WTB early to mid 70s qjet...
Hi:
I recently found out that my 455 Y code TA has a cheby carb from the previous owner that is likely due for a rebuild so I'm wondering if I should try to find something more appropriate. Is anyone selling an operational qjet or rebuildable that would work with my '74 shaker? I'm mostly cruising with some spirited driving. Unknown injun build. Some kind of performance mods, shift kit/auto, 3.08 posi/AC. Thanks! |
I have some;
There is also a guy just west of you that should have some - are you on Canadian Poncho? https://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/m938889/profile/ |

I'm a member just now but that link takes me nowhere for some reason. What is his handle? Maybe I already know him lol Thanks |
Pontiac Quadrajets before 1975 all used 750cfm fuel bowls;
The exceptions are: 1971 400/st & 455HO 1973-74 SD455 I have several, but only 750cfm Pontiac applications. I found a link HERE of one's I had offered a while back. I think I still have many of these (I have never been too worried about selling stuff, and don't list on eBay any more). I wouldn't sell anything that needed more than a light cleaning, gasket seat and replacement float without letting a prospective buyer know about it. I sold more carburetors in years bygone when I had a running car that I could swap the carb on to test run it. |
I have one 100% original High Performance 800 cfm 17054910 SR Rochester Quadrajet like new for 1973 455 SD.
$2250 incl. shipping overseas. |
Too rich for my blood...lol
I think I found a 75 one town over from me and I'm supposed to pick it up on Tuesday. Hoping for the best because she is still running like crap in the peak of show season 🙄 Thanks |
I'd be trying to track down the correctly coded carb for your car.

I'm in a pinch, non-#'s car with unknown engine build specs...
This is handy chart! |
YouŽll need a 1973-74 Pontiac hot air choke Quadrajet to fit your shaker.
And, 1972 and earlier uses a divorced choke located on the intake and 1975 and later uses a float bowl vent chimney located differently from the 1973-74 units and will make your air cleaner sit crooked. FWIW |

1970's Q-Jet
kingbuzzo,
I have a complete 1973 Q-Jet, # 7043266. It woulkd be a rebuildable core that I removed from a 1973 Grand Am w/ 400 and AT. Date Code: 1303, Application Code: JJ. If interested send me a private message. I'll need to pull it from storage to take photos. rockys1970 |
Thanks Rocky but I may have found two near me....I hope
|
what's the verdict?
I have an uncle that recently passed, and only earlier this week did I decide against heading your way for the memorial - otherwise I could have stopped off at Pascals to grab one... |
Oh sorry to hear that...condolences
Pascal gave me a two for one deal on a pair of '75's he had in stock. One is missing parts so hopefully the retiree down the road can make one out of two. I ordered the rebuild kit from Cliff on the 28th however it may have been faster coming on the slow boat from China. The courier sent it from OH, to NY, then TO, now it is in Winnipeg...I think Ruining my summer for sure... 😑 Hopefully it all works out and there isn't any surprises with the air cleaner/modified shaker setup. |

Glacial progress...update
Finally got back the rebuilt unit from the retiree down the road. Luckily my old carb self-healed somehow to get me thru last season but I'll get them swapped this spring hopefully. |
Ok finally getting around to this.
Looked up my old buddy as he has more experience with this but some questions: - is there a diagram of the vacuum config of how it is supposed to be setup because whoever did mine had no idea what they were doing - my egr equipment is missing so it is a hose direct to the carb right now - should there be a solenoid or something in between and where to get it? Thanks so much |

Thanks!
It looks like I'm missing two egr valves. Do you know where I cam source those? Checked CI and slummit. |
i have a late 73 455 motor/intake i can probally source them from. are you looking for any particular part number?

Unfortunately no, they are the TVV units in this diagram I believe:
|
I might have them... let me look.
|
based on visuals, it looks like I don't...
But between my last post and this one, a question occurred to me; You have a non-numbers '74 TA; You have chosen to run a '75 carb; Now you're asking about EGR/emmissions devisced under the premise that you would be hooking it up... Why? Most people defeat the emissions stuff because there is no real good reason to use any of it... I have five thermostatic valves in front of me which are (I believe) from 1973 though 1977 engines, but why would you want to have a functioning EGR if you have been running with a defeated or deleted one up to this point? Unless I have missed something, Manitoba does not have anything remotely resembling emissions inspections for vehicles this old... |
Yes sorry, update:
Spoke to Cliff and he suggested the same thing. I guess we don't need it and she is running better already. I misunderstood as I thought it would have better mileage or it was necessary. I guess I could put them in for appearances sake if the price is right. Thanks everyone for your help with this - that cheby carb is finally gone! |
