The cleanup has begun
 

My wife and I moved into our current home in 1992. I was on a car collecting spree for the ten years prior to that, and I had to stash a lot of car parts. I wrapped up a lot of stuff, put it in boxes in the bottom of closets throughout the house. As time went on, more stuff went on top of the boxes.

In the 35 years since moving in, I've forgotten what was in all of the boxes because I didn't mark the outside of the box.. There are a lot of rare Pontiac parts, plus a lot of stuff I forgot I had.

One of my closets has a bunch of old stereo equipment. I had a pretty nice Harmon Kardon Citation series stereo system with Infinity Reference Standard speakers. I also had a lot of albums and a few 45s. I've got albums from Blondie, Van Halen, Three Dog Night, Rare Earth, Pat Benetar, ELO, Alice Cooper, AC/DC, Asia, Journey, etc. My wife has a few albums up there too, but I'd like to toss them. Lionel Ritchie, Air Supply, and Rick Springfield are at the top of the list to toss.

It's going to be interesting digging through all of that old stuff.

i moved over 25 years ago and still havent unboxed numerous boxes.

You have my empathy. We moved 4 times with the beater and its boxed parts collection. It's extra work but I could not toss any of it. Way more fun to re-bond with car parts than winter jackets. Same with the stereo and vinyl. I finally tossed a set of Infinity speakers 2 years ago but still have my old Dynaco, AR XB, and albums. You are not alone.

Moved PA-East to PA-West, rid of rear axles, TH400 largess
Moved PA-AL rid of nice TH400 & engine stuff, some Wood Speakers.
Moved AL-to-PA-west onset of covid, and felt great relief to be back in PA) sold large TV, sold most all my wood speakers.
Moved PA-AL (bought sight-unseen hellhole, flipped in 3-months and moved to 5-acre rural retread; Cd-play with projector in Barn upper for movies, with invites.

Sold 68 GTO while in AL. Now building a 421 for my pristine 96 Towncar.

There's a point; wife wants to move back to PA to be a positive influence to the 8 grandkids. Just put offer on PA-west home ( realtor says some others are looking at it (uhuh). AL Neighbor (an expert welder from western PA wants 2 more TH400s built and a 4L80 built. He better get them cores to me soon.) So move up will include PMD engine, Beer can collection, and tube stereo hobby are the only largess compared to furnishings. I need to look at 2 pristine 95 Towncars with engine trouble before pulling up this carpet. :ranger: HIS

I wish I knew you collected beer cans. Somewhere around 1984 or 1985, I bought a 1971 GTO with right side front end damage. It was nothing special, just a 400 auto w/ac. I remember the owner saying he was drunk when he wrecked it. It sat in a field beside of my in-laws house until about ten years ago. After they passed away, I parted it out.

When I opened the trunk, this is what I found. My son opened one of the cans, and it really stunk.

Billy Beer was nasty 50 yrs ago, I can't imagine how bad it would be today. Most people who bought a six pack would drink one and pour the rest out (unless they were already drunk). I was in college when Billy Beer came out. It's definitely a novelty item.

The good ol' really really old days

I remember those days , but was very very young.

In my teens we laughed about seeing an old rusty beer can in the ditch that was triangle pierced.
Yeh , they rusted back then. Not aluminum

Funny. I collected beer cans in the '70s, too. Still have them all in a box or two in the basement (including one Billy Beer can...), and hoping to someday get them on a shelf in the car space with a lot of the other automobilia I've squirrelled away over the years. And which is in unlabeled boxes scattered around the basement amidst the boxes of Pontiac parts ...

I remember when I was in single digits my mom bought bargain brand can drinks in flavors made by Chek - with a check mark.
They had to be opened with triangle can opener.
But I think they were aluminum cans . Just more robust aluminum.
Most all other soda were still in glass bottles.

I never drank a beer that needed a triangle can opener.

The most interesting find on Sunday:

- One new unopened Charlie Pride album.

I went through a box of albums I had bought in the early 1970s through my college years, and found an unopened Charlie Pride album. I remember my mother loved Charlie Pride. I probably bought it as a present for mom, but found out she already had the same album. I guess it's too late to return it.

I found some interesting music. AC/DC, the Beatles, Pat Benetar, Meatloaf, Doobie Brothers, Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Asia, Van Halen, Three Dog Night, Paul McCartney & Wings, ELO, Grand Funk Railroad, Rare Earth, J. Geils Band, ZZ Top, and Styx. There were a few others, forgot who they were off the top of my head.

I also found some of my wife's albums. She had Olivia Newton John, Air Supply, Lionel Ritchie, and Rick Springfield. I really disliked Air Supply.

So should I hop in my truck and head over to help you clean out all that useless Pontiac parts and stereo equipment?

Maybe you can sell them as a lot (or three) to a nearby record shop - and cash in?

For the last couple years we have done summer family road trips, and every town has a used record shop that seems to be doing fine...

I have a record collection that started in earnest when LP's could be had on the cheap (like commonly seen in yard sales for $1/ea or less) - these days I've gone back to buying cd's because those can be had on average MUCH cheaper than any other format, except for on occasion cassettes (which I can play in my truck).

I need to do some research into where to take vintage electronics for updating. I have a Harmon Kardon Citation 17 pre-amp and a Citation 19 amplifier, along with a nice Dual turntable and Infinity Reference Standard 1.5 speakers. The amp and pre-amp are mid-1970s tech with discrete components.

I moved in 1992. At the time, my son was 5 yrs old and liked to mess with the stereo. Before moving, I put a lock on the cabinet doors to keep him from messing with it. After the move, I never set the stereo up at my new home. I've been told by multiple people that if I apply power to the system after 35 years, it will likely blow the caps.

One of my goals in retirement is to find somebody to go through it or find a source for the caps and replace them myself. I wasn't planning on getting rid of any albums, except for the Charlie Pride and the Air Supply albums.
