The “Best Western” ever made, IMO
 

“Once Upon a Time in the West” Released in late 1968 from the Spaghetti Western guru Sergio Leone. 166 minutes long and worth it.

I watched it again last night. Probably seen this Great movie 10 times or more since 68.
I never get tired of it.

Awesome cast, Harmonica (Charles Bronson), Frank (Henry Fonda), Cheyenne (Jason Robards) and last but not least Jill McBain (Claudia Cardinale)=WOW!

The music (Ennio Morricone) is Awesome!

One of the most famous lines ...... “you brought Two Too Many”.

I love that movie! Almost as good in my opinion is Firecreek.

I’m partial to Eastwood but that one has so many heavies it is hard to top. Haven’t seen it in years; thanks for putting it on my radar.

IMO

How can there be only one? The American Western starting with the "Great Train Robbery" from the silent era all the way up to the 21st century. Hundreds of great films and great actors. Stewart, Wayne, Eastwood, Murphy, Bronson, Marvin, Albert Sidney Crenshaw, Fonda and many, many others.
I love True Grit and saw it at the Laurelton Drive-in in 1969. It is my favorite.

I did watch this movie the other day , what shocked me was the murder of children, that said , it is one of the best western movies I've seen

“Unforgiven” has to be on the list of great westerns.

Once Upon a Time in the West was ok, but I can live without ever seeing it again. I agree with Boogy, The Wild Bunch was about as good a western as you can ask for.

I watched Pale Rider last night for the 3rd time or so. I’d have to go with The Outlaw Josey Wales as the best. A Fistful of Dollars ain’t bad, either.

I grew up at the tail end of the western craze, Gunsmoke and Bonanza were regulars on our black and white tv set. One of my favorite shows as a kid was the rifelman. But, I dont think I have watched a western since Carter was president. I always liked 'The Cowboys' with John Wayne.

The Long Riders about the James Gang is one of my favorites. I thought it was cool that they had real brothers play brothers in the movie. The knife fight scene in the bar with the Bowie knives was pretty gritty.

I'm partial to High Planes Drifter "Who are you!?!?!?", Jeremiah Johnson "same place you are Jeremiah, hell in the end" and both of the John Wayne / Rooster Cogburn "fill your hand, you son of a bitch!" movies.

My favorite westerners have already been listed The Sons of Katie Elder and Pale Rider.

From this thread, I was inspired to start Once Upon A Time last night. I have seen parts of it over the years I guess flipping thru the box, but never the whole thing. I am halfway thru it and will watch rest tonight. Sergio was brilliant in many ways. I've seen his Clint ones, but this must have been his masterpiece. The fly scene alone is genius cinematography and directing. Who would even think to try a scene like that today. It would have computer magic added for sure to even achieve that, and you would know it. I will say the music is wild operatic almost, but pretty cool. The sound effects throughout are clever. The ying and yang, slow to fast, calm to chaos, normal to insane, the shifts are never ending. Great effin movie, even just halfway. Edit to add that any aspiring actor should watch this movie. Some of the best non verbal stuff ever.

Has no one seen the start of the gun fight in Open Range?

Really difficult to pick just one, but my all-time favorite would be "McClintock".

Just chock-full of stars: Wayne, Wayne, Wayne, O'Hara, Wills, DeCarlo, Powers, etc., etc., etc.

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara made several movies, all of them good. My all time favorite of theirs is "The Quiet Man", but not a western.

Would put OJW as the best Western made in the '70's.
First saw Outlaw Josey Wales at theater early July of '76, prob a week after it came out. When first watched OJW, I didnt catch all the skilled writing/nuances/symbolism of the movie. Was easy to identify with Eastwood's character, as I was in a state of despair & bewilderment as had just lost two individuals that were very close to me. One my only Grandpa, suffered a massive heart attack. I was at the farm. gave CPR & mouth to mouth immediately, but he died in my arms. The other a few days later, a really good friend of ten years, only a few months older than me, absolutely stunningly beautiful 16 year old young lady. A horrific car crash took her along with her best friend. That time sucked, but in the end made me much mentally stronger.

My wife & I share Tombstone as out favorite from later years.
We can both quote nearly all the memorable lines, Val Kilmer at his best!

Lets not overlook "Blazing Saddles".

That scene is my go-to when demonstrating my surround sound system!

My dad always liked the War Wagon and watched it every time it was on. One day I sat down to watch it and it is a great movie. Lets not forget about Shane. The more recent westerns I like are Hostiles, Woman Walks Ahead and I consider Dances with Wolves a western but some dont. I do agree Open Range is a very good movie as well.

"The Good,The Bad, And the Ugly" was one of the greatest films ever made western or other.

My favorite would be Who Shot Liberty Valance. Any movie with Lee Marvin in it goes to the top of my list. No one played a better bad guy than Lee, IMHO.

Agreed. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Vera Miles, Lee Marvin, Andy Devine, doesn't get any better.

Another vote for Tombstone with Russel, Kilmer and Elliott
then ALL of Eastwood's westerns
and the Deadwood series from about 10 years ago
the Quick and the Dead with Sharon Stone and Gene Hackman was great too

Maybe it was the over-use of Shakespeare influence they used in most of the characters language.
They said it was realistic influence of the day and time.
But it was quacky overall and detracted from the flow.

I only saw it on DVD , and luckily watched the Bonus stuff first.
It told about the realism of the Shakespeare type grammar that was influential, and how hokey most of the lesser educated and unpolished individuals seemed who tried to grab onto it.
They did it for authentic realism ....

It was overboard and should have been left out completely.

Really liked the characters and events.
It kept me glued all the way.

Just saw the "made 10 years later" movie release a couple weeks ago on DVD.
It was intended to bring more closure to the way the series ended abruptly.


The Hateful Eight wasn't bad for a modern day made type of semi-western.

Hard to pick a favorite. I have a 3 way tie between Shane, Ride the High Country and The Sons of Katie Elder.

If we are talking TV show instead of movie, I am picking Cheyenne or Gunsmoke (earlier ones with Chester)

Absolutely, “Open Range” is a great western for sure and that opening salvo by Kevin Costner in the gun fight is wonderfully brutal.

Tombstone with Val Kilmer “I’m your Huckleberry” is neck and neck with my first choice.

Look up Polk Audio CS1000P center channel speaker and RT2000P powered towers then imagine a pure 100w through them on that scene! I smile every time.
