Documented 1972 WW4 GTO

3 Attachment(s)
I just acquired this car & while waiting for it to be shipped I wanted to start a thread for it since I haven’t seen many documented 72 WW4 GTO’s. This car was a special paint ordered car in starlight black, still mostly original, one repaint about 6 years ago & only having wearable items like the clutch & brakes replaced. No accidents, not molested & the seller purchased the car from the original owner in the next town over about 25 years ago, I’m proud to be the new caretaker of a special car like this & will post plenty of pictures once she gets here next week.

Congrat's on the purchase, I have always liked 72 GTO's but I have never actually owned one, and a WW4 car also! Nice!
Special paint order 68-72's are always interesting, So it was delivered with Starlight Black paint and a Wilderness Green endura bumper. Interesting. Does it still have the green bumper?

No, I believe the dealerships had to paint the bumpers in house on special paint cars so I guess Pontiac threw on one that was dark?

Another observation is that if I’m reading the build sheet correctly it was built in March which is why it has the 120 mph speedo, I haven’t verified the seat belts warning light but will when the car shows up next week.

Sorry to have to ask - but what does WW4 mean?

Nice find!

1972 is a good year for Pontiac A-Body. You got a good one with a very nice combination of options. Whoever ordered that car knew what they were doing with the WW4, W62 and Special Order Starlight Black Paint. They could have not gone without the W62 GTO option and save some money by ordering the $49 T41 Endura front end option to get that GTO look, but I'm glad they opted to spend more money to get those magical three letters "GTO". Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to see photos of your new find.

If you look at his shipping manifest (2nd photo, 1st post), it lists the option WW4 and what it includes.

They added a Wilderness Green Endura nose at the factory because no noses was painted in Starlight Black (I'm surprised it wasn't raw like the late build '71 OO Judge was) and I thought the mirrors were in primer, not body colored beforehand. They included a quart of 926-96459 (Starlight Black) paint in the trunk (no reducer added) to have painted by the dealership once it arrived.

Very cool car Carl, excited to see it!

camerjeff 02-23-2025 01:44 PM

I wonder if you got any credit when ordering an option group that either included a option that another selected option already had, like the 400 4bbl engine that was included in both the GTO option and the WW4 option? Or a price break on the Y80 Decor group that included a Custom Cushion steering wheel, when the NK3 Formula Steering wheel was purchased separately?

I have always wondered as my 1977 Astre Formula had the Custom Cushion steering wheel added for around $12 when the W66 Formula package included the Formula Steering Wheel at N/C on the package. In my cars case I think who ever ordered the car did not know that the Formula Wheel was included with the Formula package. Its funny as the Formula Wheel required the purchase of both power steering and a tilt column that were not included in the formula package but were added cost mandatory options with the W66 Formula option that increased the Formula option by over $200. And my car has both of those options but came with the 3 spoke Custom Cushion Steering Wheel.
The car was Built on the 1st day of Formula Astre production, and has a couple of irregularities, it should have charcoal outside sport mirrors, and it had body colored mirrors, and it did have the black out paint on the upper door window frames, but had the bright stainless trim added over the black out paint? So errors do happen in the assembly process

Eagerly awaiting Picture of the new to you 72 GTO!

WW4 pricing.

camerjeff 02-23-2025 03:24 PM

It looks like you did get a discount on the WW4 with the GTO option, thanks for posting that. That is one question answered

67Lemons 02-23-2025 04:49 PM

I’m really looking forward to getting the car & I’m not a collector so my intent is to drive this car like the previous two owners did, the car has almost 117k on the clock so it’s been loved like it was built for. Funny how this car came into my radar, I put a post up in the various FB groups looking for a driver GTO in my limited budget range. Of course there were plenty of comments about how it will never happen or I should keep dreaming, blah, blah, blah, my favorite comment was how it will be a “bondo buggy” But while all of that was happening I had plenty of people reach out with cars that were nice respectable drivers, some were over my budget of course but there was a few quality cars to choose from. When this owner reached out & mentioned that he had a black on black four speed I was immediately interested & asked if he could prove it was a GTO, he showed me the documentation & the rest is soon to be written history. As we all know the WW4 package doesn’t make it a $100k car but it does add to the unique history of this car for me making it the car I was obviously looking for but didn’t know.

She finally arrived last night after a terrible experience with the transport company, took a while but I’m glad she’s home finally. Wasn’t expecting the seller to send what he sent but he sent the original sales order, window sticker, protector plate & original prep sheet from the dealer.

Congrats, very cool original looking car there! And transport companies always take twice as long as they sell.
Glad you finally got it!

kingbuzzo 03-04-2025 12:37 PM

what a beauty...you must be so relieved

Sport71 03-04-2025 12:49 PM

That's a great '72! Love the color, documentation, and the pedigree ...

johnta1 03-04-2025 01:26 PM

Congrats!
Very good looking car!

:)

camerjeff 03-04-2025 01:33 PM

Gongrat's! Glad it finally arrived! I have been so Lucky with shippers on the 4 cars I have shipped. Its a Looker!

67Lemons 03-04-2025 06:41 PM

Thanks everyone, it was a little stressful sending money & dealing with a transport company but fortunately the seller was amazing & he was happy to see the car going to someone that would care for it like he did, the shipping company not so much….I’m just happy that it’s behind me now & the car is home where it belongs.

Stolen from other threads here but wanted to keep this info in this thread in case anyone else comes across one of these cars

Sport71 03-05-2025 12:13 PM

That car would look fantastic with some Polyglas G60-15s. Of course, you said you'd like to drive it a lot, so for that scenario, repro bias plys may not be desirable. I've got those on my '71. Drive is bearable, but they're not modern radials, by any stretch.

muscle_collector 03-05-2025 06:45 PM

what happened with the transport co

gto4door 03-08-2025 10:07 AM

Congratulations! Car was well worth the wait. Has this car always been in Texas?

67Lemons 03-09-2025 10:22 AM

Yes, the car has never spent a day outside of Texas until I got it. The seller purchased it from the original owner in the next town which was a few miles from the dealership.

The transport company IM Logistics was a nightmare, I had a hard date of when I needed the car before work travel which they continually ignored, the final day it was supposed to arrive was a Sunday before I left in which they had another equipment issue & didn’t meet so I had to reschedule my work trip costing me money in airfare, they refused to offer a discount telling me that they already paid for two repairs (on their own equipment) so they felt that they were compensating me enough by skipping the other two deliveries south of me to get my car to me by the following day, the manager was arrogant lying POS, blah blah, gives me heartburn just talking about the ordeal. Oh, I can’t forget the driver unloading the vehicle up the street from me & driving the vehicle through the construction zone of torn up pavement vs just calling me before unloading & asking how to get around it, just a two week ordeal that never needed to happen.

Congratulations on your new GTO .
WW4 cars rarely show up , they are unique vehicles.

I can't recall but 2 other 72 GTO's special ordered in Black.
Both were WW5 cars.

I had a 72 LeMans WW4 project car a few years ago, I sold it about 2 yrs ago. I've seen a few other LeMans WW4 cars, not all of them had the T41 option. Cool car you have there, especially a GTO in black.
