If You Loved Them When You Were Younger, See Them Before They Are Gone!

Hello Everyone,
Over the last half a dozen years or so, I have made it a point to see many of the artists that I have enjoyed throughout the years. I guess this all came about many years ago when I had tickets to see Richie Havens at a small hall in the Cleveland, Ohio area & did not make it back from a transport trip in time to make the concert! He passed away less than a year later! I saw Gordon Lightfoot & Robin Trower over the last 3 years & Friday Night We celebrated my wife's birthday with a nice dinner locally & then went to see THREE DOG NIGHT @ The Casino in Northfield, Ohio!!! What a great show they put on! They played most all of their top 40 hits, threw in a few lesser known songs & even one from their 1st new album in 40 years! Very enjoyable evening as these gentlemen were in their mid 70's, but it was obvious that they loved what they did & appreciated the folks that came out to see them! Absolutely agree with you. If you love music that was popular in the 1960's 1970's and you want to hear it live by some of the original artists, you better not wait too long. Being the youngest in my family with 5 older sisters, I grew up liking allot of music from the mid 60's and such because my sisters were always listening to these tunes. When I was first starting out raising a family and grinding out a living, I couldn't afford to see many of my favorite bands. Now retired, in the last 10 years, my wife and I have seen many, many of the artists I enjoyed growing up. Even some I didn't know that well . Going to see the Zombies in a small 300 seat venue in October. Saw them last year at the same place. They are still fantastic live. Rod Argent on organ is the best. I was always a big Tom Petty fan. Sadly he passed before I ever was able to see him live. Many of the various tribute bands playing all over the country are excellent as well, you will probably be surprised. Enjoy your cars AND your music!

a word of caution to avoid possible disappointment
Many of todays groups that were spawned in yesteryear are but a hollow shell of days past. IE non of the bands original line up. These new posers if you want to call them that are very talented and sound very much like your old records but they are not.One that comes to mind is CCR.Now named Creedence Clearwater Revisited. I was watching a concert online for Foreigner . Listening it sounded very close... then I said to self,thats not Lou Gramm. I get it but dont be expecting a 50 yr old group to have all its 75yr old members |
We saw CCRevisited outdoors on a hillside; excellent.
Herb Alpert was excellent (we were probably the youngest there.) KC and the Sunshine Band wax excellent. Going to see Cheap Trick in Sept ( not my choice there ) butt hay it will be outdoors. |
I saw the Doobie Bros with Michael McDonald about a month ago in a small amphitheater. They brought out Bruce Hornsby for a couple of songs. Great show. You probably won't see them together again.

Over the last several years, we've gone to see Neil Young, Three Dog Night, Chicago, Alan Jackson, Earth, Wind and Fire (twice) and Lionel Ritchie. Coming up next month is Eric Clapton.
We really enjoy live music. In the last few weeks we saw Avery Anna (new artist), Ritchie and EWF. By the middle of October we'll add Clapton, Old Dominion and Luke Bryan. With the NHL season starting back up, that will slow down our concerts until spring as we'll be attending a minimum of one Wild game per month. |

Oh forget; wife saw Pat Benetar, then Frankie Valli a couple years ago. Said they were impressive. Some fella said "big deal, i had dinner with Franki Valli after the show"....i forget if that was a PY guy or who-where.

Had a chance to see CCRevisited in Michigan City about 14 years ago. But when I found out they were coming it was already sold out. At the time, the line-up included Elliott Easton on guitar.
In 1986, I drove over a hundred miles to see Three Dog Night, and I had to get up and go to work the next morning. It was worth it, though. When the opening act was playing their set, I didn't care for it and went back stage to wait for TDN. This was in a dinner bar with a very loud sound system. When I was back there, Jimmy Greenspoon was hanging out and talking to a couple other guys. I stood right next to him for awhile and listened in. He was the only original member besides Danny Hutton and Cory Wells on that tour. Glad to see that Michael Allsup has rejoined in recent years. Wells and Greenspoon have both passed on.:( |
Best show I have ever seen was The Who in 2002. They absolutely lived up to their reputation.

Have seen John Lee Hooker, Paul Butterfield, The Kinks, The Who, Eric Clapton, ZZ Top, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, John Fogarty,The Clash, The Cramps, Pearl Harbor and the Explosions, DEVO, AC/DC with Bon Scott, JJ Cale, Tony Joe White, Lionel Hampton, etc. Part of the advantage of living in the SF Bay Area from 1961-2003. And the James Hunter Six is coming to CA next month!
Walked out on Humble Pie in 1982 because we got impatient and the band was late. We were in our seats and just walked out. Went to an all night poker party instead. THAT was a huge mistake. Steve Marriot died about 6 months later in a fire. See 'em while you can, guys. |
Wife & I have made an effort to get out & see several of the older acts. We're fairly select in who we step up for more expensive tickets, but have been enjoying seeing both older & younger artists.
Traditional country as well as Southern Rock are my main stay. Some Classic Rock but again more selective. My wife also enjoys a wider variety of newer country artists. We made Brooks & Dunn locally in April. Ronnie Dunn has a fantastic voice, one of the best of his generation. Wife & good friend a few weeks ago were able to see Foreigner in a rain shortened show at the AMP over in Arkansas. Heard they put on a good show. With couple friends we are doing the I40 shuffle to see the Belamy Brothers Friday night. First saw the Belamy Brothers in a med sized club setting when I was 19! Lot of great memories from their early appearances. Ought to be fun! Next month headed east to see Jason Aldean over @ the AMP. Know it's not as big an outdoor venue as GlobeLife Park concert we made a few years ago, at that one Jason definitely TORE IT UP. Also saw Jason @ the BOK in Tulsa was good, but not near the sound of the system in Arlington. |

As I get older, some of the bands I really didn't like all that much in my late teens and 20's are interesting to me now. My wife and I have been going to tribute shows of some of these bands. Haven't been disappointed yet. The shows are 20-25% of the cost of the few surviving members of the original band, if they are still with us at all. They seem to all put allot of effort into their live show and every one of them has been good to excellent. Examples we have seen: Get the LED out, a David Bowie tribute band, a Tom Petty tribute band, Eagles tribute band, Brit Floyd, and half a dozen others. I think the most expensive ticket was something like $35.00. Good live music that doesn't break the bank.

Saw quite a few 70's/80's big name Rock bands & several legendary Country artists when I was in college. Also worked concert patrol several times @ the Lloyd Noble during same time/early 80s. Still remember working a Black Sabbath concert.. what a deal, not my crowd, and still not an Ozzy fan. Wasn't a Kiss fan in mid to late 70's (my preteen brother was) but they put on great show when at 18, 5 of us drove a hour & a half to see them. Several years earlier a group of us really wanted to see Lynyrd Skynyrd, but just a year later we all lost that chance :(
Skynyrd (what's left of the replacement members) along with ZZ Top played at the AMP last month, heard they put on a good show. Many shows over there @ Rogers Ark, as well as at our local array of Indian Casinos, have well known artists with reasonable priced seats nearly every weekend. |
2023 Lynyrd Skynyrd sounds darn good on youtube.
Going to see Dog the Bounty Hunter, probably up close ( :eek: ) this Sat. No music though. |

October 18th I'm going to see Queen up in Philly. Not all that crazy about it as I saw them the last time they were here. But the 1st time was free, and so is the one in October. Free ride up and back plus dinner before the show. What's in your wallet? LOL

Saw Tom Petty live in Philly a few years back. Fantastic concert and so glad I went as it was only a couple of months lated that he passed. Going to a concert in January at a vineyard in Queenstown NZ that has Collective Soul, Texas and Simple Minds - should be a good mix.

It's probably not anyone else's cup of tea on here, but last year I saw Rob Zombie, Powerman 5000, Static X, and Mudvayne on their Freaks On Parade tour at Blossom towards Cleveland. Was an amazing experience! I've also seen a pretty decent AC/DC tribute band at a local festival this summer, and I saw George Jones in concert twice when I was a kid. I envy you guys who have seen Rush, theure one of my favorites. I was supposed to go see them on their R40 tour, that ended up being their last before Neil passed, but my d!ckhead boss wouldn't give me the time off work.

Steve Winwood's music has been a background to my life for over 55 years. Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith, and on his own. We were fortunate to see him live about 10 years ago when we lived in Washington. High-impact experience for me.

I went to see ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Uncle Kracker last night at the Walnut Creek pavilion with my youngest son. We were at the very front of the lawn seating. Billy Gibbons is still rocking on, not sure how old he is. Lynyrd Skynyrd performed a tribute to all of former members that have moved on. It was an awesome show.

Saw Cheap Trick last night, an outdoor event. They were fun. Lot of popular hits! Lead singer voice is still good as original. Gotta be old fella but that voice never lost a bit. They just posted their setlist (17 titles) on Facebook. Encore was about 3-4 songs.
Guitarist still a ham and switched guitars every song, saw the guitar racks before the show; 7-8 Les Paul Sunbursts, Old Telecaster sounded Clapton like, 63 red Gibson Firebird had a real neat sound, other Allen-Collins looking guitars, the 2-legged guitar, the 5-neck guitar, etc. Definitely an underrated talented guitarist. He kept flicking picks to the croud. Funny but graceful. Bass player played a 12-string Bass all night, and did a couple decent Solos. Band would sound super-tight if he played a 4-string. Surrender, I want you to want me, Ain't that a Shame, Mommies alright sounded like "Live a Budekan" quality. Drummer was tight, opening solo to Surrender, or/and We're all alright was pretty darn good. Could feel it through the chest, Rhythm guitar guy was eh, like the 12-string Bass, he filled the air with on-notes that served to drown-out the Lead guitar subtleties. Walk-out song was original ACDC "itsa longk way to the top" if you want to rockNroll. Tasteful. |
