" wheels to. maybe i'll see something even different that's just as awesome.

in my era the hottest wheel on the planet for years was the chrome cragar SS. think i'm going to use those I always wanted a set back then could never afford em. used to see a 72 trans am white/blue with em back then. coolest Pontiac on planet earth to me.

I wish there was a 15" cast honeycomb available i'd jump on those but I don't like the tall modern size available and don't like the super heavy original endura ones.

I had them on my 71 before I painted it. They were 15x8 and 15x10 reverse offset.

I like the way they look on that later model silver car. I would use the same stock size all 4 like that. same tire size all 4 also. lug specific yep.

I see cragar makes a polished aluminum ss that looks like a nice alternative as well.

I notice the stance on these. had a 1981 trans am brand new when I was 18 years old. these cars did not sit down right at the top of the tires like you see so many do claiming stock stance. I like em higher like stock new height. guess because that's how I remember they were. the lowered thing is just to low.

Take the time to look on Summit's website at a wheel called: Trans Am Race Engineering Superlite Wheels. This is what I plan on running come spring time. Multiple options for height, width, back space, etc. Great looking wheel that resembles late 60's SCCA racing from the Penske era.

I will be putting these on HOsprit. Has 14" rally now. Going 15x7 front with *maybe* 15x8 in back.

I have been running the Unilugs on my 63 Lemans for 22 years with no issue.FWIW,Tom

Uni-Lugs are fine as long as you use a torque wrench and check them often. They are just a PITA to deal with and should never be used when drag racing.

the vintage pics are awesome. the cragar site has a visual simulator that actually works good. punched in 72 formula with cragars. realistic looking and with period tires even.

rocket has some nice cragar ss-ish looking wheels also. polished salt flats pretty cool also.

but everytime I go back to the cragar ss, just so cool.

wonder what the custom machined folks get to do a 15" aluminum honeycomb? anyone out there done that? the foose show always does a one off wheel must cost a fortune.

I like the wheels, but they don't look nearly as good as on something with much more chrome. Earlier models are better than later models but still, they just appear added and not part of the vehicle.

I see the mud flaps...…...I actually put some on my 80 ta that I bought new but tired of the look so took em off. if you drive your car a lot, as I do....and will, the firebird will nick up the lower areas quick as any ta owner knows.

so...….I did this on my 67 firebird, and will on my 72, bought the expensive clear urethane sheet and cut to fit and applied to the areas that take the paint off. can see the line some if your looking for it but its great stuff. I plan to put it on the fender flares as well, those really take a beating also.


its the same stuff weathertech sells for covering the plastic lens on vehicles headlights. put it on my Silverado truck. thick/strong/and removable. easy application.

Fat spoke look rocks. Like painted spokes personally. I may repaint a shade darker charcoal on mine.

I have a set of original 15 x 8 Motor Wheel Spyders I'll be putting on my T/A the next time I get it road ready... just need to decide what tires to put on them. Leaning towards the Firestone Wide Oval radials.

Those Appliances are probably 40 years old. Chrome does not last forever. Yes, Appliances were cheaper than Cragars but Appliance wheels were all steel while Cragar was steel hoop with cast aluminum center.

I'm a fan of Weld Racing ProStar wheels.

I built a 62 Catalina for Grand Touring and the street. I used 71 "B" Body tall spindles ( for negative roll steering) and disc brakes. The 71 cars all used 15" wheels. When I got my Cragar SS wheels for it I discovered two things. 1. I had to clearance the wheels and calipers for the wheels to go on without hitting a stock caliper. 2.They wouldn't allow Cragars on the race track because I was told they come apart at high lateral g loads.

Grand touring= Road racing got it. Drag racing no lateral load. Besides I didn't make the track rules

Street scene in the northeast in the 60's was heavy, heavy on Cragars on hot cars. Factory rims so regarded now were ditched. Junk. Cragars made it cool. 5 slots were a distant second. I think I wouldn't pick Cragars now because I have seen them so many times. Kind of like Hot Rod Red.

For vintage mojo I also like the Spyders. Somewhere I used to have a vintage pic of a Lucerne TA running them. I would run them in a heartbeat.

Also am weird in that I like aged aluminum patina...……….. rims are a personal thing and I think people shuld not be afraid to run them on otherwise restored cars. Keep the stockers handy, no big deal....

Looks like I'm late to the party. But, I thought I'd add a couple pics anyway. The first is a '70 Formula that Dad had shortly after he and Mom got married. It has Keystones on the front and slots on the back(I don't know what size they are). The other is a '76 Formula that Dad bought totaled when it was basically new and he rebuilt it as a Trans Am. It's got the old Rocket mags on it.

Bought these locally online for my 68. Not sure what brand they are but they looked good!
