Is Pontiac coming back?
|
DISCLAIMER: Do you need to be told that this advertisement is fake and not to be taken seriously? Our lawyers think you do.
|
So why would GM invest in an ad?
|
Wouldn't be the first time Car & Driver pulled the wool over someones eyes.
|
Given GMs current state of affairs, I'd bet GM is going to fail, (again) long before they have a chance to ressurect Pontiac.
I just saw where Barra said, GM will soon become a leading software company.............. General Software, that has a nice ring to it...........LOL |

we can just read the Car & Driver article instead? Ah, Diego is generating clicks. Again. Just skip the charades and tell us you wrote an article next time. https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...1&d=1714072923 |

GM already has a small-block V8 with 600+ horses paired with an electric motor. Only time will tell whether there is something here. |

Your presume the ad was paid for by GM. The disclaimer presumes it was not, but rather wishful thinking by someone at the magazine. GM isn't smart enough to put out Pontiacs again. They are too busy crippling what is left of their car manufacturing.

Let's face it, EV's are the sh*t these days and it's just depressing. :gag: |

Fact is, you're trying to direct traffic to your article. That in and of itself is fine. But calling me 'tarded because I pointed out how you aren't forthright about your journalism? Priceless. :pound: |
GM already has a performance division, it's called Cadillac. With the exception of the Corvette, what else is there?
|
And gets 17-20 MPG

April 1st was quite awhile ago. FWIW, I take the disclaimer as being coy, the first of several serial ads. Quote:
Since the magazine issue just came out, I'm interested in learning what dots can be connected by others in the ensuing weeks . . . or the source of the joke. |
Pontiac naw, but PMD as a subsidiary of DMC, yea.

Quote:
1. I mentioned in my original comment who I thought was responsible, and you brought it up in point 2. 2. Seeing as it is April, and the magazine did not come out on the first, it is probably an April Fools joke. 3. Is it subjective? Have you been watching motor vehicle trends? Especially GM? If you are, you are a liar. If you aren't, you have nothing to say. Just admit you had a bad thought and move on. |

Definitely the usual internet b.s. "An electric motor to start a... 372 cu V-8?"
Yeah - just like my Yukon. Describing that as a "hybrid" is beyond any BS that GM is capable of - that's approaching a Tesla marketing level of lies! |
The last Pontiac ever made was the G6 in 2010, pictured with assembly line workers.

I wonder what an ad like that actually costs? Probably about the same as 30 sec on Cleetus McFarland's YouTube channel.
|
Did it go somewhere? Mine are both in the garage.

I was thinking that, if anything, GM could just produce a little car called a GTO. You wouldn't need the whole Pontiac thing, and they could sell it at any dealership. But with the demise of these cars like the Mustang and the Camaro, the market is shifting to a completely different product solution.
But there's a ton of value in such a well known moniker. People who don't even know anything about cars recognize the brand. I'm sure that they're always exploring their options, knowing that they own it. |

A little perspective. I was asked by the senior instructor at my school if my 62 Catalina could be used for a "prop" for the graduating class picture last week. I drove it down to the school and placed it where I was told. Class of 18 general repair technicians. Average age, 20 years old. Lots of questions. Who made that car? Pontiac?. I have never heard of or seen a Catalina? Was that part of GM? Bench seat, 4-speed? Did they come like that? I have heard of Trans Ams, was that part of Pontiac? I thought Mitsubishi made those. 4 ash trays, that's just crazy!. These students were 5 years old when the "last" Pontiac was built. They are the future new cars buyers, not the age most of us are. Why would GM bring the brand back? BTW, the students were very respectful and really liked the car, but I did see one kinda shake his head and mutter, I just don't get this car. Not so different than the way some of us feel about the new electric stuff.
|
No women, too bad.
|
I like to think of it with this perspective; What were cars like 60 years before when we were twenty?
When I was twenty, I liked cars from the 30s and early 40s as well as those from the 60s but had no desire for a Model T or brass era vehicle. |
Online Fakes and photoshops etc. is on thing, a step further is a printed ad in a magazine. Dont know what to make of it, other than someone wanted to make a statement for the cost of a full page ad.
|
I always suspected they would use the T/A brand awareness to pump up some secret offering, likely electric and just for marketing purposes.
However, I think they rent the copyright to those fellers that convert Camaro's in Florida and sub-lease the rights from T/A racing club so I don't know how that would work. The timing is rite tho and T/A fanaticism hasn't never been hotter in the last 25 years. The Camaro is dead, the stang is un-challenged (pun intended), the vette is out of reach for commoners/pretending to be a ferrari, people who are aware of the brand have disposable income/not getting any younger, people that are not aware are not the target demo and any electric offering isn't exactly flying off the dealer lots. Never say never. |
I asked the GM guys, they said no. And Camaro is going away soon.
|
I guess the BalzerEV is the future then...lol
|
GM bringing back Pontiac?
So says car n Driver.
|
It's weird that GM would take the time and spend the money to create a full page ad in a major publication, but that said the ad itself does state it's bogus and Pontiac isn't coming back.
It's probably just some clever marketing to get people like us talking about GM. |
They’re all back to wasting money again. We haven’t learned anything.

Boring toasters

Clown show GM now. Glad I dont work there anymore. |
They can try. I believe they will never get back the styling, engineering that Pontiac engineering had, never. I'm glad in one respect that Pontiac isnt around to be involved in the policy making of today. My 2cts.

That back page costs 5K plus.
GM is going the way of The "Camaro SE" ( think Mach E) The advert lists the exact hybrid combo in the new Corvette Pace car you can see this weekend at Indy. Has motors up front and 6.2 out back. Based on a couple folks I know well, it would seem that the Firebird would be a corvette driveline in a Bird body ( been done before when GM moved production of Firebirds to Canada on the Cadillac platform.) The Cadillac "race platform" is a different, more elite market as is hinted on in the video HFR posted. So, with bean counters in mind, and Cadillac skinned like a Bird, could be a mostly a parts off the shelf Idea, with low engineering costs. All depends on the economy and that depends on this next election. |
Been following this like allot of people. Also, been back and forth with my own ideas of what GM and or Car and Driver are up to. I guess my conclusion is exactly what GM and Car and Driver were hoping for.......it's really hard to say. GM has been very protective of the Pontiac name, likeness and use for the past 15 years. I think GM is pretty surprised by the staying power of the Pontiac brand and legacy and doesn't want to miss a chance to monetize it. I also think they finally realize the monumental mistake they made by keeping the bland, older than old, Buick division in the US at least and killing off Pontiac. Buick has done nothing in the US in the last 15 years. There are huge holes in the GM Portfolio now which does open some opportunities for a few niche models under the Pontiac name. A new Hummer is already out so they have some history with it. It would cost little to slap some Pontiac stickers on some abomination of off the shelf junk they have laying around to sell a few thousand units. They may do it. Fun to watch, I guess.
|
If they could slap together something affordable for the youth that wasn't embarrassing I wouldn't be against it.

Don't care, this day and age if they came out with anything it would likely be an electric piece of cow dung anyway

My guess is that they were looking for a reaction. It literally says ‘make some noise’. I think it would be easy to engineer, develop and certify a vehicle and sell it under whatever brand you wanted when the time came. If people make noise- maybe they put the effort into the Pontiac brand. If not, it’s the next Camaro.
