Looking at finally getting wheels for out 69 GP street car. Which of the 3 wheels you guys think would look the best on it?

Torq Thrust.

Another vote for the Torq-Thrusts.

Torque thrusts . . . . .or dog dish with red lines.

The Champ 10-13-2022 07:38 AM

I'd go with #1... Torq Thrust's are just ho-hum to me. And the Center Line's are a pain in the ass to polish around all the rivets (learned from experience).

The Champ 10-13-2022 07:39 AM

I like the dog dish with redlines too, but that wasn't one of the options (as well as the previous mentioned Rally II's.)

slowbird 10-13-2022 07:55 AM

I'm open to other suggestions, only requirements are they need to be light and need to be available in 10" wide

Yeah, #1 for me.

My friend had a 69 GP and as I recall, it had what appeared to be deep dish Rally II's. Don't think I've seen them since but they were cool.

I know it's not one of the choices you listed but Year One Rally IIs all day long! The 17s look really good on the GPs. This 70 isn't mine - picture sourced from the web. https://www.jegs.com/i/Year-One/219/...c+rally+wheels

T Thrust

Formulajones 10-13-2022 10:43 AM

All good choices but for me personally I prefer something Day 2 in appearance that fits the era of the car. Love draglites but those didn't come along till much later. The most common Centerline wheel design that most are familiar with cam along very early in the 70's so that's a closer fit. But to be honest the torque thrust fits the theme and era much better. I generally go for the torque thrust because of that. Classic style that never gets old and looks good on anything.

The only other wheel I like that fits the era are classic Cragars. Being steel they are too heavy for what you are wanting to do, but for an alternative I've used is the polished aluminum Rocket wheels that very closely resemble an old Cragar without the weight penalty. I run a set on my Chevelle. I get people asking me all the time if they are Cragars, lol.

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Rocke...BS,237609.html

You can also get them with a grey center to tone them down a bit, but then they start looking like a torque thrust.....

Jim Moshier 10-13-2022 10:56 AM

I like my Cragar SS Next the Rally II Year One,

NO WHEEL, screams 1960's like the torque thrust!

Joe's Garage 10-13-2022 10:39 PM

I'm a fan of Cragar SSs myself.....

2nd choice would be Rally IIs in ANY configuration.
3rd choice would be Center Line Auto Drags (brushed finish, so no polishing)
4th choice polished aluminum slots

Bigs and littles if possible.

Except what was on most cars in the mid to late 60s which is the cragar SS . Not sure I like them
On a classy car like a GP and dint like the American torque thrusts that’s was an early 60s wheel

I did see a really sweet black w white interior and white half roof in CT last week w ralley II and (going by memory) red center caps that looked outstanding. Such a classy looking ride. I’m
Not a keep it all stock kinda guy I like both ways but on the GP I like the ralleys w redlines or white walls it’s just looks classy

Those Rocket's are fantastic. May have to consider those for my next wheel purchase. :)

Ironically, I would move the Torq-Thrusts down on my personal preference. I'm not a huge fan, though I know many are.

I run a set of Cragar Eliminator's on my 72 LeMans GT, but not sure they make those any longer. Well, not in 15" anyway.

I run Wheel Vintiques Rally II's on my 71 GTO, and you can get various sizes and back spacing from them. Chrome hoops if you like too (on my 71)

Both of my 67's & 74 Bonneville run Rally II's.

And let's not forget Ansen Sprint, or as they say, "slot mags." The modern version may be US Mag's or the like. If anything says 1970's to me, it's slot mags. I have a set on my 2005 GMC Canyon. They look great to me on anything from my truck, to a vintage GTO/Grand Prix or even a Bonneville. Slot Mags are hard to beat to my eye.

I guess the answer really is, "whatever you like." Everyone else will always have a diff opinion.

Scarebird 10-14-2022 01:34 AM

To me the TT's and Centerline AutoDrags do not carry the style theme that Grand Prix's should have and frankly are far too common.

The 17" R2's do and have a far superior selection of rubber.

I like the Rallye 2's, 15x7 up front and 15x10 in the rear. If you want the weight savings Convo-Pro's. Not a fan of the Torque Thrusts on later cars. As mentioned Torque Thrusts scream 1960's...... That GP body style was used from 69-77.

slowbird 10-14-2022 08:53 AM

So does anyone make Rally 2 in aluminum that's 15x10? Year one makes 17" ones

grivera 10-14-2022 09:40 AM

I don't believe so -

the thing about those GPs is the Year One 17" Rally IIs look really good on them unlike some other models where they look too big.

I'd go with the 17" but no real good street/strip tires in that size.

I think that would depend on your definition of street/strip.

This is Summit's listings winnowed down by wheel size. I would hazard to guess they carry more 14 and 15 inch stuff than say Tirerack being Summit is more race oriented. Note 17" is almost the most popular size:

Wheel Diameter

18 in. (3,232)

17 in. (3,226)

20 in. (2,335)

19 in. (2,035)

16 in. (1,970)

15 in. (1,861)

14 in. (721)

21 in. (530)

22 in. (466)

Filtered by competition tires. ie. slicks, track only:

Diameter:

15 in. (330)

17 in. (133)

18 in. (133)

20 in. (110)

19 in. (88)

16 in. (84)

13 in. (20)

21 in. (14)

14 in. (9)

22 in. (3)

and filtered for Summer only, UHP tires:

Diameter:

19 in. (572)

20 in. (551)

18 in. (439)

17 in. (185)

21 in. (171)

22 in. (86)

16 in. (37)

23 in. (11)

15 in. (9)

24 in. (6)

Note how 15" are almost nonexistent and no 14's at all - even for Honda sizes...

I'm looking for tires I can drive in on and get 1.5 60ft and drive home. That'll be hard to do on 17's I think.

Scarebird 10-14-2022 07:56 PM

no, newer muscle runs 17 and up and have no issues hooking up.

I believe you need to define the task you wish your GP to do. I cannot say the a GP would be my first choice in street/strip platforms. I believe a true street car has the reliability of a daily driver but with bit more grunt/handling chops.

60 foot times would have little to no say in the equation unless more than 10% of the miles was at a dragstrip.

It's a street car that gets driven to the track and everywhere else. I like my cars to hook hard at the track and on street which we rely heavily on the tires to do.

I first noticed a 69 GP when I was in high school. It had aluminum slots on it, and looked real sharp!!!

I once owned a set of U.S. Mag aluminum slts. Absolute best looking aluminum slot wheels made!!! They are being made again. I'm tempted to buy some for my TA. Although I already too many complete sites of wheels I like, already. For future use...

slowbird 10-15-2022 08:48 AM

So I'm confused on the backspacing of the wheels listed on the American Racing site. What is offset?? Some of the wheels they list as 3.77 backspacing with 44mm offset. Guess I'm confused.

Offset and backspacing are different ways of measuring how the center of the wheel is positioned on the hoop.

BS will change based on the width of the rim in question, so if your changing rim width's, your desired BS will change, but offset won't.

For instance, if you have a 15x7" rim with 4.25" BS (6mm offset) and want to go to 15x8's, you would need to have 4.75" BS to have the same 6mm offset to position the tire in the same place in the wheelwell.

This chart will probably help you.

Cragar SS wheels are junk!

The Carlstar Group is rinky-dink and their Cragar SS wheels are junk. They are comprised of rims (barrels) rolled, half-ass welded, and poorly formed by Cragar in Aiken, SC, shipped to California for a superficial polishing, shipped to Mexico for flash chroming, then shipped back to Aiken for assembly. The aluminum alloy centers are low-quality castings made entirely in China, then shipped to Aiken, SC, for final assembly where the rims and the centers are welded together. It is no wonder that the crappy parts of the wheel do not fit together right!
