First Look at the SpeedMaster Pontiac Heads. I’m impressed with the casting quality, heli-coils where they need to be, machine work looks good. Oil return looks well thought out. Dare I say it, the casting quality looks (at least on the surface) to be as good, if not better than my KRE's.

The heck with flow numbers, lets see how well the seats are installed as lately this has been a mess on a lot of heads, to the tune of being able to get a .020" feeler gauge in between the seat and the bottom of its Bore!
Such is a snapped off valve in the waiting once enough run time gets on the heads and the seat gets yanked all the way in! Don't get me wrong I don't mean that's the quality level of these heads , I just want to see how 50 or so pairs of them turn out! |

I have seen where the seats do not get set all the way down against the head. This can happen for a few reasons. 1. While installing seats, seat lubricant can get under the seat and prevent it from seating. I get the seat started and blow the lube out from under the seat before I drive it the rest of the way in. 2. More importantly, driving the seats in with a hammer other than a dead blow hammer will cause the seat to bounce up a few thousandths when it hits the bottom of the seat pocket. We tested this extensively. I put seats in aluminum heads with a minimum of .008" press-fit[.002" more than industry standard]. When I tested driving the seats in with a standard steel hammer, I could not get the seat to sit flush no matter how hard I hit it. Then using a dead blow hammer, 1 wack and seats were seated. From now on, I only use a dead blow hammer to seat the seats. 3. If the chamfer on the seat insert is not radiused[I use a Scotchbrite wheel to radius and smooth the chamfer] it can scrape aluminum off the side of the seat pocket and roll it down under the seat. In this case, you will never get it seated. This scenario usually ends up with a large gap like the .020" you mention. The seat bouncing up off the bottom of the seat pocket usually ends up with only about .003"-.005" gap. |

Those are pretty interesting! The price is great if they prove to be a worthy competitor to the Edelbrocks and KREs.

The problems I have with these heads is that the edelbrock bare heads are only $130 more.
The assembled speedmaster heads for 440 mopar and 455 oldsmobile are close to 40% cheaper then the pontiac heads. Why? |

Thank you for the visual evaluation of the new heads. Also for the complete list of specs and flow numbers. Several additional items that would be of interest would be: Could you please put one of these heads on a scale and get a bare casting weight of the head. Of course seats and guides would be installed, no problem there. It would be interesting to compare between these, E-heads and KRE. As we all know, sealing an aluminum head to an iron block with 10 head bolts is a challenge. Flimsy, lightweight heads make this an even more difficult task. Great cooling system layout helps, but there is no replacement for actual material in the head. Second, do you plan to cut one head up to inspect water jackets, thickness of the casting around the head bolt columns, meat in the bowl area, around the short turn, around the spark plug if you intend to make the chamber larger? Seems like all this would be necessary to fully evaluate. I realize you just got your hands on them and the initial look seems positive, but it seems like allot more destructive testing as well as dyno testing at a minimum would be needed to draw any real conclusions. I wish you the best in your efforts. Any chance you could 3D print a pair of these heads in IRON? (Which is what we really all need whether people want to admit it or not)

60539 would be the correct comparison for the bare heads. 60589, are the older style chamber that doesn’t need cnc’d but just polished. But they actually cost more now than the Cnc heart shape chamber. The cnc e’s are 60539 at 72 cc. Which are 870.50 through summit.

I wasn’t trying to poop on anyone’s efforts I just feel like with such an important part it needs a lot of scrutiny before everyone just starts clapping their hands and jumping up and down. I will have almost 10 grand in my engine and I would hate to lose it over 300 bucks

Over the years how many sets of 670's, 16's 48's etc., have been butchered up, blown up, cracked from overheating or freezing, piston kissed, valve sank, well you get the idea!
They ain't making these ever again! If you have a nice set, you might consider putting them away and running these modern replacements. It's time to start saving those original heads for restoration projects. My dragster has 62's on it that are pretty close to maxed out for d-ports at around 260 CFM. These out of the box as cast street heads flow 289/202 CFM at .600 lift and weigh a bunch less (I'll be weighing them later today). Let's help keep the past alive as we move into the future. |
