I see theyvlist two complete heads. What is the difference?

One if for a Hyd Flat Tapped Cam, the other a Hyd Roller.

I would be better ordering a flat tappet cam and can upgrade to roller later right? but if i order roller,I have to stay roller right?

Not exactly, you can order the hyd roller and they should be about right for a moderate Solid Flat Tappet cam.

I was looking at the bare heads as they seem to be a good price. I did a little internet searching and as usual, mixed comments, but what I would do if you buy the heads complete is to take the heads to a machine shop and let them disassemble, clean, check valves/valve seats, and spring pressures.

Not a bad deal complete, but buying them bare would allow you to build them the way you wanted and matched for your engine specs. I don't know if this may actually wind up costing you more, but you would know what you have - just my opinion.

Has anyone ever flowed these heads and do they flow comparable to out of the box, unported E-heads?

I got a set last year, they were spot on out of the box, 72cc, and flowed what was stated and what Randy Repp had posted as well.

With a very light clean up they flowed 300CFM. Castings look really good. Waiting on pistons to go on a 428 street engine so no results yet.

Does anyone know how their oil drain back holes are located?

I bought a set a few minutes ago and I bought a set a while ago.
I won't buy another set of eddy's again the speed master is a better head
All the way around. Good parts long valves, just so much better then the
Edelbrocks. I ported a set myself and got over 300 easy.
Just do it, Buy the SM heads and be glad you did.

The Pontiac heads were always alot more $ than the Olds or Chevy heads. I've been waiting for them to come down as I knew the eventually would. I ended up buying 2 sets.

I just bought a pair of bare heads for that price myself. I can build them later to fit whatever engine I put together in the future.

Can these be wide ported I know pushrod holes need to be plugged up

I ordered a set today 1140 shipped. No tax, the only benefit to living in New Hampshire.

I do not see a option to get them without pushrod holes drilled so you can wide port them without welding up and re drilling. They weigh less than E heads, that materiel has to come from somewhere. Are the decks as thick, can they be ported as far as a new E head ?
And they are made overseas, there is that to consider for some.
But they are a bargain.

The decks are the same and there is a lot more room to port better then the eddy's for what I could tell. I did a set of eddy heads a while back 10-years.
I spent over a week on them, I just did a set of SM heads and and matched
the one's I did 10-years ago where I got 305 cfm. I actually got all most 315
In just 2-day's. Every thing seams better, the matirial the valves the valve job
I was able to remove the pushrod bulge almost completely. So I think they
are a lot better.

they have fried rice in the water passages. you must put the heads in boiling water then add some soy sauce and dump out in a bowl and eat.

what's the part number for the guide plates.

Great info, keep it coming. I figured they were probably around 280-cfm as cast (like the E-heads).

i put my 1.83 shaping valve in the bowl and it just floats around. definitly a much larger port then a normal D-port. they remind me of a RAV bowl I saw once.

looks like they use 45 degree seats on the intake. the bottom cut looks radius.


additional things i had to buy, spark plugs, head bolts, pipe plug and nipple for heater core.

i was probably the first to buy.... i ordered mine at 10pm thursday night once the price changed. The site said "in-stock" it now says "build to order"

I got mine Wednesday. with what happen last year, i have a feeling they ship them out as they are available. Some folks had to wait 6+ months.

Did you get the complete or bare heads? What do you think of the quality so far?

There was/is a sale on speedmaster Olds heads, $228 each, bare.

I am no expert, but they look really nice. I got the complete heads for FT. I will end up taking them apart to go through them. There are some sharp edges on the intake ports that I want to clean up as well as elongate pushrod holes for 1.65 rockers. I read they are setup for .580 max lift. The valves are 1.8 installed height.

I also want to ensure the guides are not too tight. There is no slop in the valve which is good, but I’ve had a valve seize before and don’t want that to happen again.

I’ve only played with d-ports so having such a nice head is new to me.

Thank you for the pictures. I will definitely be having mine checked out. I also need to upgrade the valve springs.

Unless you've done got a plan.. I'd get with Randy to see what he came up with for putting a pipe plug in the core plug hole that's located in the oil drainback area. Aluminum expansion compared to that plug scares me. It being there is what let SM make such reliable/acurate/consistant castings.

A rat tail file, made for aluminum, will get them pushrod holes slotted in no time at all.

I have not gotten and email either, but when I was on Ebay (as I recall), there was a note stating that the seller would be away until December 9th. So I figure this is why some of us have not had any further updates.

I spoke with SM customer service yesterday (again), got a notification today that order had shipped.
This was for a bare set, and a couple other items.
In the conversation the rep mentioned that they were doing things a bit different this year due to the extended back order situation this time last year.
All I can suggest is call on Monday.

How often do they offer sales with prices slashed to these "Black Friday" levels?
