Just Need To Vent

A coworker is in the process of acquiring a barnfind '67 GTO hardtop. 2nd owner since 1968. Red with black interior. Automatic car/dual gate. Rally II's . No A/C. Almost zero rust, mice have got in the interior. Small dent in nose panel. More details to follow. Guy thinks he'll get it for less than $10,000. UGHHHHHH!!!!!! Why don't I ever get that lucky. I feel like I want to explode. Coworker is a 'Vette guy to add injury to insult.

You may wind up with it yet in that case...Vette guys sometimes frown on other makes.

I'm like you. The only thing I ever find in barns is dried cow manure, Carmine.

It's just a car. Look at it this way, you've saved $10,000 by not buying it yourself.

He’s probably blowing smoke to get you worked up, some people like to do that. If it needs an interior and who knows what else until you’d or this co worker gets into it. $10,000 is about all it’s worth with what you’ve described. If he gets it and you get to look it over and he can prove what he paid and it was $10,000 and you feel $10 was a good deal for what it may still need, offer him a grand more. :cool:

No, I love chrome covers if the car had them originally. My 75 TA had painted ones. My 69 has chrome ones as part of the 400 package. Just want to make sure chrome covers were correct on my 78. I found out they were so they will be staying on BURT. :D here is BIGDADDYs power house. Hard to find the valve covers but they are there, and a PITA to clean with all the hoses or wires across them. :rolleyes: I take a long stick with a damp rag wrapped around it to get to the back ends of them.

Sometimes you find the diamond, sometimes you lose the diamond....

I’ve been in both cases. I’ve been lucky enough to pick up the barn find (storage find, inheritance find, etc) and sometimes it works out great and sometimes it doesn’t.

I picked up a relatively rust free 66 GTO for 6500, but ended up putting quarters on it, painting it, new bumpers/chrome/stainless, planning on freshening up the heads and adding vintage air. All in I will probably be around 17-20k. It will be a fun, very nice car but not the value it was expected to be.

As bought:

Currently:

The better deal was my 68 LeMans convertible. Bought for 5k with no keys and four flat tires. New gas tank, carb, soaked the cylinders and changed the oil about 4-5 times. New wheels and tires, wet sand and buff and the car drives great, looks great and was a hell of a value.

Would bet you get an opportunity on the GTO- as was said corvette guys don’t seem to have much time for other makes/models. Give him a chance to make some money on it- maybe offerto help inspect it??

Carmine, you own one, you know the 85% I am referring to.

Here's a hint:

Polo shirt (tucked in of course)
Sunglasses hanging by a string around the neck
Titleist hat
Must have date code and correct time stamped replacement parts
Always think they are the fastest on the road but rarely go over 40mph
Always think they are smarter than anyone around them except their own
Always think the world revolves around them
And last but not least, a liberal snowflake that cannot find their way out of a cardboard box

:cool:

Firedup6975 05-21-2019 04:14 PM

Ok....Ok Carmine those GTO’s are nice but....... I wanna see that 77 or 78 TA peeking out in the garage. :D

There really aren't many things he approves of so, needless to say, he is easily riled.

I found my one owner Firebird 400 literally in a barn, was there for thirty years. Thought it was once in a lifetime till today. Found a 77 Camaro LT one owner with the original tires still on it. I know it’s not a highly desirable one but my grandson has wanted just this year for awhile now. Means as much or more to me than the Firebird because it’s his dream!

They are still out there. Not quite as prevalent as they once were but still out there.

Carmine 05-21-2019 06:36 PM

My C6 Corvette convertible, I bought brand new in 2006 from Kerbeck in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Prior to that, I had absolutely no desire to own one. What tipped the scales for me, was going with my friend to pick up his museum delivery Corvette in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I helped drive the car back to NY. I was very impressed with it. Rode nicely. Handled well. Brakes were outstanding. Had 400 horsepower. Twenty five miles to the gallon. Rated at 186 mph. Fully loaded. Just a nice car. I had recently retired so it was a gift from me to me. Very expensive but it was once in a lift time. No regrets at all. I have absolutely no desire to buy another one. Mine only has 16,000 miles on it. Always garaged and well kept. I don't drive it as much as I should. Hopefully, this year will be different. As life winds down, I'm going to keep this car to the very end or until my wife or myself can't get in and out of it any longer.
BTW, I know those 85% of Corvette owners mentioned in another thread. They are as described. Other then Corvette ownership, I have nothing in common with them and try to avoid them. I don't share their attitude or approach. Also, if you've never been to a GM car plant, try and go. I got the group tour and then the VIP tour because of the museum delivery in Bowling Green.. Totally impressed with the way cars are built. Remarkable watching the assembly line. I could have easily spent a few days there. Fascinating. I know what I've owned and collected over the years might indicate something different, but my first love has always been Pontiacs. Namely the GTO, Carmine.

Chief of the 60's 05-21-2019 07:10 PM

I race at Beech Bend in Bowling Green and did the plant and sink hole. The hardest working person in that "air condotioned" plant was a woman in her mid 50's chucking (moving) frame rails by hand, one at a time. The most useless worker was some punk in his 20's checking his ESPN sports scores on GM's dime and computer. Most overpaid were the "people" that put the wheel assemblies on. It took 2 people @ $28.00p/hr each (plus OT) to put 1 wheel assembly on. At the end of the line, not one but 2 cars did not run and had to be pushed off into repair. All this while the tune, "If I only had a brain" from the Wizard of Oz was playing through the plant.

Most interesting.... The construction on the ZO6 and watching them hand build a Cadillac XLR. Very cool.

TAKerry 05-22-2019 07:45 AM

Back to the OP, no need to be bitter, some guys get lucky and fall into these things. I had a neighbor that restored cars as a hobby/full time. He was more of a flipper. Mostly a Pontiac guy he would often come home with a gem in the rough. Mostly GTO's, lemans, and first gen 'birds. He would find them in crazy places but then again i guess he was looking.
Pretty harsh words about 'vette guys, but I know what youre talking about. Most I have run across come off as arrogant. Ones I have seen at shows care only about their own car and no one elses. I liken them to boat people (I know I will get a whole new issue started with that comment). I live in a water oriented area and the weekend navy guys take the cake as far as being …………!
I do know a couple of vette owners that are great people though. I guess you need to get through their shell.

carbking 05-22-2019 09:07 AM

With more than 50 years working with carbureted vehicles (45 owning my own company), I would suggest that the Corvette owners, on average, are nowhere near the bottom end of the scale for arrogance! But difficult to pigeon-hole classes of people. Each is an individual.

But, as others in this thread have stated, the OP should offer assistance and congratulations to his friend. Many car people are one-make fanatics. His friend may not have the parts or inclination to bring the barn find back to life. In such a case, the OP, if civil, might have first refusal rights.

Someone once stated that one will catch more flies with honey, than with flypaper.

Jon.

66sprint6 05-22-2019 12:31 PM

A friend of mine who owns a Chevelle has a friend that I know, who just bought a brand new one. He’s one of those boorish jerks with no sense of class. He was over at my buddies place showing off the car and I showed up with my 2012 911 Targa4S. Right away he starts telling me about how his Vette will blow the doors off of my car. I said “it’s not just about speed, it’s the overall driving and owning experience”
My buddy lives on a busy street. So when a nice looking lady came walking by, we asked her which car she liked better. “The Porsche of course”, she stated. “That other thing looks like some kind of old man greaseball car”. I almost felt bad for the guy, but that was priceless. I don’t mind them myself but I’d never trade my Porsche for one.

Chief of the 60's 05-22-2019 12:44 PM

I had a mint '76 911 Targa. Neat little car but not my cup of tea. You should have pointed out to that pompous ass what his Vette is worth 10 or more years down the road versus a 10 or more year old Porsche. No comparison.

unruhjonny 05-22-2019 01:56 PM

@ LStathas;

I agree with what was mentioned earlier - you saved yourself a $10k buy-in, and who knows how much extra to get it up to snuff...

About the "Corvette owners";
Sure there is a high percentage of Corvette owners that fit the stereotype lined out in prior posts, but simply white-washing them as Corvette owner is is misnomer;
The douche-baggery takes on all different forms, but boils down to elitism;
There's Dodge, Chevrolet, Ford, and (gasp) Pontiac elitists.
Unfortunately Corvettes are easy to pigeon hole here because Corvettes are generally expensive... and I need not explain what often happens when people start to see themselves as being in a different class because of financial where with all.

I appreciate the people on this forum because regardless of financial well being, most everyone here seems to be generally positive an helpful.

unfortunately I have noticed this in my casual search for parts to make my car as correct as financially feasible.

Good point. Damn why didn't I think of that. I kind of overreached for that car, but never regretted it. And damn straight it still has a lot of true equity.

66sprint6 05-22-2019 02:56 PM

Also wanted to mention that I'll never again regret losing out on a project car. In fact, I don't know that I will ever buy another project car. We've poured so much money into out Tempest and it's been fun, but looking at current more realistic prices for finished cars kind of breaks my heart.

unruhjonny 05-22-2019 03:01 PM

/\ I get that.

A "deal" stops being a deal when it's something that requires equity, and is something that from the offset wasn't a car you planned on keeping long term.

1965gp 05-22-2019 03:31 PM

That’s a great point- it’s only a deal if you truly want the car. If I found a barn fresh duster 340 I would probably pass on it or get it running and sell it.

unruhjonny 05-22-2019 03:39 PM

I have on occasion found cars for a friend;
The first time I got nothing;
The second time I got a "finders fee";
The third time I went half in...

Granted the third time was 1.5 cars, and I got a little under half of the stuff... but even though things didn't end up how I had hoped, I didn't have the garage space so in the end I couldn't be too mad because I found the car, and made the deal with him...

The first one is still parked;
The second one was quickly flipped;
The third one, netted me a good engine and some good parts - although I came up short considering what I had into the deal, I got my money's worth out of the deal... his part of the deal is somewhere in BC iirc.

A deal for one person might not be a deal for another person.
