1972 Trans Crossmember Differences

I have a 72 GTO that originally had a 400 with turbo 400 trans. When I got the car it was missing the crossmember. I’m in the process of converting the car to an m22, but need to find a crossmember.

My question is what year(s) cross members will work? Does it have to be a 4spd crossmember or will a turbo 400 one work? Will any other BOP or Chevelle crossmembers work?

Thanks

Any 68-72 Pontiac A-Body cross members should work, EXCEPT convertibles which have a different length. The frame ends have rubber insulators and metal caps that bolt to the frame.

I believe Chevy units have tubular construction compared to the flat style Pontiac used. I think that Olds & Buicks used units similat to Pontiac.

Thanks - I’m guessing no difference 6cyl vs 350, etc

One thing I’ve found helpful is to check the catalog of a major reproduction parts supplier to identify what different year parts will interchange.

I remember checking the AMES catalog and saw that they sell the same crossmember for ‘64 - 72 hardtop cars and two different ones for ‘64 -‘67 and ‘68 -‘72 convertibles.

No different ones depending on what transmission was used, all the same.

Ames I would trust in that regard. Not the others.
