Figured I oughta introduce myself
3 Attachment(s)
Hello everyone!
If this is the wrong spot for introductions I apologize, new to the site. I'm new to Pontiacs and the forum, to get things rolling let me tell my Pontiac story. Last year a buddy of mine found a 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix for sale at a junkyard. Him knowing that I was a GM enthusiast he twisted my arm to go look at the car. After looking at the car and speaking with the junkyard, I found that they were going to crush the car if nobody bought it as it had been sitting for sale for a couple months. I then struck a deal with the junkyard and I became the proud owner of a 1967 Grand Prix for $900. Like most cars from 60s there's rust here and there but overall I think it's solid enough to be worth saving, with the majority of rust that I can see being in the trunk and rear window. I'm sure there's more hidden surprises but it runs and is able to move so that's a plus. Like most car guys I have a couple other projects so the GP will be on the backburner for some time, but I'm currently studying Autobody at a technical college so I might chip away at the rust issues as I become more confident in my skills. That's pretty much where I'm at for now, looking forward to getting to know the site. Thanks, Jonny Attachment 567645 Attachment 567646 Attachment 567647 |
Welcome aboard. Good looking ride!
|
Nice. Thanks for stepping up to save it. Crush it? Yeesh!
|
Welcome aboard ! We can always use another Darksider
|
Welcome. Congratulations nice car.
|
That is so cool, thank god it was saved.
|
67 GP was a one year only model and only year there was a 'vert. I had one for a long time and can answer questions. Where are you (just city is fine) ? Usually high body rust is on a car that sat near the Atlantic for a long time. How is the trunk floor.
BTW 8-lugs just bolt right on unless it has disk brakes. http://performanceresearch.us/padgett/cars/67gp.jpg Wonder what is with the cheaper Billy Mitchel's Revenge next to it. |
Very cool car. Hide away headlights are so cool. There is a lot of help here so ask anything. These folks have seen it all before. I like that your junkyard sold you the car. All the yards around me will not sell a complete car once they get their hands on it. Don't ever let the rust stop you. Sites like Metalmeet readily can show you how to shape patch panels and weld them in. Like anything in this world, try it and you will learn. Second patch will be better. The third even better. People can do amazing things if they try. Good luck and send as many pictures to us as you can. And thanks for saving that old Grand Prix. She will be Grand again.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I have done some patch welding in my Autobody class but I still need some practice, sounds like a trip to the junkyard to get a junk fender to work on. I'll have to look through the pictures I've taken of the car so that you guys can get a better idea of the cars condition but the damage is definitely not insurmountable.
Padgett, I'm located in Renton, WA. I'll get pictures of the trunk and other rust areas for you to look at. Thanks guys! |
Welcome, and congratulations on the car. It really doesn't look all that bad in the photos.
|
Brother in law had a 1965 421 Catalina. Always liked his car.
So what engine is in your car? AND WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Tom V. |
Once you get all that tree sap crap cleaned off, it’s going to look nice!
|
welcome to the site. nice score. i used to sell the front header, hide a ways and bumper for twice that much.

Dredging a bit but didn't 67 have both open chamber and closed chamber 670 heads on 400s ?
|
Another I like it! A really cool car.
|
061 head is open chamber. 670 and 143 closed. 670 is GTO head.
|
'67 is my favorite of the long wheelbase GPs.
You'll get good practice at shooting color with those big panels. What's the paint code on the body tag? |
Welcome, and that car epitomizes 60's stylistic cool.

Welcome to the forums. You can get any car related questions answered here.

Nice score!!!!
|
I wouldn't be surprised if that was a one or two owner car. Still has original style hubcaps. Probably hasn't changed hands in many years..

Here are some more pictures of the Grand Prix! You can see how the trunk is rusted but not too bad, and the floors of the car look to be in excellent condition looking from underneath. Also the interior looks to be complete as well, I haven't noticed any missing trim or other parts although the part that joins the console to the dash has an aftermarket radio installed. It looks like it has been cut which is unfortunate but on the whole it's not too bad. I also removed some of the primer that was on the car to get a look at the original paint and it is a darker turquoise, I don't think its a 2 tone car. There's also a picture of the body tag so I anybody wants to help decode it that would be amazing.

Pictures continued:
I hit the limit of pictures in my last post so here are pictures of the trunk, the floors, the block #, and what looks to be filler stuffed into a hold on the drivers side roof rail/A pillar. Attachment 567728 Attachment 567729 Attachment 567730 Attachment 567731 Attachment 567732 |
Here is also a clip shortly after I got the car to fire up. It runs better now but I think there was still some bad gas in the carburetor which is why it sounds a little rough. I have an AFB 4242S that's waiting to be rebuilt to replace the Holley 4 Barrel.

I am officially jealous. Man you got a good deal. 1980's kinda good deal. Its so hard to find a classic in that condition for that kind of price. You could get that car running better, go through the brakes and clean it up. Quadruple your money if you decided not to keep it. The important thing is that the car didn't get scrapped. I hope you keep her and put her back on the road.
|
Welcome.
From the pictures.....that’s a car that’s crying to be mostly left alone cosmetically. “Big Block” Pontiac power with a manual trans and ice cold air. |
You scored...congrats!

350 horse 400. should have the 670 heads. Nicec score.
|
Per the trim tag, exterior color was Tahoe Turquoise, with Turquoise interior. Beautiful combo, and definitely a "60s look".
You really scored with that car. Congrats! |
67 400 should have Rochester quadrejet on it shouldn't it?

Nice find.

Awesome find.
My Father had a black 68 that I wish he had held onto. New here myself but welcome nonetheless. JT |
New here also but have had a lot of Pontiacs.
67 GTO 400 had a Quadrajet on 4bbl cars. I remember Milt saying he was under orders that the 67 WOULD BE faster than a 66 tripower. QJ came out on Chevvies in 65 but were notorious for leaky bowls. Sort of a vague memory but think my 67 GP 'vert did have an AFB. |
Welcome and great you saved the 67 GP. They are good looking cars. As far as the state patrol inspection goes it's just to verify the vin and it isn't stolen. That shouldn't be a problem but I heard they are backed up several months?

SHHH... IT'S JUST SETTING THERE...!!! Stolen from a junk yard, "nice", glad to see you got a killer deal, very cool car, great shape too. Just a note, compression of that engine in original form would be too high for today's fuel, though driving it around you might have already noticed any obvious detonation issues. Great Save, Welcome to the tribe ! Frank |

I haven't driven the car on the road just yet, but I know where you're coming from. I also have a 1969 Skylark with the Buick 350 4 Barrel with 10.25:1 compression and 92 gets the job done but under high load such as going uphill I've experienced some pinging/detonation especially on hot days. I'm sure there's solutions you guys have to work around the problem, perhaps thicker head gaskets or playing with the cam timing to lower the dynamic ratio? |
Great find Jonny. I wouldn't have passed it up either.. if saw it and had room for it. It looks pretty good aside from what you said. But remember.... any car sitting out side will have rust. even cars sitting in a garage will get a bit rusty over time. At least you're going to a tech school to learn repairing them. Best part tho is you might be able to use your GP in class and get repairs done faster and at less cost then the alternative body shop if you can't do it. Just ask your professor if it's possible. I'm sure they be more than open to the idea. Good luck and happy trails when you have it finished.

Not sure the kinda terrain you reside in but It's a bit heavier, elevation and hilly country will obviously also play a role. You could knock a few degrees of timing out, it kills performance but much better to detune rather than let it ping. There are also a few other things if your going to just drive it a while, today's fuel likes to eat the older rubber products. Introduce yourself in the street section to get more recommendations, post some pics too they love that stuff. :) Once again, Welcome! Frank |
Cool ride, look forward in seeing more of it. Enjoy the forum and the new ride. Cheers

Looking forward to progress on the 67
