Oil filter with bypass

Looking and can't find any oil filters with built in bypass, found 1 fram-hp5 but not sure if quality is any good due to the rumors of Fram filters, also curios if wix 51258 has one or not. Thanks in advance

I .. THINK .. the Fram HP line is better built than regulars..

With the amount of offshoring today I don't trust anything but I have to buy something so I buy the higher price point of any given filter in hope of getting a product that meets minimal standards

mgarblik 04-04-2025 11:35 AM

No bypass valve on the 1258 WIX filter according to the specs. on fleet filter.com. It does have an anti-drainback valve.

"With the amount of offshoring today I don't trust anything"

Valid issue today.

Fwiw, many years ago when racing we used a HP2 racing filter. As research found, at least back then, their racing filter was a different construction than the regular off the shelf Fram filter.

Pontiacs have a bypass in the oil filter engine adapter.. Napa are WIX filters IIRC.

sdbob 04-04-2025 07:42 PM

I used HP2 s forever in my SDs then couldnt find them, never a problem. A friend used HP2s in his dirt track RAV. I guess now there different. I'm thinking going to Baldwin this year.

Fram HP Series Oil Filters HP2

For maximum performance and durability on the street or at the track, trust Fram HP Series oil filters. They offer twice the oil flow rate and four times the dirt-holding capacity of standard oil filters. Their extra-thick steel cans and heavier gauge tapping plates are designed to withstand the high pressures and flexing caused by demanding driving conditions. Tough steel end caps hold a spiral-shaped center tube to offer more durability and protection against collapse. Fram HP Series oil filters are compatible with all oil types and have been optimized for racing and high performance street cars.

From the RockAuto website

High Performance; Spin-on
FRAM Racing® Filters are optimized for both racing and high-performance street cars, and are compatible with all oil types. Feel confident knowing a heavy-gauge tapping plate and an extra-thick steel can will withstand the high pressure flexing caused by demanding driving conditions. A spiral-shaped center tube provides protection against collapse, and tough steel end caps add even more durability. A screen-over 22psi filter bypass valve provides additional protection against larger contaminants.

Features & Benefits:

Low-restriction racing media designed for high oil flow. The media features 94% efficiency @20 microns for excellent engine protection.
Silicone anti-drain back valve.
Recommended maximum oil flow: 10-18gpm, depending on model.
Maximum burst pressure: 350-500psi, depending on model.
Maximum operating pressure: 200psi on all models.

I just now noticed the Summit site stated "not available".
My apologies for any confusion caused.

Why plug Pontiac's original bypass in the filter adapter and then use a filter with bypass???

steve25 04-05-2025 06:44 AM

Agree 100% with the above!

Only if you plug the oil bypass in the oil filter adapter do you then need a filter with a bypass.

If you run a remote filter plumbed off the block without the oil filter adapter then you need a filter with a bypass.

But this brings up a few very important questions in my mind that I have not seen discussed here.

1)
Are you thinking the factory did not know what they where doing when the put a bypass in the oil filter adapter ?

2)
Do you think that the factory did not research the bypass volume / flow rate needed to keep the motor alive during bypass conditions, so you think you know more then the factory engineers in regards to this system?

3)
What makes you think that a filter with a bypass designed for another totally different motor can match the needed flow rate that Pontiac had in the stock adapter bypass?

When I looked into the details of the remote set up I used I went with two 2 Qt filters.

While the ones I used did have a bypass the flow rate of the two big filters ment that the bypasses never opened even with cold oil as long as it was not straight 50w and the air temperature was above 40 degrees .

joes455 04-05-2025 09:07 AM

Yes I'm running relocated oil filter and cooler.Lines are attached directly to tapped block. So I need a bypass style filter.Mainly for cold start ups and less wear on the composite distributor gear.

HWYSTR455 04-05-2025 09:15 AM

Moroso filters come in a number of configs.

HWYSTR455 04-05-2025 09:23 AM

Some choose to block the bypass on the OE adapter, and don't run a bypass filter. That's the point, is to ensure everything goes through the filter.

It has drawbacks, no bypass, as well as remote filter setups.

As long as you are aware of the potential issues, and keep an eye on it, then there usually isn't a need for a bypass.

Napa filters are no longer made by Wix, they changed to Premium Guard which is a decent filter but definitely not a Wix, the change happened about 2 years ago.

joes455 04-05-2025 09:49 AM

K&n is showing to have a bypass,is this correct?

steve25 04-05-2025 10:25 AM

Where it’s mounted do you have the room for a 1 Qt size filter?

The typical Chrysler / Ford 1Qt filters have a bypass in them but they still require a in engine bypass because they still can not handle high rpm flow volume.

joes455 04-05-2025 10:48 AM

OK k&n does not have bypass, but I just called oriellys for a fram hp5 and they crosses it over to a wix 51244 which has bypass and is 5 1/2" tall

With a remote oil filter and/or an accumulator, often the factory bolt-on oil filter adapter is eliminated. That is one of the only reasons I can think of.

I am not sure that is entirely true. Unless something has changed recently, Premium Guard is the 3rd choice product provider for NAPA in their Gold and Platinum series filters. For the Gold filters, Mann/Hummel/WIX is first choice, Champion Brands, is second, and Premium Guard is third. The NAPA "Performer" filters are made by Champion Brands and a few by Premium Guard as well. The thing I DON'T like is you can't tell from the box, what is inside. Same part numbers, many different countries, it's confusing, on purpose. I have NAPA Gold Filters on the shelf from, USA, Vietnam, Germany, China, Brazil, Mexico. I will say, I have not had a problem or issue with any of them.

I am running a threaded block adapter. One I made, but Similar to Butlers.
https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1234743

-10AN lines to a dual remote filter housing behind pass headlight
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/p...0aAkEsEALw_wcB

then through a Derale cooler and back to motor

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-15452

The Napa Gold 1515 filters that the remote housing uses have a bypass valve as well. I am just over 8L of oil total. Stock pan LOL. Seems to have been working well for many years.

The last two Napa shows that I worked only had the PG guy in attendance in the booth. After Mann purchased Wix things really went downhill with shipping which is why Napa switched is what I was told, who knows, things change daily with parts so they could be sourcing anywhere. PG is a good brand, I repped them for 4 years with no issues.

For the GTO I buy the Wix branded filters, for my daily drivers I buy the Lexus & Honda filters.

Agree the Premium Guard filters look good inside and out. We have a huge FRAM filter manufacturing plant about 10 miles from my house. Over 400 employees and they are building an addition. They make so many private label oil filters, about 75% of them, I have never heard of. Oil filters must be big, big, business!

Stumbled across this post while looking for more HP5 filters, which appear not to be available any longer :(

I liked the HP5 as it would clear my headers, and includes a screened bypass to keep the big chunks out in event of an issue. I run a plugged factory adapter with this filter, which helped save my butt a couple years ago when my windage tray broke loose. Rods were chewing up the tray, creating some metal artwork. This happened at Norwalk and of course could not hear the carnage over open headers and kept racing! Finally realized there was a problem when pump bypass was sticking open due to metal in the pump.

Tore it down and found lots of crap in pump and filter- but put the engine back together with the same "looked like new" bearings, etc. Nothing of significance made it through the filter or screened bypass. I was sold.

Maybe time to put my remote filter system back on...

HP5 is one of the best looking filters I have ever cut open and we have done a few different brands.

They used to be. I don't know who they're sourcing them from now.

Wix got bought-out by Mann + Hummel years ago. M+H is a "global" company, so the filters get made wherever they're cheapest this week. Many are made in the USA. Some are not. And you have to open the box to LOOK at the filter to find out where it's made.

Sure about that?

Cold oil doesn't open the bypass. RPM can open the bypass...if the filter is getting clogged.
