1989 Pontiac too new for here
 

Hello! I just got my dad’s 1989 Pontiac Turbo ASC McLaren with only 7,034 miles. I am currently changing out fuel tank, injectors, pump and filter to see if it will start. Last fill up was 1996 ans last time driven was 2001. I am searching for Pontiac history to see details of this car. I was told it was a pace car at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Maybe in movie if Days of Thunder? Don’t see any with sunroof in movie but they only show a few sense with the pace car. If I shouldn’t be here because of age of car I understand. Thank you!

When I was in high school, my friend's parents had one. They're cool cars. Not too many around then, fewer around now. I think I may have even had a model kit of one.

I'm not sure what parts availability is for W-bodies of that vintage. You'd need a paper trail to support the movie and pace car claims. Best of luck with it and post some pics!

Always liked those cars. From what I remember, a pretty decent car, I'd buy one with that low mileage. Pontiac caught a lot of grief back then for the grooved moldings and such. A few years later they introduced the DOHC (Twin Dual Cam) V6.

I should have pics of one of those in a showroom in WV years ago . Found pics.

Thank you. Here are some pictures of the car. The one image is a close up of the holes on the console by the shifter. They told my dad it was from the radio at the speedway? Who knows but he is the only registered owner and he purchased it with 3800 miles.

It sure does. This thing is absolutely loaded. The window sticker was $26,095 for back in 1989. It's crazy!

My dad (longtime Pontiac and other GM brands salesman) had one as his company demonstrator, back in the day.

Going back even further, he had the first Pontiac Trans Am (Lucerne Blue, RA 400, 4spd) to ever hit my hometown as his demonstrator back in the fall of 1969.

What a great car. Even the newest pontiac is old! That car is more than eligible for the AACA. You should look into that organization. That car would score very high. I bought a GP new around '89. Same era as yours with the larger headlights. Ours was white, had a velour int. but otherwise loaded. It did not have the Heads up, and I am not sure if it came out the year after our car was built? It was a dealer leftover because it was a 5 speed. Ours was not cheap I remember the sticker price was over 20k and we got it for about 15k. One of the nicest cars I ever owned.
As far as being THE pace car, I dont want to pee in your corn flakes but I would take that claim with a grain of salt. It very well may have been a festival car though. At these races the manufacturer will loan the track a hundred cars or more for vip use during the race. It may have been one of those. I was at Daytona when the SSR truck paced. The hotel I stayed in was using their grounds to park the trucks until GM picked them back up. There was at least 100 of them all lined up, many with pace car decals. Days of thunder claim, who knows? and probably not a lot that would care. I think the car stands on its own merit of being in the condition that it is for 35 years!

I love those cars. I wanted one ever since one beat my stock 74 TA on the highway 30 odd years ago :D

My dad bought a new GP in ‘89;
At the time they seemed so futuristic - I loved that car.
Stuff like the little display at the front of the console only added to the “cool” factor to the 11 (or 12) year old.

Unfortunately he got rid of it, like every other car - he had it just long enough to lose a pile of money on it! ha-ha!

My girlfriend now wife bought an 89 GP as well. Black coupe w/ silver around the bottom, gray interior, nice car. We traded it in on a 94 GP 4 door when our son came along. That was also a nice car.

I seen tons of them back in the day...lusted after them as well...absolutely none now however

I have Pontiac brochure with that GP in it .
Some of the brochures don't have it pictured, just a white GP. They must have updated the brochure when that GP became available.

I always thought that was one of the toughest looking 80s Pontiac’s I drive one new for a couple days while my car was in the shop. My dad
S freind at Stephens nick pappas had it was a dealer brass hat car he loaned it to me. He’d do that I think hoping I’d buy one from time to time , did it w a 89 turbo TA shoulda bought that one.
Anyway I really liked that car and had forgotten all about them until this post. Great car happy your here in this boatf

They had some ultra cushy seats. I remember sinking into to them on a test drive. Price was too high though at the time. Around 25k in 91.
