Stripe kit

Hey guys I bought a stripe kit on Ebay years ago and didn't even realize at the time that they made the kits with black instead of dark blue. I just put them away and never gave it a second thought. Well went to replace the stripes and the judge decals on my 69, took them out of the tube and realized they are the black not dark blue. My car did come factory with the red/yellow/blue. Not sure if I should just put them on?? or order the correct ones. What do you guys think?

gtohurstjudge 06-20-2019 02:03 PM

I'd sell the kit you have and order the blue decals.

Get the correct ones. Whats the build date and plant?

pontiac plant and probably late April build based on the May 5th billing date, would that be black stripe by that time?

notime 07-09-2019 07:50 AM

Im still trying to figure out whether the blue was early or late. Havent seen enough build sheets to determine. From what ive found is that you can only determine what color they were from the build sheet that was in the car. I have mine from my Framingham 02D and it has blue right on it.

I always heard that they were blue initially then black later but I don't recall seeing any documentation on that. Another possibility is to look for the stripe residue on the inside of the doors, fenders and door jams. I've seen them even on cars that have had many paintjobs. I was able to document the factory stripe color and location on my Canadian 69 2+2 by finding little bits of the stripes on the inside front edge of my doors and backs of the fenders.

I can promise you it was only the early built cars that have the blue decals.
If you need me to post my original build sheet from the top of the gas tank I will.
Shows that they used dark blue judge decals and stripes on a February 3rd week build. No Judge emblem on glovebox door either.

I have understood that the switch to black happened AROUND the second
week of February.

UPC-WU2 07-24-2019 10:09 PM

My 04B Arlington CR Judge had yellow/red/black stripes.
Blue stripes were early cars.

No way. I've had too many early cars and when I say early I mean feb_march cars and the all had blue. My current one is a 02B car and the buildsheet says blue and it has the original stripes on it.

I am repeating what Jon Wacholtz told me years ago. I guess we have more info now, but the changes probably took place at different times at different factories. Change overs for parts are not normally in stone.

Always a lot of definitions concerning what is an "early 69 Judge" .

But the stripe color seems to have changed in early-to-mid March , and likely plant variations within that. But seems most definite anything April or later would/should have been Black stripes, not Blue.

Week 2B ending - was the running cut for the semi-loose term of "mandatory pattern built" cars. Patterns could still be ordered by the 000xx zone code for a short while beyond that. But orders could openly be a la carte' accessories - starting 2C.
Still had to be Carousel cars, though.

My 2C Baltimore non-pattern Carousel was Blue Stripe , with no Judge glovebox nor GTO dash emblem.

The stripe color change is close in hand with timeframe of colors other than carousel being available. Not saying exactly defacto hand-in-hand , but a close proximity.
Maybe ... could be a connection on those . {?}

Best i can offer

No doubts about statement made.
But definitely could use another 69 Judge buildsheet sample, please.
Very short in supply compared to 70 & 71 examples.
Please if you can . :beerchug:

Ok. I will have to take a pic of it. Even thou my car is an early car I do not believe it's a pattern car. It's a 02C build but it's a Ram 3,,M21 4spd with 433 gears.
No pwr steering or brakes but has pwr windows, console 8track player and indash tach and gauges. And also has No glovebox emblem or the Gto dash emblem. Looks like crap with neither.
Jmho.

Baron Von Zeppelin 07-26-2019 12:09 AM

Agree on the plain dash/plain glovebox being a bummer.
Most Feb build dates got a bum deal on the dash.

I'm planning to use a glove emblem , ... and use Black Stripes

Your Judge really looks great.
Pretty wild option selections on that one.

hawkins69 07-26-2019 01:34 AM

A friend of mine has a mid march Judge that still has traces of original blue stripes in jamb. Built in fremont. Has glovebox emblem but no GTO dash emblem. Original unrestored car that his mother bought new

Yeah it is . Pretty cool story. Lady walked in to pontiac dealer in 69 and said I want a muscle car. Ended up buying the Judge. Had to call her brother to help her get it home, as she didn't know how to drive 4 speed. Had it and enjoyed it for years. Pretty much parked it in the late 80s in storage with around 85000 miles. Fast forward to 2006, she gave it to her son after high school graduation. Met the family soon after at GTO club meeting and have been friends since. I took car home in fall of 06 t and spent few weeks going through car mechanically so they could start driving it. I'll never forget taking him for a ride in it and he holds on and says" what's that noise?" I responded " that's the growl from the quadrajet at wide open throttle!" The guy had no idea what that car was really about lol. Pretty cool and I remember teaching him to DRIVE it . Would scratch 4th even being a little tired and worn. Great times.

Gotch man!! Had an early Judge, no glove box emblem and the strips were original and black!! Fast forward to a 6A Judge and the original strips were blue. So that guarantee of yours just flew out the window. Besides GM still called these strips blue, red, yellow. The black strips are really a very dark blue if looked at in bright sunlight. The part numbers were the same and even Bob McKenzie when he was selling these NOS kits years ago was surprised. Opened one box, blue stripes, opened another box, black strips. Part numbers were all the same. He had to hand check the strips to get both sides to match.

glad this came up again.. my 03D Fremont judge has worn and faded stripes that I would have sworn were original and blue. But, they've been polished so much there's not much color to go by and sometimes they look black too.
.
This morning I put it under the sun and used a mirror to add some sunshine to the shaded part of the quarter panel. Blue over black on the front passenger door. I know there's been some body work and paint blending so now I'm not surprised. Still am not sure of the color of the single layer stripes because they're so worn but the driver side qtr stripe I would say is black. Is 03D in the blue or black category for Fremont cars?
