Car Show/ Cruise night music. ( could rival a camshaft thread?)
Ok, last few years the "oldies" radio stations are playing 70's and early 80' music. Car shows seem stuck in the 50's and early 60's.... STILL.. A 75 year old guy told me today he is sick of the big bopper !!
Time to train the DJ or someone's I pod? Where do YOU think the range should be ( in years). We all " dislike something " ignore that and put your range. |
1960-1985 Don't mind earlier, or later, just not the same songs continuously, like 409, or Little GTO, Deuce Coupe, or Little Cobra.

I think each answer is going to be based on whatever years were formative for the individual car-wise and the music that reflects that.
For me, my preference is the 70s-80s, but enjoy select songs from any era. |
I would choose a mix of 50s through mid 70s. Not jut car tunes but top tens for each month maybe.

I think a decent rule of thumb would be to play music that would be coming out of the radio's of the majority of the cars at the car show or cruise-in when the car was new. That could cover allot of years of music, but at least it's a range. As easy as it is to carry a huge catalog on a memory stick now, DJ's should be able to play some deeper cuts from the era as well. There are more than the typical 50 songs that get played to death at every old car show out there.

If you look at the sound track of American Graffiti they used late 50s and early 60s music, stuff that would be played on radio rock stations at the time frame (1962). George Lucas was very instrumental in choosing the music that was played, and he grew up in southern CA. He also made the Wolfman Jack connection as it was relevant in that area during that time frame.
In the later American Graffiti sequels they moved the songs on the sound track into the mid 60s, they were pretty good on keeping the music in the same time frame as the movie was, while still playing some songs from the earlier years. If someone were to follow that same pattern and play what was actually on play lists during the represented years I would think it would be a good formula. I really enjoyed the sound track used in American Graffiti, but extending it into the 70s would also be fine with me. |

Our Weekly carclub "Cruise -In" DJs late 50s thru mid-70s, with a lean towards CCR, some Cream, Skinny Lenard, green onions, some elvis, daytona GTO, HR Lincoln, beached boys.

For me, "Classic Rock". Mostly 60's + 70's
My everyday driver - Sirius "Classic Rewind" and "Classic Vinyl" all the time |
I would think by this time 70s - 80s with some 60s mixed in.

The DJ should be able to look at the crowd and figure out what kind of music to play.

Same with 60's music. Seems like for some stations, 60's music started with the British Invasion in 64.
Personally I like 60's/80's and Big Band music from the 40's. |

Remember the Casey Kasem radio shows, where they played the weekly top 40? The pre-recorded program was issued to the stations as LP sets. I bought some for next to nothing when they were new and stashed them away. This thread got me thinking about them, and I thought it might be interesting (to some) to have a DJ play them at a car gathering.

If DJ's think out of the box, were around back then, there is a great assortment of songs that aren't on the stereotype lists, by the artists we we know.
I would mix in a bunch of Motown. And Blues, from Delta to Chicago to Memphis. Some choice country, Johnny Cash, Waylon, etc. For rock, wake em up with Mountain, Cream, Stones, ZZ Top old stuff, Clapton, Allmans, Delaney and Bonnie, Leon Russell, Beatles of course. One can keep 60s-early 70's and match the prime car era with period music. Here is an example: who remembers Chambers Brothers: "Time" there is just great old stuff that has fallen from current play, that used to get lots of airplay. Another: Temptations: 'Cloud Nine"....... on and on. |
I pretty much like everything, just wish they would turn the volume down just enough to hear the other person talk.

I like most music, 50's included but def not my fav. But I have to agree. Play something a little more up to date. For me there isnt a lot of good stuff after about 1980 so I would say anything up to that point. As far as the comment on American Graffiti, the music in the movie was relevant to the time period. If thats that case this is the 21st century, play some current music!!
As much as I like Lynyrd Skynyrd that seems to be the formula for every motorcycle rally I have ever attended. |

Its whatever i feel like listening to on the radio, but i dont go sit at shows, preferring to take trips in my cars.
Even listen to “AM jam” (AM radio) as that is all that is in the 65 C10 my grandfather bought new. Its pretty much like he left it, and we plan to leave it that way. My grandfather’s 65 with my nephew standing in front of it one day when we were cruising around |
It's because of the same limited songs on the same old playlist is the reason that I never listen to radio for music anymore.
Go to a car show that's playing 60's music , go up to the DJ and ask to to play one of the top ten on the pop charts of the U.S. , UK, Europe of May-June 1966 called "Strangers in The Night" that Frank Sinatra made famous ? You get a deer in the headlamp look! Call up your 60's radio station station and ask the same. Too much 50s music at most car shows. Can we please move up to a more relevant decade. 60s 70s are at least what most classic cars are now and the music is more timeless.

More than a few of us I would bet, really got into the muscle cars in the mid 1970's through the mid 1980s when the muscle cars Really bottomed in price as just used cars- they were Break the Mold cars, and we knew it. Many Great times were had while listening to the music that came over the radio eight track, or Custom radio cassette I hear certain songs of 70-80's music and get a feeling that is tied to the experience in the car at the time. Some 50's Songs do that- but not as often as the late 60's- early 1980's Melba toast The Sweet Emotion Judge and White Lightning... Yep Dazed and Confused soundtrack is Excellent just saw "Finding Steve McQueen" great GTO scene and decent soundtrack- Great 69 GTO driving / Cop scene- this babies got 350 HP stock and the take a free ride chase. I like anything from the 50's up to the 80's. After that I don't have much interest in it.
Don't really care what they play at a car show or cruise, I'm not really there for the music and don't pay all that much attention to it. Honestly don't really care for the door prizes or raffles either. I'm just there to enjoy the cars, hang out with like minded people. The best part of it all is the drive to and from. Can't really stand to sit still too long anyway. |

Kind of lost interest in the whole car show/organized cruise nights sort of thing…started to feel like Groundhog Day to me, and the 50’s music contributed to it. Some of these events are a lot of work as well…have to get up early to get a good parking spot, leave the car for the day, then return in the evening. No thanks! Really prefer cruising around with friends, making impromptu stops every now and then...just hanging out in an impromptu way.

I don't get up early for the regular cruise stuff. Cruising has always been and always will be (for me) a late night thing. I'll roll in around dinner time and just find a spot somewhere. I don't need to get there early for a primo spot.
Best time spent though for me is the Route 66 cruise, or the cruises around town visiting shops during the Goodguys weekend, Cottonwood has a cruise up and down main street that's kind of neat, or like you said, just getting together with a group and going for a drive through the mountains is always a good time. Shucks I wish we had more events at the dragstrip. I can never get enough of that, and racing the car is just as much fun as driving it. Any of that sure beats sitting around in a lawn chair. |

Not a fan of participating in car shows. I like to go to them and wander around to see the cool cars then leave when I've had my fill. If I never hear Elvis or "little GTO" again, that would be fine.
I like cruise-ins where it's just a bunch of people showing up at some burger joint or park in the afternoon or evening. Show up, look at and talk cars for awhile, then head on out whenever. As for the music, I'm pretty much over what constitutes "classic rock.". No master how good a song is, there are only so many times I can listen to it before I don't need to hear it again for a long time and the popular stuff that gets played on the radio and at car shows. I like bird72's suggestions, and yeah, throw in some old school country too. |

For my part being part of a local chapter (ACCK) of the sentral Norwegian Amcar Club (ACCN) struggling with recruiting new members and getting fresh blood in the club, I Cringe every time there is Honkey-tonk/beep bop 50 -60's music blaring out of som members car. It is soo rooted in an old car club with still founding members in the club:
But it does us no favours in recruiting new interest in the club,. but that is my personal opinion. |
This has been brought up before. You are never going to make everyone happy. I honestly think the closest you would get is to tune to XMs Classic Rewind channel. Even the younger crowd probably doesnt mind Bob Segar and Joan Jett. Start getting earlier and you lose people. Plus the XM channel is more prone to playing some deep cuts rather than just the same songs everyone has heard 80K times.
The one thing nearly everyone agrees on is to drop the Time Life 4 CD Doo Wop collection. While, not the only reason, that is a contributing factor to why I dont do normal car shows. Bunch of the same cars Ive always seen listening to tired music that needs to be taken out back and put down. If there isnt a swap meet, or some type of actual activity (Racing, autocross, etc) I dont go. I listen to straight up metal. So I almost always go to swap meets and put my headphones in. Nothing like finding an intake I need whilst being serenaded by Slayer and Sepultura. Hot take, but I think if you listen to country music you should have your hot rods keys taken from you. |
I vote nice peaceful silence......they always play too much 50's stuff and the volume
is always way too loud. |
