1970 Grand Prix PHS question
 

I recently bought a 1970 Grand Prix SJ with Leather Interior. The PHS shows a notation I have never seen before. It says 5 PCT Car on the lower left corner. Anybody know what that means?

Pre-owned (Pontiac used), registered (Oregon licensed) and sold with a discount to a dealer.

So, a zone car driven by a zone manager?

Yes, something like that.
Someone higher up in the command chain.
Most of them were at or below 5500 retail , yours was 6177.

3 months or 3000 miles personal use.
The trim tag build date should predate the invoice by a fair margin.

There would have been another invoice prior to this one where it was billed to the zone.
But it's becoming rarer for PHS to have copies of the multiple invoices on a single car.

Yes, it has a 455. Included in the SJ option. It has the original 370 hp 455.

25-997 , is because it was originally sent to - and used by a higher up at a Zone 25 office in Oregon.
Then it was charged off from 25-997 , and charged to dealer 25-182 in Washington on this invoice.

There would have been another invoice before this invoice ,
charging it to a Zone 25 office in Oregon.

Correct the SJ included the 455 HO , XF/64 engine
SJ package brought some inclusive features.

This is the sweetest driving car ever! I was looking for a 69 SJ 428 HO like the one I had when I was 18 years old. I like this car better due to the leather interior and the high compression 455. My old 69 was a serious fast car but it had the kiss of death in that it was 3 way Green, Limelight with dark Green interior and dark Green vinyl top. That would not be so bad in 2025 but in 1984 it was way out of style! I love the way this car is colored up. I will get some good pictures of it later today.😀

Also, this was a lady owned car. It has had one quality repaint. She put the Gold centered Appliance Striker mags and Grand Prix GT Radials on it and showed it as The Golden Girl!

The 5500 number meant where most vested employees were capped on their cars.
The employee who initially ordered and drove this car must have been so deeply vested that they didn't even have a cap on their cars.

The leather interior, pwr seat back locks, & pwr door locks are seldom seen 1970 GP options that pushed the MSRP up over the 6K. Believe saddle(?) & black were the only 2 color leather bucket seat interior options for '70.

I knew about rearward mounted/forward facing cassette decks , but don't think I was aware of 8tracks that way too. Cool.
Did pull a couple pedestal front mount 8tracks from GPs with no console.

At least in the late 60's & up into the 70's numerous Pontiac Zone employees had the ability to drive well loaded new models as demonstrators. Wasn't just the top managers. In the late Summer of '68, my Dad (worked for GMAC) special ordered our family's '69 Executive 428 6 pass wgn. Dad set it up so local zone 20 Pontiac rep (friend) drove the Executive wagon for 2 months. A great deal as this zone rep was in and out of Pontiac dealerships all over & could get any bugs worked out immediately. Previously, Dad had managed a similar deal with the same zone rep to drive what would my grandmother's '66 Ventura. Years later, when my parents moved N of OKC to Edmond, the Pontiac zone mgr & Pontiac zone distribution manager both lived in my folks neighborhood. Both zone execs drove new '81 Daytona Pacecars for a few months.

Man, that thingwaswas pimped out back in the day! Loaded up, and rocking some gold wheels!

This is correct.

I was a company vehicle driver for about 20 years and I was just a worker bee, buying between one and four vehicles per year.

I think the best I ever did was 38% off on a Suburban taking into consideration the mileage (7500 miles) and past model year discounts.

Thanks to PHS we see quite a good amount of these vested employee company cars.
Very exceptional to see a 69 - 70 company driver over 5500 .
Most of the uncapped guys or higher capped guys were probably getting loaded Bonnevilles and most of us don't follow those cars very heavily.

I think considerations were probably given not to go too nuts because they eventually were going to have to find buyers for these cars.
8track, wood wheel, cruise control could have pushed this one up to 6500

This first buyer of this car might have also done an insider deal getting it equipped how they wanted by a friend or contact within PMD zone 25.

Wow, I spy a Can Am hood in that last picture.

Yes. The Can Am is behind the hood in the garage. The previous owner removed the front clip when he installed the balanced and blueprinted engine. I had the seats reupholstered and haven’t worked on it in a while. It has a rowdy 400 with a 280 Comp Cam, ported 6X heads, headers, a 3500 stall converter, and a 3.23 posi. Car is loaded up with pw, pdl, tilt, cruise, and power trunk release. All original engine with machine work by Race Engine Design in Chattanooga, TN. They were one of the best but sadly now out of business.

very nice gp and collection. out of curiosity seeing the 69 ta with a/c where did it sell new? what is the 70 chevelle (396, ls5 ls6)?

Trans Am was sold new on Oklahoma. Chevelle is a 396 350 horse 4 speed with air. My favorite is the White 70 Judge. It is automatic with air, loaded with ps,pb. tilt, cruise, power seat, formula wheel, 8 track, California emissions cars with 60,000 miles.

was it in tulsa at milner pontiac? is it a 4 speed? with only 32 made, milner sold if i remember correctly at least 3 of them with ac. i have one.

It was sold at Scholfield Brothers Pontiac in Wichita, Kansas.

Yes, it is a 4 speed.

Car has been through a really nice restoration. Car was modified from as delivered condition to suit the owner. AC was installed and a hood tach was added to it also. I know that no one here likes any modifications to real 69 Trans Ams. I get it. For my personal preference, I have always loved hood tachs on all high performance Pontiacs and I have got to have cold AC if I am going to drive it. The level of detail on this car is amazing.

i owned a business in wichita for many years. there were a couple of them that ran around town in the 80's. couldnt ever get them to sell them. any idea when it left wichita?

I don’t know when it left Wichita. Story was that a woman owned the car and wanted AC and it was added to it when new. Probably a bogus story! Lol! I would really like to know some history about it. The car came out of a collection in Alabama where it had been for 14 years.

I talked with the original owner today. She is 85 years old. She is very sharp and a super nice person. I asked her about the history of the car and if the car was sold to her as a Pontiac zone car. She said the car had a few thousand miles on it and the selling dealer told her and her husband that a man had bought it and brought it back because his wife wanted a four door car. There was no mention of it being a brass hat car. My parents bought a new 66 Bonneville with a few thousand miles on it and the dealer told my Dad that a man had bought it and his wife didn’t think it was luxurious enough and came back and traded it in on a new 98 Oldsmobile. I wonder if dealers told thus type of thing to customers as a way of selling zone cars or as they to become known as program cars. Also, she worked at the telephone company and the car was always garaged.

She has 2 Cadillac Eldorados, a 1985, and a 2000 model. She said she was getting older and didn’t need to keep it any longer although she still loves the car. The car was always maintained by Keith Anderson who is also in the picture. He worked at the Pontiac dealership and then opened up his own shop. He overhauled the engine and painted the car. She said he took it apart and painted everything. I can tell you that the car had a beautiful finish. All of the interior is original. Keith also had the vinyl top installed for her. He sounds like a great guy. He has unfortunately passed on.
