71 Formula Ram Air decal location
 

I'm trying to find the ram air decal location. My assy manual just got soaked due to a leak in the roof. So I can't look it up. If anyone has one they can take a picture of, I'd appreciate it.

I would put money on that being a little bit too forward.

In the 1970 assembly manual (which shows 1971 information), the specification is 3.38" from forward edge of hood scoop to forward edge of decal.

Keep in mind this was done on assembly line, so locations would vary...

The tendency for most seems to be placing it too far forward.

I would certainly think that the decal should always be behind the point where the scoop turns up and forward off of the hood.

That dimension of 3.38" seems way too far back to us, so we installed them where we thought they looked best on the '71...aligned with the upsweep of the scoop, or about 1" back from the scoop edge. On the '70 Formula 400, the RA decals were there when we acquired it, looks like about 1 3/4" back and they look OK to me. I have seen some Formulas that have them installed per the illustration and they look odd to me, but that is correct. I'm not sure if it's the same location for the '71 RA decals.

I seem to have observed that they are often not installed that far back (3.38" or roughly 3-3/8").

These decals are also on cars which have been restored, so I have assumed that the owner did as you did - and moved it forward some.

I do not know if the assembly manuals ever gave a different location, but that measurement isn't too far from the forward edge.

I just took a rough measurement on one of my hoods (it's behind stuff), and it looks like the forward edge is about 1.75 (or the better part of two inches) from where the fibreglass on the hood turns up to form the scoop- so the diagram is suggesting that the forward most edge of the decal should be a little over an inch back from where the fibreglass turns up.

Again, I would assume that this measurement was a nominal number, and intended to tell assembly line workers approximately where it should go - but not be a real world hard number of where they were installed - unlike a badge, where I would expect a jig of sorts would have been used to drill pilot holes.

I'm sure they never (or rarely) got installed 'by the book' going down the assembly line anyway.

There would have been no jig to place a decal!

On a related note, I had heard a while back of a later 70's TA that had different decals on each side of the shaker!

I am giving this a bump just incase anyone is looking for this information in the future.

We had jigs for all emblems and decals that did not have hard point locators (pins) on the assembly line at Lordstown for the Vegas, Astres, Monzas, Starfires, J2000s and Skyhawks while I worked there. They were typically made from non-marring HDPE or nylon so they could rest against the painted panel without scratching the paint. The one for that Ram Air decal would have located off the front of the snorkel and provided both the vertical start point and a level horizontal surface to line the decal up with.

First hand assembly working knowledge is exceedingly rare to come by!

I'm going to add my 2 cents, which isn't much.

I don't think the design/style guys were looking at the scoops when they decided where to place the decal. I think they stepped back and placed them on the scoop edge in line with the side marker. You know, like a so-so paint job, 20-footer.
