Dynoed my 389, very pleased.

Nothing spectacular, but a very nice street motor that will be a lot of fun to drive. 1965 389 with 76 heads built and ported by SD Performance. Crossovers filled, threaded rocker studs, hardened seats installed average 72.5 cc on the chamber, intake flow 230 cfm. Lunati Voodoo 702 HFT cam 262/268 duration @.050 and .468 / .489 lift degreed and installed at 106 deg with 1.5 Harland Sharp rockers. Bored .030 over with Ross custom pistons, 11.8 cc dish for 9.5 compression, Scat rods, Butler Melling 60 psi oil pump. Stock Armasteel crank, turned 10/10. Stock intake lightly cleaned up inside, with a Carter AFB off of a 65 GTO. It made 399 hp, and 456 ft. lbs torque. It will be mated to a Extreme Automatics 200 4R with a 3:73 rear end. One run did show 400 hp, and another showed 460 tq, but i for some reason didn't get those sheets.

The cast number 76 he is running is a closed chamber unless Dave who did the porting opened them up?

Thanks all. Stealth is what i was going for. Chambers not opened up. Dropped compression with the dished piston. Should be a fun snappy street motor. With that cam, she's all done about 5200 and the trans is set to shift at 4900 for WOT, so it all ended up on the money. Running a 2500-2700 stall converter with lock up. She'll cruise at 70 with the A/C on quite nicely.

What would be expected HP given the engine was spinning the water pump, alternator, power steering pump, flex fan, and other as installed street loads (not to the wheels, just engine dyno). Asking to try and put into perspective the engine performance.

Makes a small difference.
Last engine I dyno'd we spun the water pump and alternator and used the water pump to cool the engine. The only real downfall to that is you can't cool the engine/spin the pump between pulls while it's shut off. It's really up to the dyno operator and what is easiest to hook up. But these reasons (and more) are why you see such a big spread between flywheel HP and chassis dyno HP at the wheels. |

Those are spectacular numbers !. Under .500 lift with a AFB and AFB intake too boot. I have a low rise AFB intake and a high rise AFB intake laying around and I figured they were worthless for making power. Not true.

Dave did the head work and helped with a lot of advice, and Paul Carter also gave a lot of advice and picked the cam for me. A local machine shop (owned by a friend of the family) did all of the machine work and most of the final assembly.

I think so too. I'll be putting a set of the Ram Air manifolds on it with 2.5 inch mandrel bent exhaust. The dyno operator did say that his dyno is a bit stingy too, so i was glad to hear that.

But it is not a true street engine by any means with that duration camshaft. I did drive it on the street about 4 years. Best it ever ran was 11.55 at 117 in the 64 GTO convertible body. Here is the cam info from Lunati. I accidentally posted the advertised duration. Duration at .050 is 219/227. Not a big cam at all, should be fine for gas mileage.
"Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cam. Great torque monster for 400-455 c.i. daily driven street performance vehicle. Excellent torque and HP production with heavier emphasis on the low to mid range. Will work in tri-power applications with 389-455 c.i. engines. Choppy idle. ;Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268 ;Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 219/227 ;Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .468/.489 ;LSA/ICL: 112/108 ;Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd ;RPM Range: 1300-5500" Just to give credit where credit is due also, I rebuilt that Carter with a kit from Carbking. Top notch kit. I should probably order a spare. |

1HP/CID with a pretty much "stock" type build is getting it done nicely in my book. It will be pump gas friendly and reliable in long term service as well. Plus nice to see some "old school" parts clearly showing the potential of the early stuff which we don't see much of on here........Cliff |

Thanks again everyone. I just did A LOT of reading mostly on here, paying attention to what's been posted here in the past, especially guys like Paul Carter, Paul K, Cliff and SD Dave to name a few. Talking to SD Dave Bisschop and Paul Carter to comfirm what i was thinking, and again Paul making the cam choice for me. I was between a Crower 60916, and the one i used that Paul steered me towards. Thanks again Paul. I love the old Carter AFB's. Simple, reliable and will get the job done. Stock size 1.96 / 1.66 valves.

Happy accident to report in the spirit of accuracy, Geoff kindly pointed out to me that my carb is actually off of a 1965 421 based off of my tag number 3898S. The guy who had sold it to me told me it was off of a 1965 GTO, and i never checked it out - i ASSumed he was right. When i ordered the carb kit, i just gave Jon the numbers. My mistake for not verifying that, but i had intended to find a 421 carb to run anyway due to my camshaft and head work, figuring that would be a good match for the improved flow. Guess i can check that one off of the list.

thanks for the details on the build. Great numbers, Im trying to figure out where the SCR vs DCR numbers fall on these "stock/mild" builds Can you share: 1. what was your piston to deck clearance? 2. Did you deck the block? 3. Which head gasket # was used? Thanks Frank T |
Piston to deck is .003 down in the hole. Block was decked - had a very slight twist to the deck. Head gasket is the Butler SPM 19375 gaskets. Butler says they crush to approx .045. Hope this helps.

Thanks for posting the results of your build...it is close to what I am looking to do in my '64. Except I'll be running a Tri-Power, '64 GTO heads and plan on a 4" stroke. I would be very happy to end up with 1 hp/cid. Based on your engine I'm now much closer to an actual recipe.

Nice numbers. My 67 Firebird has a 65 389 as well. Here is my dyno run. As far as I know all original but it may have a different cam. Not sure.

How does that cam idle? Is it close to a 068? Have fun with that hot 389, I'd like to do that someday.. Enjoy and thanks for posting.

Sounds like a nice setup Cardo. A really sweet cruiser...but I think your cam specs out to 219/227 @ .050 lift (you gave the total duration and listed it "@ 050" ", I was like "WHA?!?! =D )

I don't know about the idle vs 068, i don't know that i've heard a 068 specifically to say. The idle is slightly lopey, but nothing crazy for sure. Tom Vaught's commment pointed out to me my error in the duration number, i did post the correct numbers somewhere after that. Thanks again all for the encouragement. Really looking forward to getting this out on the street, but it'll be a while to have the time to get it all together. Hoping for mid to late summer for a first drive.
