You Don't See One of These Every Day!
 

A local customer brought this by the shop a couple of weeks ago. We've been trying to get together to "fix" the carb on it for almost a year now. I was shocked when i saw it, unmolested original every where. He didn't remember ever touching the carburetor and is the original owner.

The car had been off and taken apart decades ago however, and had some "issues". When I removed it there was an late model Olds gasket under it, it had some internal issues as well, and ALL the threads for the fuel filter housing came out with it.

It took a little longer than usual (cash and carry Friday's) for a Friday morning job. I usually have them in and out of here in a couple of hours.

The car was amazngly stock, still had the TSC hooked up and working, when most of those were amputated before the vehicle reached it's first birthday. Can't say as I've ever seen a nicer unrestored Judge in my time. It had a little over 50,000 original miles on the clock and the only thing the owner ever remmebered having done to it was replace the timing set early on when the plastic coated top gear failed...........

Wow, must have been really fun to work on an unmolested car like that. Really special. One thing that jumped out to me in the pics was the secondary air valve flap lockout still in place. Been years since I saw one of those still attached by it's roll pin. Bet it ran great when you were done with it. How much crap was in the float bowl after 52 years?

I though the same thing. I can’t remember if the RA3 were different, but the other 400 cars would have two nipples with the vacuum reservoir can under the right fender.

I've still got the original secondary lockout on mine ... is it a thing to remove them?

Notice finish on vent tube to air cleaner/RA tub. Also intake paint seems very good for 52 year old car. Possibly "refreshed" at some point? Thanks for sharing very interesting.

Might have had a few things freshened up when the cam chain was done but that's no crime. Notice it still has the original control arm splash shields, and the arms themselves look like a car that was kept inside most of its life.

I know of a 70 white judge,,,one owner,been sitting in a shed since the 80's..Its about 40 minutes from me. I had the owner do some work at my house in 2004 and he still had it. He has passed since then and his son owns it now. Ive left messages if he's ever interested in selling it but no response. This summer i talked to a guy that knows the son and i asked about the judge. He said its still sitting there in the shed.

Rare for 69-70 GTO (like where is the mercury switch) Only slightly different with mercury switch, and on the hood, for G-body.

Yes, auto trans car. I was able to do the job while he waited despite the fact that ALL the threads for the fuel filter housing came out with it! The carb had other issues from previous "tampering", which most folks call "rebuilding". The seal was off the pump and wrapped up on the return spring under it. Choke pull-off wasn't holding vacuum either. So between no accl pump and not unloading the choke of a cold start it was nearly impossible to start and difficult to drive. He'd been dealing with that at least 20 years, which probably kept the mileage down even more.........

You know what just occurred to me;
I bet that if a book was printed, with a minimum of text, but just photos of legitimate "survivor" GTO's, Firebirds, Grand Prix's and the likes...

Yep, a pictorial reference book. With enough photos you'd be able to spot most everything that was right or wrong by comparing them. Probably easy to put together too, wouldn't have to make a bunch of claims about "correct" or not ... just print the photos and let knowledgeable readers make the decision.

I'll bet he'll put some miles on it now that it's running like it should. I can't imagine trying to drive a car with a bad choke pull-off and accl pump in the carb. It would be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to start, and "blubber" till the choke opened the flap some, then hesitate every time you pushed on the gas pedal........

All I know is that my Cliff Q-Jet rebuild has impressed everyone that rides in the 67 GTO...it runs like its hairs on fire !

Shouldn’t the under hood lamp be on the hood on a RA car? Or is that just bird?

BTW really sweet car a real time capsule , would be great to see detailed pics of everything even though I’m a bird person I still like to see any original Pontiac and study things. It’s so rare to find things original and undisturbed I wish more people would post pictures .

If someone were to take photos, I think it would be better to have them posted online, like in a thread rather than a book. That way you can download the pics and then zoom in as needed to see better. Maybe that's just my poor vision as I get older...

I think the location of the lamp was determined by the platform;
A couple years back I pulled some parts off of a painfully original Oshawa built 1970 Lemans Sport (3737) which had a Pontiac (as opposed to the "Canadian"; read: Chevrolet) drivetrain.
One of the parts was the under hood lamp (as well as the door sticker, valve cover fuel requirement label and some other odds and ends).
It was already picked apart when I got there, but everything underhood was there... covered in a layer of bits of straw and mouse turds.

Call me old fashioned, I like not being teathered to a smart phone or computer via an internet connection...
I like books, I like doing stuff offline.
Books are not affected by power outages, data dead spots, or a myriad of other ISP issues.

I agree I have the same issues I’d need a big magnifying glass for a book these days lol but the zoom feature is so good on detailed pictures .

Those are good points. But once the presbyopia sets in big screens and magnification really help. So we need both! That's always the best answer, I'll take everything. LOL.
