Comp 290b cam users

I'm going back to my 290b after my roller damage. I have better flowing heads now, 300 from 240 when I used it before. When degreeing this cam, where would you install it? I don't know how it was done in my old 400.

AG 07-17-2022 04:52 PM

What's the LSA?

461-69bird 07-17-2022 07:50 PM

106

25stevem 07-18-2022 06:25 AM

If have always used it straight up or 2 degrees advanced just to make up for chain stretch.
That 2 degree key is very hard to come by these days!

Half-Inch Stud 07-18-2022 08:08 AM

Surely change out them roller lifter springs to. flat tappet springs ;)

Will be most interesting to see same or improved performance!

461-69bird 07-18-2022 02:03 PM

His, yes I'm going to change springs and pushrods

RJRjr 07-19-2022 09:08 AM

That cam worked great when I used it. Installed straight up.

Yeah, it was in my car when I first broke into the 10's. 370 gear, ati 4500 converter 463" 11.5 compression e- heads. Ran best of 10.81 @124.5. Have since lowered compression and went small .420 lobe solid roller. Car was slightly faster with 290b. 10.90's now.

Do a search in this section.

There was a guy that ran in the low 10's high 9's with that cam with 310 cfm d-ports.

May have been on E85 though.

I've seen that cam in a 450ci IA1 with edelbrocks go 9.90's in a 70 gto back in 2002.
The car was gutted with a glass hood but it wasn't super light.. it was a guy named Dalton out of Chesapeake VA..
The engine was built by Jim lehart ( not a fan so don't kill the messenger) .. it ran good..

It was Jim who built my previous engine with the 290b in.

What year was that and how did it go? I ask for a specific reason...

approx 2009-2013. as i recall it lost a solid flat cam, blew a head gasket, broke a rocker stud (which i think took out the solid roller cam), and threw a rod through the pan driving down the interstate.

since having it redone at another shop it runs great.

kinda sad, i liked jim and it seemed like he did everything he could to make things right. i do not really understand what happened.

Yes that was mine.

Johnny406 07-20-2022 09:00 PM

Not intending to hijack but what is the minimum/maximum compression range of the 290b6?

25stevem 07-21-2022 06:26 AM

It depends on how many cid where dealing with also?

Jack Ferris 07-21-2022 01:13 PM

I've never used them in a 400 but I put them in at 102 in the 455's.

Jack, mine is a 472 stroker, does that make a difference?

Scott Roberts 07-21-2022 10:21 PM

It needs higher compression.. not good on a 9.5-1 motor.. install It straight up.. has a good bottom end grunt for a heavier car... jmo.

11-1 or better in my opinion..

25stevem 07-22-2022 06:14 AM

In a 455 it seems that 11.5 is a good starting number for strip usage in something 400 cid or less 12.5 should be the minimum target.

Half-Inch Stud 07-22-2022 01:15 PM

Lower signature info was street/strip use, and breached the headgasket between cYLs 2-4 after 4-years street duty. Probably low octane ping on a hot day on the highway.

It may but I don't know what it would be. IMO a 106 LSA is pretty tight for larger cid. I went with a 110 on my 482.

461-69bird 07-25-2022 05:05 PM

What car was that in Jack and was it street, strip or both?

Jack Ferris 07-25-2022 07:54 PM

One is a 64 Tempest the other a 72 LeMans. The 72 is a drag only car and the 64 saw both track and street time. Both engines built identical.
