Hagerty
I had a quote a few years ago from Hagerty, didn't switch and finally decided I should. I requested 135k (67 GTO, number matching, frame off restomod). Sent in some pics, answered some questions. The agent went to finalize, Hag says they need more pictures and more info.
Sent them more, they wanted more. Agent says it's likely the amount requested. I said, drop it to 100k then (after countless requests, questions, etc.) Asks for receipts, purchases, etc. I sent him a picture of two binders of receipts, and told him I had a third too. Then agent says they want a modified form filled out. I'm pretty pissed at this point. Fill out the form and submit. They come back and approve it at 85k. I call Hagerty and they say, sorry that's what underwriting approved. I ask if having it appraised would help. Nope. I see they went public 3 years ago, maybe they tightened? I have friends with them who are happy, a few with $100k+ cars who didn't go with any of this BS, but they have been with them for years. Do I bit the bullet and accept the 85k, or keep shopping? Grundy doesn't seem like a good choice, I see others have had good luck with American Collectors, but overall everyone likes Hagerty the best. Just looking for feedback Thanks |
I use State Farm. Agreed Value. Had to have it appraised. Covered for $117,000. Cost about $560 a year. Had a claim in with it, went very smooth.
|
Interesting. Thank you....one of my friends has his C10 with State Farm, but they write it under Hagerty.

We recently had a good discussion about Open Road Insurance. Maybe research them.

You mentioned “ agent “ …
Are you dealing directly with Hagerty Insurance ? If not, call them directly … @ https://www.hagerty.com/lp/classic-c...SAAEgJSpvD_BwE Jim |
Yes, I was working through local agent. After I received the 85k cap, I called Hagerty directly. Got nowhere.
|
I have Grundy agreed value at $100K. Why don't you think they are a good choice??
|
I had insured my car for a certain amount. They sent me a letter saying to increase the value to 100k minimum last winter.

I have all my old stuff thru them, and I've never had an issue getting the value I want. I just upped the insurance on the 70TA to 100k over the phone, and they didn't even blink. They were actually asking if I wanted to go higher lol
I'm guessing it's the restomod aspect that's throwing them off. Sometimes insurance companies get all screwy when they have to value a modified car. It's got to the point where I just tell them everything is stock, as any stated modifications is like speaking Chinese to them. |
I switched from Hagerty last year to American Collectors. Agreed price is now higher and annual rate much cheaper. No claims on either.

I switched from Hagerty to NCM, no claims with either but upped my coverage with NCM and saved $300

I had Hagerty and switched to Grundy 7 years ago. I found Hagerty had more restrictions on driving. Also I just upped my agreed value when I renewed this year.

https://www.grundy.com/classic-cars/ How Can I Use My Car? Grundy wants you to enjoy your car, not keep track of mileage like some programs with limitations. Therefore, we give you unlimited miles for pleasure driving and in collector car-oriented activities. It is even OK if occasionally you drive your collector car to work to show it off to friends. However, your collector car must not be used as a daily driver. We require you and all licensed drivers in your household to have a modern car for everyday use. When you have your car at home, it must be kept in an enclosed, secure garage when not in use. If you are away from home on extended outings your car is fully protected if you must park it outside, for example in a hotel parking lot. Grundy coverage includes Trip Interruption that reimburses you for hotel and repair costs in the event of a breakdown, and we also reimburse you for towing and labor charges up to $250. You can count on Grundy as you cruise. |

I used Hagerty's own online estimator tool for my Comp T/A and they initially denied coverage at that amount. I went through a local rep and he got it figured out. No issue with the GTO since I had appraisal documentation.

I started online but ended up being transferred to a person. Very simple transaction

I would have to agree that it's the modified ascpect which caused the issue with Hagerty. I don't have anything insured for that value (I have the Bonneville at $35,500 right now, which is probably a bit on the low side, but what she fetch? $40? $45? $50?). The point is that it's easier to peg a completely stock car to market values. The same can be said of any one-off vehicle.
That is not to say that Hagerty is any better than any of the other carriers. I used to have Condon & Skelly ages (and ages) ago. Hagerty gave me a better deal, and I currently have five cars with them (six, if I count the '68 De Ville in my brother's name), all stock. No problems with valuation (in fact, they even want me to increase the values of my two Safari projects). As to why they wouldn't accept an appraisal, I haven't a clue. |
I have my '75 Firebird (heavily modified) road race car with Hagerty. They didn't hesitate to insure it for $40k. If I would have asked for lots more, maybe they would be more fussy. I didn't get the optional on-track insurance. I'm sure it would be way too expensive

my opinion is that if the coverage isn’t what you want, go elsewhere.
regardless as to whom you go with, the rate will be directly tied to the insured value - so odds are you will end up paying a little more. I like hagerty because they are unique in my market at offering specialty insurance with no mileage ect limitations - their only real stickler is that it cannot be your daily driver. |

I have AXA classic car insurance bought thru a company named Leland West. They don’t push back much on the agreed value and for $50 extra per year they allow me to drive it to work 2x/week (obviously not very trackable but I rarely go beyond that).
It’s about $475 for a $65K stated value policy. |
Just dropped my 1969 Harley xlch with them. Saved a hundred dollars going to Progressive. Have my 1984 Peterbilt with State Farm. I do have 3 Pontiac's and a Jeep with them. Never a claim in over 25 yrs. but there always trying not let me opt out of Mi. P.I.P. coverage which saves me alot. Its a scam.

My State Farm agent has his seven cars insured with Hagerty. Probably says about all that needs to be said on that.
We probably have another factor at work here. Most years of GTO's have suffered a heavy decrease in value in the last few years. If I called up and tried to insure my GTO for what it is now insured for, any insurer would probably hang up on me. |
Well I had a very good conversation with a State Farm agent my friend uses, he should have been the guy I called first. Very informative, and he is a car guy too, so he understands . He said more than likely they will utilize their valuation tools to establish a value, but like he had stated, it doesn't take into account things like show quality finishes (mine is) where you have thousands just in the cut/buff process. I know I'll never insure it for what I have in , just want to have as much coverage as I can though.
Unfortunately I'm flagged now, unless I want to do a write up on the car and see if they will move the needle. He said his brother, who also has classic cars, simply insures with both Grundy and Hagerty. He sends the same info, and goes with whomever has the best terms. So he suggested I call Grundy. So to the point of the other Grundy users who replied, Grundy appears to operate very much the same as Hagerty. |
I left Hagerty years ago, my new carrier is cheaper, but you don’t get a magazine to beat the dog with.
Hagerty had a booth set up at the troy Traffic j@m before Woodward, I walked up to asked a few questions, the 2 girls were in such a deep talk between themselves they would even look up to talk. |
Don't want to hijack this thread, but what about us doing a frame off restoration with the car in literally hundreds of pieces? I'll start a new thread in THE LOBBY.

Interesting
Been using Hagerty for years and never had an issue creating a policy My Roadrunner and Model A both have agreed policies for $40k Didn't need any receipts, just sent in a few photos (both FAR from stock) On my 70 T/A, I started off with an agreed policy for $80k (again, just sent in a few photos), then they contacted me about a year later suggesting that I bump it up to $100k due to rising market value. I went ahead and did so Last year, they contacted me again suggesting that I bump it up to $120k for a $100 bucks more a year, but I declined and stuck with the $100k policy Up for renewal next month, so we'll see what they say this time around. |
