curious what folks do for a livin, answering "whatever it takes" doesn't count. if your retired what did you do?

hope the rich guys with multiple high end and rare cars pipe up. I wanna feel jealous.

I am an aircraft production flight and final assembly line employee, as an inspector. 40 years with Beechcraft now Textron aviation. worked for the same company since I was 18.

Worked as an Electronic Tech, then an Engineering Tech for a company that made metal detectors. Currently disabled/not working.

Currently retired, I was a mechanic from 16 YO until I was 51, I then got trained to secure a Class A CDL so I drove semi until I was injured, disabled, and went on SSDI at 59.

I engineer (wood framed) roof systems & roof trusses... as well as some floor trusses.

Forced to retire 8 years ago from Leukemia diagnosis, I was a Private School and Daycare Supervisor/ Teacher for before and after School programs in our public Schools. I did that for 16 years, before that I made gauges for in the dashes of cars and trucks.

My hubby Mike also a member here, is a Supervisor/Forman for an industrial Contractor, they do demolition, do the padwork for cell towers, and concrete work, they run sewer laterials, and repair and pipe works under ground that fail in the streets. He runs any type of equipment on a job site, he welds, he reads blueprints, you name it he does it. He’s been there since 1984. His Father was a local builder and he acquired the same skills. We just finished completely renovated our home.



We also restore our own classic cars and antique tractors.:D

Parts man my whole freakin' life.

I'm 54 and have worked in a parts store for 52 years in some capacity. Dad was a parts man also. A couple years I also worked in a Street Rod shop.

40 years as an insulation and waterproofing contractor for new residential and commercial buildings. VP now having started at the bottom in '78. Turned 65 in December - plan is to gear down to 4 days, then 3, then ?? not sure yet - see how it goes. Will stay active long as health and/or interest allows. Timeline is tied to how quickly my replacement (nephew) progresses.

Union Operating Engineer. 31 yrs

Retired for 4 yrs now. Purchasing/inventory control/financial analyst mostly in the oil field service sector.

Retired now but 21 years performing high end home and commercial inspections and 25 years previous to that as a Union electrician.

High voltage electrical engineer.

28 years in the electrical supplies wholesaling business. Have been from the warehouse as an order filler to managing branches in a few different cities. My one piece of advice to my daughter has been to settle down and build a life. I moved/transferred 8 times in my career, almost was forced into a move I absolutely did not want to make at one point. That would have made 9. I'm done moving. If I ever do again it'll be for retirement and That will be my last unless I go into a nursing home.

15 years on a tugboat & oil barge the last 11 years in a petroleum storage facility.

Retired since 2005. Had my own small business selling, servicing & programming electronic cash register & pos systems.

37 years as an Auto Tech. Toyota and GM, what was i thinking back then??? 7 more years to go.

Im an aircraft mechanic by trade. I did overseas work on the Predator program for years. Now I work as an engineering tech for US Navy electo-optics systems.

Microwave Design Engineer for Spacecraft Payloads, formally for 33 years, informally for 37 years. LEO, MEO GEO, Deep Space, etc. Still at it but focused on LEO ( Low Earth Orbit ).
Our tech industries have changed from Accomplishment-focus to butts-in-seats focus, and that grinds my gears.

23 years tomorrow (53rd birthday )working on Vacuum Heat Treat furnaces.
(heats up to 2400 Deg F. well past 30'' of mercury.)

Been some kind of a mechanic all my life just got lucky and found something much better than cars or heavy equipment to work on.

Still miss putting derailed trains back on the track! But this pays better and since 09 I have owned my business, and love it most days!

Mechanical engineer for engineering contractors for 34 years. Been at current company for 26 and just got promoted to a Chief Engineer. Lots of work designing test rigs for aircraft engines. I'm the "weird projects" guy that takes on the design projects that intimidate others..

Chief I only see them when they're new. That being said, I am aware it was a problem on the 99-07's to varying degrees. I've seen a few, usually affecting the 4x4 system.

Just turned 58. Been a mechanic my whole career. Auto tech until 1995, then forklifts. Now primarily work on Kalmar products ie Ottawa shunt trucks,heavy forklift and container handlers

Night shift supervisor for a plastic injection facility that makes bottle caps for Pepsi, Gatorade, Nestle etc.

I've been a mechanical design engineer for 37 years.

I started out with IBM designing automatic teller machines, check sorters, dot matrix and laser printers, and lastly computers for retail based on personal computers. I spent 17 years there.

After IBM, I worked for Ericsson designing base station enclosures to house radio equipment for cell phone towers. I was part of the big digital nationwide rollout from 1998 to 2003. Business slowed after the big rollout was complete, so my facility was closed and the work consoidated at other Ericsson facilities.

After Ericsson, I spent two years working for a design consulting firm. We offered contract design services mainly to the DSL and cable equipment providers.

After that, I went to work for Eaton Electrical designing UPSs and large three-phase power distribution equipment. We supply the power equipment to things like hospitals, server farms, air ports, etc. I've never worked on the manufacturing side of the business, but with Eaton I provide a lot more support to the factory floor than I did in previous jobs.

Staying in design has been good for me. I've been laid off three times and I don't think I've been without work for more than six months total. I'm shooting for retirement in early 2020. I've done my time.
