air cleaner size under a stock hood

One of the things I want to do this winter is change over the intake manifold and install a stock height single 4 barrel manifold (currently an offy dual quad) and have a play with quadrajet and holley carbs.

I will need to buy an air cleaner and I am curious what fits under the hood of a 68 GTO. Anyone use a round 16 inch air cleaner with a 4 inch element?
Or a round 14 inch with a 4 inch element?

I believe both of those air cleaners you mentioned will be fine with your car. I have a Holley on mine(69 GTO Ram Air Hood). With the Holley I have to use a spacer on top of the carburetor to prevent the air cleaner base from interfering with the throttle linkage. I have used both the 16” or the 14”.

here was my test method in my pre "keep it bone stock" days:

1... Measure the distance in a straight line from the endura nose lip to the air cleaner stud on your carb.

2... Measure the same distance from the front center tip of the hood back towards the center of the firewall and mark that point on the underside of the hood.

3... form a vertical rod of playdoh or silly putty and place it on the top of your stock air cleaner lid as close to the stud as possible, and place a small piece of paper over it. (so it doesn't stick to the hood)

4... close the hood and reopen the hood

5... measure the height of the putty above the top of the air cleaner

6... mark out the circumference of the aircleaner you plan to install from the mark you made on the underside of the hood.

7... eye ball the height variation of the under hood surface to see of any potential height issues and re measure those spots with putty if needed.

Should be good with a 14 x 3 .
