Californian wild fires. This is bad..
 

I have been watching these fires on out TV. As we here in Australia suffered almost unprecedented bush fires (same as wildfires) last summer, it's really resonating with us Aussies.

I live in a very high fire risk zone myself so I'm really feeling for the people who have lost so much. One of my neighbours is a full time firey, he is on call to fly over there at short notice. He was there about 3 years back and he hosted some American fireys who were here last summer. Nice guys.

We've got a couple of fires to the north and south of us here, Ian, and some fairly small local fires. Seems to happen every year, mostly in the outlying districts with farmers and also in the large forests. They've got the drill down fairly well. Those unaffected take in the animals of those that are.



Our local largest park is now closed to the public and used as a staging area for all departments that have come to help; choppers and air tankers fill the skies, and smoke fills the air.



It's summer in California.

My house is less than 2 miles from the large fire in the mountains, we've all been evacuated. Everyone is on edge and worried. Fire fighting personnel say it may be another week and a half before the fire is out and people are allowed back in to find out whether their house still stands or not.

My friend in Susanville has been evacuated. Resources for fighting the fires are stretched thin with other areas of the US West burning.

Sad very sad:( be safe fellow Californians.

We're about 30 miles from one of the big fires in Napa. There's a smaller one on Mt. Diablo which is about 10 miles away, but I believe they have that one relatively under control now. The smoke is pretty thick, everything has an eerie haze. Seems to be getting worse every year. Stay safe everyone.

my buddy was evacuated..he is hopeful and has the mentality that he cant change it, and what ever happens, happens..

We are far enough away to not worry, but we are getting the smoke. Watched the news last night and they had a news crew in Napa. In the background was a burned-out 1969 Firebrd 400.

Take care down there. seems it happens quite a bit down in that area?? We have some up here as well, Interior of British Columbia Canada,
Penticton Area. Dryer climate creates a lot of dry ground cover, and all it takes is a thunder Lightning hit and Trouble starts.

The quantity and size of the fires this year are truly frightening.

We have a couple monstrous fires in Colorado but news images of CA houses lost to fires are horrific. Being evacuated must be worse than awful. We complain about bad air and haze where I live but are fortunate by comparison to anyone in the paths.

You will be in our thoughts and prayers for a safe outcome.

Fires are getting under control. Unfortunately the timeline to be allowed to go back home is "weeks" meaning closer to 3 weeks where I live. Power lines are down, water is shut off, and roads are still all blocked and it will take at least a week and a half to get that fixed.

I just got back from Mammoth Lakes in the Sierras,we had to leave a day early because of the air quality.No direct worry in the town but was uncomfortable.Tom

What concerns me about the rural/hard to reach places are the historic Redwoods. Damn shame seeing it.
Locally, a pretty big one was blazing near Tulare, Ca., and for the past few years, all along Highway 99, there are random fires that keep popping up- seems very purposeful.
My cousin works for Fresno County Fire. I mentioned the 99 fires, and she told me they suspect an arsonist/multiple arsonists are setting them :(

I'm in the central valley (Oakdale). The air quality has been horrible. The worse I have ever seen.

What town are you in?

Boulder Creek. My house is right at the fire line.

From what I've heard the redwoods are pretty much immune to forest fires ... in fact they thrive on them, often post fire is when the young redwoods finally germinate. Their bark is too thick to be harmed by the fire, and most of the time their foliage is too high to be directly exposed to flames. Bear in mind that at 2000 years old, they've been through many, many forest fires.

I hope all affected in CA are safe and well.

We finally got our sky back after a month of haze and smoke. We are 60 miles from the main source - Pine Gulch fire that is now 140000 acres that had over 800 firefighters and is now 77% contained. We were never at risk but this is still great news.

Last night we had light rain and it is continuing to drizzle so things are looking up here!

Front page of the San Diego paper. Of the over 600 fires burning in the state two of them are over 370,000 acres each.
The Redwoods need their thick bark to protect them. It takes years to build up that protective layer, so there's a great loss of young trees.

Poor 1972/73 Gran Torino...

Don't know if you guys saw this terrible event. Everyone knows how thick and strong the steel is on a four-post lift. It takes a lot of heat to make them bend. Notice the Chevy on the lift. I suppose prevention is the key here, but I don't know how much fuel was around before the fire. Anyroad a sad story.

Unreal as to the destruction those fires created. I know Ken Albers, he and I were in the Corvettes of Sonoma County back in the late 70's and through the 80's. I sold him a 350 engine for his 69 Vette. We didn't stay in touch once he moved to Solano County but would see him on occasion as the car shows. What a helpless feeling to see it all go away and no help available.

This is definitely a tragedy. Prayers for all of the families affected by the fires.

Traveling south down Highway 101 south coast of Oregon near the California state line.
Numerous fires throughout Oregon as well as California. Interstate 5 closed over the state line between Medford and Yreka. Highway 101 closed in Willits. Doesn't leave me too many options other than 299 over the Trinity Alps to Redding, then south on 5. At least we have the Airstream to hunker down in. Currently in Crescent City CA, 75 miles from the nearest fire waiting to see what happens overnight.

Pictures were taken at 3 to 4 PM. Orange glow is the sun trying to burn through the smoke. Lots of ash falling even 75 miles away.

We got the smoke up here in Canada Today, apparently from Washington fires, Not a good thing. Hopefully they get these
under control quickly. Not quite as bad as your pictures, but still pretty bad.

Not by the National Guard? I saw that they were flying all over the Sierras rescuing trapped campers.

A fire flared up in the nearby mountains, so it was snowing ash here for a couple of days. The day it was 110 degrees, everything had a red glow.

It’s what we called “every other summer” when I lived in Orange County.

Surreal skies over the Bay Area this morning, it feels darker than the pic looks. Lots of ash on the cars. Surreal.

Oregon has number Unusual fires, the other daytime was like 30 minutes after sunset dark, eerie!
We are in a weird ultra dry east wind, like a blow gun dry air, fueling them, for days here and that is killing us and making it way worse.

Brutal! It seems every part of the US has to deal with something mother nature related. Here in New England, we have our share of weather related issues.

After this is all over remember to change your air/cabin/house filters. I'm sure they will be pretty clogged up.

I bought 2 air purifiers out here to take with me!

Here's what it's like to fly through the smoke from the Bobcat fire. This was Thursday evening over Lake Los Angeles.

This same fire overran a buddies property on Saturday morning and took out his house, shop, and every car in his yard except one- the 68 ElCo I sold him a year ago... That was untouched.

Heard thru the grape vine that the Local Water Bomber Contractor up here are sending down a Newly fitted CH47 that will be able to fly at night.
Should be headed that way Wednesday. Hope it helps to put out some of the fires down there. They say it can refill in 1 minute and holds 3000 gallons.
