Cliff Ruggles
Just wanted to say, Thanks to Cliff, for being there when needed.
No, he didn’t pay me 5.00 to post this, and no it’s not a paid advertisement. I don’t usually post stuff like this, but this one is justified. Some on here will see his posts and think , “here we go again with the same old same old.” If he tells you something believe it. It’s no skin off him if you do or don’t , but trust me you’ll be better off if you do. The carb parts are top shelf and if you purchase some you can get the advice you need if you need it. Plain and simple. Hell, you might even get some extra timing advice even if you don’t think you need it… I just recently put together one of those 600hp /600 tq setups and it’s just as streetable as he tells you. Had a few questions about that and he was kind enough to explain everything I didn’t know I needed to ask. That’s pretty hard to come by these days. Thank Cliff! P.S. that converter was worth an easy twice what you charged for it. Right out of the box and into the car and never thought about it again till 2-3 days after we’d been driving the car. Wonderful piece of equipment! |
Cliff is always helpfull and I ALWAYS enjoy and learn from his post!
Have used his kits on 3 carbs all run wonderfully!!! |
I totally agree. Always helpful.
|
He’s a great help to our hobby and this site!
|
A 10 min phone call to Cliff turned my 71 Q-Jet from a bogging fall on your face to a true performance carb.
Thanks again Cliff!!!!!! |
Cliff wrote the book on Quadrajets
|
Cliff is an asset to the hobby!
|
Sun Tuned both Cliff and YOU are credits to the hobby!

Cliff helped me out a bunch of years ago on an Olds 350. So, not just poncho`s.
|
I read about everything Cliff posts! I learn a great deal from him and he rebuilt my RAIV Qjet years ago and it runs perfectly. In these days of constant bilge and BS on the internet, it's nice to be able to trust someone's judgment!!!
|
Cliff is a great guy, he has helped us out several times over the years, we have had him do a couple Distributors for us, and has provided us with Carbs Kits and Parts to get us fixed up, so that we could correctly calibrate Quadrajets in years past. In fact, he is currently helping us correct a custom Quadrajet that was purchased from a "commercial" builder that wasn't correctly setup for our combination. He has a wealth of knowledge on many fronts, which is excellent for our hobby and here on the forum
|
Cliff is the man. He always responds to my annoying email questions about engine combos. Or tuning advice. I built a couple motors with his advice and following what he has posted. They always turned out killer. Thank you Cliff wish this hobby had more people like you.
|
Legend has it that Cliff actually invented the quadrajet. He is just too modest to tell anybody
|
Three cheers for Cliff! He has helped me on and off the Forum many times. Great guy with incredible knowledge and experience. First class.
|
He’s good. :)
|
Don't forget carbking, Ol'PinionHead, Scarebird, etc. as experts in their field of interest. Post other names as they come to mind.

I have followed Cliff for a few years and have always trusted the man when it comes to The Quad and any other advise he throws out there.
Another one I have trusted is Lars Grimsrud. Oh to be a fly on the wall when those 2 get together with the proper bottle O' beverage. |
Guy is legend....keep up the great work
|
Cliff is great! I've bought many a part from him and they work GREAT1 I frequently print out some of his posts and keep them in a notebook to consult, much faster for me than electronic, never down or low battery and works great in my garage when I need to have the advice from Cliff handy. Thank you Cliff!
|
Lots of experience, especially with street-strip pump gas 455s.
Spread those lobes out ! |
The biggest thing Cliff has done for me is to remove the shroud of mystery around how the q-jet works..and by default, carbs in general.. I bought the Doug Roe book years before but I was totally confused. You have to give me pictures and that's a major part of the reason the book works so well. Been eyeballing the TH-400 book for a while.

Could not agree more with this thread - I'm fortunate enough to have several carbs that Cliff has worked/tuned.
Always fair pricing and great service. When you need advice - he's always there. He will go down in history as the greatest qjet builder/tuner in our hobby. |
Cliff, you have also helped me a bunch of times. Maybe not all directly, but you always post offering help to PY forum members.
Keep being you pal this site would be far less without you so pay no attention to the pissing matches. 👍👍 |
Cliff is definately a blessing and an asset to us here on PY, I have his Q-Jet and TH350 books in my library as well. THANKS CLIFF!!
|
He's been a lot of help over the years to me, too. One of the real good guys in the hobby.

Thanks guy for the kind words. Have been away for a few days, BURIED in parts orders which is unusual for this time of year. Things usually slow down from around Halloween till after the holidays, then I get blasted again. I also did a carb and distributor for a long time customer and want to get that shipped out on Monday.
Couldn't have done it without the help of Robert (Sun Tuned). This one needed new pins and springs, plus a new VA and reluctor. Weight holes were all wollered out but I found a used set vs having to braze them up and re-drill the holes to fit the pins (Royal PITA). Anyhow, have to run, we're having our annual Christmas party tonight. Going to smoke some chicken drumsticks and put a ham on later today. We just might have to consume a few adult beverages to keep us hydrated!........Cheers and hope everyone has a great holday season!........Cliff out.... http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702128667 |
First thing, thank you Cliff for your service to our country… & secondly thank you for your service to our Pontiac community…. You have always been a straight up ,honest ,straight to the point type a guy.( & i respect that) Happy Holidays to you & yours,Kenny

For me, Cliff is up there with other "big" Pontiac guys. Some of the big Pontiac guys when I was growing up were
HO Racing (Craig Hendrickson, Kern Osterstock, Ken Crocie), Nunzi, Pete McCarthy...and then Jim Hand...and then Cliff Ruggles and Rocky Rotella. I think one key in all these guys - they shared their knowledge. Oh crap, I likely should not have used a list as I know there is many guys I have missed. But. these guys helped me a lot in the past and still help me today. |
Just yesterday, about this time I talked to Cliff and ordered kits and a few Msc. parts for 2 Q-jets. Almost exactly 24 hours later, the parts are sitting on my porch!! Incredible fast service especially during the holiday rush, I know Cliff doesn't have any direct impact on actual shipping times and delivery, but it does mean when I hung up the phone he must have immediately put the kits together and had them in the mail in a matter of a couple hours. Just damn impressive. Not to mention he is an encyclopedia of carburetor and general automotive knowledge. Why would anyone want to buy parts like these from a parts store where there likely there isn't a single person working who even knows what a carburetor is? Kits are super nice and complete BTW. Thanks Cliff.
|
I'm glad and fortunate to have known some of them. Helped me.Growing up in Latrobe back in 60s nobody tuned and raced Pontiacs that would give you/me help.
|
Thanks for the kind words!
|
Same experience here, any parts I order - arrive very quickly and are the best you can get. With the magic drill bit, some bushings and tiny screws, every Qjet I touch doesn't have a throttle shaft leak. The accel pumps are wonderful.
|
Cliff’s willingness to share knowledge is an asset to this hobby - I’ve also learned a couple of his phrases -
“Not worth two squirts of duck poop” and “like crows picking corn out of manure” |
"Not worth two squirts of duck poop" and "like black birds picking corn out of cow chit".
Rest assured there are PLENTY of parts these days being sold and used that fall under the first statement, and even a few of my "followers" who quality for statement # 2 putting EVERYTHING I post under a microscope hoping to find a flaw in my armor. Reminds me of just a few years back where one person in particular followed me around reading every single comment I made, and Googled to the brink of extinction to find someone living or dead, didn't matter, who completely disagreed with what I posted. Those were some UGLY days on here for sure. Being retired at this point, having bad cases of CRS and even worse cases of DGS life is GOOD no matter what happens on these Forums, or anywhere else for that matter..... |
Haha - thanks for the correction!
