Bilsteins

I'm considering putting Bilsteins on the '67 LeMans. I've heard more positive than negative reviews on them, and their own site says that they work well with factory springs. We'll be replacing the springs as well of course, since they are original and worn out.
I was on their site and found the front shocks no problem. But they don't show rears for a '67 Pontiac A-body. I found this strange. Why wouldn't they have a complimenting shock for the rear. So I do what I always do, which is to input a Chevelle into the search box. Sure enough, there they are for a '67 Chevelle. I wasn't aware that there would be a difference between the Pontiac and Chevy rear ends. Is there a difference that would prevent me from using the rear ones spec'd for a Chevelle, or is this just an oversight on their part?

Same issue with my 67 Nova. Finally found Fox shocks for the front.

Have you tried calling Bilstein of America? I have not talked to them in a few years, but they used to be quite responsive and could even make custom stuff.

nashcar 05-01-2021 05:53 PM

I actually called them and they had no plans to make shocks for the front of a 67 Nova.

Scarebird 05-01-2021 06:59 PM

Konis work well.

Wow, in shopping around for the KONI's, it appears that they cost more than the Bilsteins.

I did call Bilstein and asked them about rear shocks for 67 GTO. They had no listing and gave no helpful info.
Gtorich...how did you come up with the part # for the rears? Thanks

Now that is a good question.............ive had them on the car for about 10 some years.........i really have crs...........im thinking i got that info from Bart on the forum.........sorry for not being much help.

I know they are on summit racing, seems to stop at 68 or so.............otherwise no problems with them on my 66.

Ok, did a search, had some things screwed up, i had the old # for bilsteins AK 2080, they said the 24-00924 would work, think Bart chimed in my post from April 22 2019, this is when i was looking for a replacement of the AK 2080 rear shocks from bilstein.

Kind of a pita, but got them in ok......Believe the post title was Bilstein AK2080........hope this clears up some of the confusion.

I bought these Bilsteins for my ‘64 Tempest about 12 years ago. The same ones will fit your ‘67, hopefully they’re still available.

66sprint6 05-02-2021 08:54 AM

That's all super helpful. I believe that for whatever reason, Bilstein didn't create a listing for a '67 Pontiac A-body and maybe they don't feel like creating one. But they are available so I'll grab them.

gtospieg 05-03-2021 07:06 AM

66sprint6...Where are you getting them? Part #s? Thanks.

66sprint6 05-03-2021 09:42 AM

I went directly to Bilstein for the part numbers. Then I just googled to get the best price. As it turns out, I can buy them directly from Bilstein in Canada. In the US, you have to buy from a retailer.
Here’s the current part numbers.

Hope that helps. I’ve seen them listed on EBay with the old part numbers as well (AK2020, etc).

Koni's are adjustable, Bilsteins are not. That doesn't mean the Konis are necessarily better but may offer increased flexibility if needed. With increased functionality, usually comes increased cost. My car has Koni but I put in a set of Bilsteins in a friend's C3 Vette and they were balanced perfectly for that car. Either shock is going to be a solid choice.

ZeGermanHam 05-03-2021 11:59 AM

Yeah, you can't go wrong with Bilstein or Koni. They're both high quality. Interestingly, I noticed that UMI Performance now supplies Bilstein shocks with their complete suspension packages rather than their own in-house UMI shocks that they used to include until very recently. They don't list the actual part numbers on their website, but I bet they'd provide that info if you contacted them.

Thanks for this. I’m running KYB’s and have been looking to upgrade.

Have you ordered them yet? Curious on fitment and ride quality.

66sprint6 05-05-2021 11:57 AM

I haven’t ordered yet, but I intend to shortly. I’ll definitely post a review after installing them.

mrennie 05-05-2021 08:51 PM

FYI, I checked prices on Bilstein Canada's site for front and rear shocks for my 70 GTO and even with the current 10% discount, Amazon Canada was cheaper and Summit Racing (with free Fedex shipping) was still lower than both.
