I don’t remember them being there, musta been the second home, it’s still there, you can see it off 696 freeway.

That was a handsome building. I always thought their headquarters was in Kenosha, WI? Where did I get that idea? AMC did some wacky stuff. Never took themselves too seriously. Still remember the Pacer commercial where the guy had to put the giant sub sandwich in the Pacer through the passenger door because it was 4 inches longer than the driver's door. Funny quirky stuff like that. The Rebel Machine sort of a caricature of a muscle car. The AMX though, was no joke. I miss them too.

My SX/4 Sport was crazy. They put the floor heater vents at your shin instead of yer feet so yer feet were always freezing in the winter...

Still...the best winter beater I ever had

The Original Building was build for the Kelvinator Corporation, IN DETROIT.
AMC moved in some years later. The building is NORTH of the I-94 Freeway
and east of the Southfield freeway on Plymouth Road. Been there a couple of times.
A Engineer named Mike Royce, SCCA Tech Inspector, was located there in his earlier
Engineering career.

I had several Wagoneer's and J10's with Quadra track

They were about as Good as it got in the winter driving back then.

Someday going to fix up my Black Honcho and then there is the wife's 74 AMX Black on Black, Go Pack, with desert air. to fix up.

Jeep almost saved them, Renault really buried them instead of saving them. Chrysler got a great deal with the
nearly fully redesigned Grand Cherokee and a bunch of talented engineers.

The company I worked for had the Chrysler account, the day they took over AMC, they decided to re model the lobby of the AMC HQ, a buddy went there, they cleaned out all the cases and replace them with Chrysler stuff, my buddy went on the job, people were coming down with their stuff in boxes because they were let go, he remembers talking to people that were pissed and complaining. Lol
One thing you don’t see is nOS AMC parts , I found this seal kit working for a lady one day doing a job. Only AMC part I’ve ever seen so I kept it.

Keith, do you remember Ed Bailey AMC? Main St Royal Oak, ( look at the bottom most letter opener) I don’t remember that. Was it the Bill Grieg Buick dealer or the Fresard Pontiac before Royal took it over? I can’t find the address of the Fresard/ Royal dealership.
These were free mail stuffers, my sister used to get like .25¢ for each one mailed, these were left over. Stayed around my moms house all these years lmao

I was in that building several times when Chrysler Truck and Jeep engineering were located there. It was an absolutely great old building. There were still some Kelvinator logos built into the building. Too bad it had to be demolished.

Saw this at the beach on a recent trip to Florida.

Boy with that rear bumper removed and no vinyl roof, the car looks much better. But it would be totaled in a 2 MPH accident. AMC, all the way back to the early Rambler/Nash days had some weird looking cars. We had a bunch of AMC cars in my family growing up. My father more or less hated cars. So he naturally gravitated to the cheapest transportation available. Often it was AMC. We had a stable of Ambassador sedans and station wagons. A couple Rebels, A few Americans. Only one standout. My mother, who liked cars, insisted on a sporty model. One day she came home in a red Javelin with a white interior. 390 4-speed. My dad was not happy. I loved it.

I hated those cars, your rite, no back bumper it was pretty cool. It was an X too.
My mom had a ambassador wagon, it was a strange monstrosity
I still have a front set of turn sig lens from it. Lol
I had a 73 Gremlin, saved my ta from 3-4 winters. Those Motorola alternators on the amc’s would over charge not under when they’d go, fried the whole dash out one day on the way home from work. Radio, gas gauge all the light bulbs, gone.

My first car I purchased myself at 15 with my own money was a 1977 Jeep Cj-7 bright red lifted with 33" Bfs , Chrome "modular" wheels and more importantly a 360 AMC 3 speed stick. The thing had glass packs and about 4 ft long exhausts.

I was riding my bicycle far from my home that day when I saw the Jeep parked next to a garage in an open field.

Must had been there a long time ... looked like it. So I left a note for the owner on the jeep's windsheild that I wanted to buy it , it was love at first sight!

After the owner called me , we finally came to an agreement that Id get the thing for 3500$ which was A LOT for a 15 yo kid who mowed lawns, helping a plumbing co, and in a bakery once in a while for pocket money.

I paid in several installments and once paid , I remember going with a highschool friend of mine picking the thing with his dads F-350 dually and the flat bed he'd normally used for his heavy machinery, My friend was 16 so he had a drivers license, which I didn't !

So for almost a full year I've cleaned, fixed, polished and very fine tuned, the Jeep ...starting it every day , driving and doing burn outs in our driveway because I didnt have my license yet ...it was driving my neighbors absolutely nuts... and this thing could lay rubber at will so it did it often!

But more importantly,,, I had the year to learn everything about AMC , mostly from various old performance magazines since internet didnt existed, on how to tune and hop up AMC engines , I went from knowing nothing about AMCs to become THE AMC reference in my small town a year later lol!

I hoard cars and motorcycles, but AMC will always have a soft spot for the excentricities of the AMC engineers... I had Javelins, etc... and still own a bunch of Jeeps some are projects and a 68 AMX v8 4 speed, 75 Gremlin X V8 4 speed and 1976 Pacer...

The color combinations of the AMC cars were incredible too! (Bad) One summer my dad came to pick me up at YMCA summer camp after a 4 week stay. He was proud of his new Ambassador station wagon. 1970. It was Grape Jelly purple with a dark green vinyl interior. You just can;t make this stuff up.

360 4 barrel 727 PO dinged the right fender and replaced the AMX grille with one from a Javelin.

74 AMX grilles are getting pricey and hard to find.

If I was shopping for an AMC, this white/red '70 would be at the top of my list.

That 70 AMX is beautiful. Allot of people prefer the more "pure" styling of the 68-69 styling. I love the 70 hood and the interior upgrades.

Yea, my mother had that Javelin and one other neat car I remember growing up. She had a 63 Impala SS convertible. It was light metallic blue, white interior and top. 327 auto on floor with console. That was about it. No Pontiacs, unfortunately. My father was still effected by the depression most of his life. He was pretty frugal most of the time. AMC cars fit him pretty well. Basic transportation, low on frills, pretty much all business. That purple Ambassador wagon had cruise control. I remember him always being annoyed with that option as it never worked well. Seems I have a vague recollection of him complaining what a waste of money it was.
