AI Images - Fun or Scary?
3 Attachment(s)
OK, I might be procrastinating and looking for a time-wasting diversion so I find MSFT has an "AI" image creator.
I gave it a try, asking "create an image of a Palisade Green 1970 Pontiac LeMans being attacked by Tyrannosaurs". Then I asked it to create an image of the same car being chased by police. It did better than I expected, actually...other than looking like a Pontiac Cutlass.. Let's see yours! Here's a link to the tool: MSFT Image Creator http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702074463 http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702074511 I then tried "1970 GTO crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a life raft". Pretty good if I ignore the serial killer inside: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702075298 |

This is crazy.
Here's a "1970 GTO being airlifted by helicopter over the North Pole". Yes, the car is wrong but the tool is pretty amazing. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702075902 |
Looks like a GTO/Cutlass/Chevelle/'69 Firebird hybrid.
|
Don't forget Skylark..that last one especially, around the headlights.

Apparently AI doesn't know that a 70 Lemans didn't have AWD so it can't smoke the front tires. Still pretty cool though. |
"AI" has a lot more programing to do before it ever happens with any accuracy.
Like I've said before,it's a big scam cause really new technology is DOA. It all looks so "Cartoonish" |
I'm old so I dont know about these technologies. Its amazing though. On web there was a multiple guess question about the car pictured. It was supposed to be a 70 GTO but had similar looks to yours pictured.

This is not politics, just an accessible intro to some powerful software technology. As soon as I said "AI" I knew the thread could go into the toilet so maybe this doesn't belong on PY.
I simply found the ability to create artistic images from a random collection of thoughts to be fascinating and for me, fun. Clearly this demo tool is not intended to be accurate, but more about gathering images from the web, and combining them in a creative way. And it does this FAST. To me, it's like Photoshop on steroids with a massive collection of images to start from. Yesterday, there was a thread on PY that mentioned secret squirrels in the bowl of a Quadrajet. So I input "secret squirrel in a 4-barrel carburetor" and the tool generated this image: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702138478 The tool promotes artistic interpretation and styles. Today I input "abandoned Pontiac Trans Am on the waterfront in the style of a watercolor". Here is what it created in about a minute of crunching somewhere out in the cloud. Freaking amazing: http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702138627 |
It is amazing, but at what point or maybe rather where are the youth of today going to find reality.
We all know that those cars are not accurate GTO’s, LeMans’ or Trans Am. But will they and these are just some old cars. I’m worried that soon nothing is going to be accurate on the internet or it will be really hard to know what is a true representation of something and what is not. Remember all those times someone comes up to talk about your car and starts with “My Brother/Friend/Dad had one of these and by the time he is finish you know the car could never have been exactly as he describes because there are too many things wrong with what he is saying. Well soon it will be your car is wrong because the headlight for that year are different and GTO’s have chrome front bumpers(well I guess one or two do but..) I think the tech is cool but I don’t see a positive use for it. Just fantasy and waste time at best, or create confusion and misinformation at worst. To you question at the top, I say Scary. |
Any program that is written is only as good as the people that write it .
These are probly millennials with 0 car knowledge. BTW; the most overused word in "tech" today is; AMAZING lol |

Moderators - I apologize for my poor judgment using charged terms in my title.
Please change the title to "Fun Tool for Creative Art Expression" or something less incendiary. MSFT Creator has no more to do with cars than any other image processing/design program. I just thought it was fun and impressively powerful. .................................................. ..................................... If a camshaft is alone on a desert island with no PY forum members within miles, is it still wrong for every Pontiac? http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1702150910 |
That's a "camshaft"./
Not even close. Proving my point. |

I think the AI aspect is interesting. It’s basically a computer browsing web images with what could be correct or incorrect titles anyways. It’s fun to see what it comes up with. The web in general as well as every other form of media is often inaccurate to say the least (I think back to the Counting Cars episode where that dude was buying a “ ‘68 Judge”, and he’s supposedly a car guy lol). Again, thanks for posting this. Our kid was laughing so hard when we had it cross his ‘72 Plymouth Scamp with a killer whale (no idea how the ElCamino on top was added). We also did another of his car in the correct color winning a race driven by a Smurf… lol Thanks! |
I see it as scary. Not so much for me personally but, for every aspiring artist out there. Not only will they not be able to get a job or make a living doing what they enjoy but, every image that the AI creates is copyrighted the moment its finished and if anyone uses if for anything remotely involving revenue or advertising they will be receiving an invoice. Just like Getty Images does to anyone who uses one of their 10 billion photos.
|
AI is scary. Just look at how many times they've had to pull the plug on various programs. Tay wasn't designed to be scary, but it most certainly didn't turn out like they expected it to. So unattended is bad, but what about when factions oversee it's development? Ask ChatGPT about it's connection to Peter Thiel and it will lie to you. Why?
|
AI will always be a danger.
|
I use this technology every day at work now...it's amazing and saves me so much time researching.
I can see the writing on the wall however and my job will eventually be redundant but hopefully not before I'm ready to leave...lol It is not accurate yet but it is getting better and faster all the time. |
I like the Orcamobile and Smurf..nice!

Keep in mind fellows.
Google - Social media platforms generate much of their revenue through selling targeted advertising based on algorithmically mining every second of their unwilling and unwitting users' lives. If ai is developed to a point Google search becomes a waste of time,or unnecessary, bye bye Google. They won't let that happen . BTW; That "Bonneville" looks like a Torino. lol |
To those of you who say AI is "scary", here's a question to ponder: can natural (or non-artificial) intelligence be scary as well? How many times has history seen a very bright individual bring about massive destruction?
Just food for thought. Aside from generating silly images, a well-trained artificial neural network is able to solve chemistry, math, and physics problems that have stumped humans for generations. The possibilities for advancements in science, medicine, and other fields is staggering. I think it's hasty to label the technology as evil when there has never been a shortage of people who are evil. |
New technology isn't developed without profit driving it, which means it will definitely help either companies or individuals enough that they'll willingly pay for it.
New tech like metal tools, automobiles, and light bulbs were easier to understand but were probably scary to many. Cell phones weren't so scary to most until they stopped being mobile phones and became mobile computers with GPS that enabled tracking every interaction we have with and/or through them. Unfortunately, as many here note, we already have too much going on with our devices and software that we don't see nor are even aware of. I don't think tech companies are inherently sinister and they have delivered massive benefits for all. They are, however, run by people and greed does not always support the best ethics. Trust is not easy. I don't think it's wrong to regulate AI but IMO, that's not going to happen gracefully, given the power these companies have. Something about foxes guarding hen-houses.. I just hope the benefits of AI outweigh the turds that will come with it. I'm personally excited and hopeful about it but understand the reservations. |
IMO;
The worst thing to happen to our culture in the last 100 yrs. was the development of the internet and computers. |

Without a doubt the biggest threat AI brings to the world is the undeniable fact that "a well-trained artificial neural network is able to solve chemistry, math, and physics problems that have stumped humans for generations. The possibilities for advancements in science, medicine, and other fields is staggering." Unfortunately those advancements WILL include weapons technology that presently the world is unable to obtain. So lets examine the scenario where country A is on the edge of a big AI break-through that would put them in position to develop that superior weapons technology that the rest of the world will not be capable of developing without the AI. Will countries B thru Z stand by and let country A move ahead and develop this technology? Or will one of the B thru Z countries decide that a first strike to destroy that AI capability would be in their best interests? Will they decide that a large commando style raid of the AI developer in an attempt to steal the technology would be their best option followed by a first strike if that fails. So the real fear comes from the (as you stated) EVIL humans and their desire to control the world around them at any cost. Look around the world today and ask yourself if any there are any national leaders that would use an advanced AI for personal or national gain over all other considerations. Do you trust all of them? Can your children trust all of them? |
BTW;
Computers cant think for themselves. The all run on programs written by humans. Garbage in = Garbage out. ;) AI is bs. |

Yes, the power of even this "immature" image creator tool is impressive. Easy to see how useful the tech can be and easy to see how it could be abused. We watched an NFL game yesterday and I think almost every ad was a digital creation. Tools like these have probably been used for years on stuff like ads, movies, and video games.
"A group of 6 accurately detailed white 1969 Pontiac Trans Ams in a circle around the cartoon character Wyle Coyote on an airport runway" https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702316664 |
Anyone that's ever been a coder, even on a basic level understands how over hyped the whole "AI" thing is. Maybe 1% of the population has any real insight into what AI actually is. It's old technology, it's been around for decades. The only "Intelligence" involved is the intelligence of the programmers implementing the alogrhymes that produce the results.
AI doesn't "Think" even the tiniest bit, it sorts through massive amounts of data and finds probable solutions to queries based on well crafted algorhymes. If you have ten scientists working on a problem in ten separate rooms and not communicating their findings progress is slow. If those ten scientist still don't communicate with each other, but dump their results into a database ... "AI" is the program that sorts through those results to find high probability solutions based on a consensus of data. What makes the "AI" seem super intelligent is that it is the only person in the room that has access to all the results, from all the scientist in the same place at the same time. It doesn't create anything new, doesn't "think" anything ... what it does VERY well is .... find things that humans miss because of the shear volume of data involved. What is portrayed in Science Fiction movies is NOT what AI is, what is portrayed in the movies is total fiction (currently). Maybe in 200 years real "artificial INTELLIGENCE" will exist, right now it's very solidly "ARTIFICIAL intelligence" and there is a HUGE difference between the two. Maybe one out of 1000 politicians and media figures have any real understanding of computer programming .... but of course they are ones making the decisions and hyping the technology. |
5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
|
Well it was fun while it lasted.
I find the MS image generator entertaining. It's a decent first attempt. Although ... it won't create anything with "boobs" ... don't ask me how I know. |

"countdown to extinction"
https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702327587 How intelligent is it if it can't spell "extinction"? In partial defense, it did offer this one too: https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702327888 |
You'd think people would remember that politics are not allowed in the Lobby. Please keep it that way.
|
My bad
My bad.....Wasn't paying attention. Carry on.

Did you create that pic? If so possibly it was 'your' spelling and it just made it as it was told? (like make an 'extintion clock'?) |
Weird thing about those Wile E Coyote Trans Ams, they have three headlights on one side and two on the other.

Here is the input quote "create the most accurate image of a 1968 Pontiac GTO that you can"
Here is the result ... https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...4&d=1702331428 I don't think we having anything to fear from this trainwreck any time soon :) |

As we circled the drain, I input "A vintage pontiac race car with large decals showing "AI" being towed by a team of horses into the sunset".
The tool spit out some interesting images, although it kind of missed the point about what was being towed... https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702331131 https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702331239 https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1702331149 |

Yep, this AI is growing on me :)
Kind of fun to find all the errors ... like a Where's Waldo https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...0&d=1702407877 |
Can you have it use a pic of your own car to do the images?
(so it could be more accurate?) |

update: Looked around and found at least one that will do it ... but of course you have to pay. |
dataway: you were asking for it and AI gave it to you in spades. Future - not many A bodies so the survivivors are kinda melted together - evidently with lots of 1970-72 Cutlass quarters and some kind of weird shiat with the roof and hood.
And our descendants will have PHS+ to show this was the way the factory did it. |
Let's see some with the hoods up. I want to know f they include the ''correct" 400-4 Buick stickers.
Seriously, I'm actually curious as to what AI will make of the engine compartment. |
I think this particular tool is being VERY cautious about accuracy to avoid copyright issues.
In other words, I don't expect MSFT Image Creator will ever provide an accurate rendition of anything. It appears the distortion is intentional. As others have noted, ownership of digital images is a big deal and an automated image generator isn't going to risk uploading anyone's copyrighted image. Nor is it going to allow the tool to hurt anyone. For example, it won't allow you to create a negative image targeting a specific product or company. Ask me how I know... It also won't generate violent images, which is great, but also a little silly considering the amount of graphic violence that has been sold for decades on game systems. I asked it to generate an image of a GTO dropping onto a WalMart and it said I was violating policy (presumably violence, but maybe also about targeting a specific business??) The "underlying" tool that MSFT sells and is promoting with this freebie "Image Creator" is "Microsoft Designer". I haven't messed with it. Nor will I, as I am not a digital artist. If I was, I'm sure there are lots of powerful tools out there that would allow creation of highly detailed and accurate images. Image Creator says it is based on, or uses, something called DALL-E. Perhaps DALL-E is software that would allow creation of an image around an uploaded photo or could be taught what images are OK to use for automated image generation ??? I dunno.... Net for me: Image Creator is a fun tool to generate creative images FAST without doing any work at all and a demonstration of how well software can interpret speech to create art. |
