70-73 Tire pressure decals
 

Hello;

I was wondering if the combined knowledge here could come through for me again.

According to my reproduction catalogues there are three 70-72 Firebird tire decals (for inside the glove box door).

Unfortunaly my decal is pretty much shot - and I cannot be 110% sure it's the original one.

The cataloges show the following:

RN = 1970 Firebird (#DT596)
KM = 1972 Firebird (#DT260)
KN = 1972 Trans Am (#DT507)
KW = 1972 Trans Am (#DT507)

What throws me off is I can find no MPC information, and I can clearly see a "K" on my decal... the second charecture is looks to be either an 'M' or "N"...but it's a little too fragmented.

I presumed that even though my car was purchased with a 78-81 dash in place, that the fact that my trunk & glove box locks corresponded had me beleive that the glove box door was just swapped over to the new dash...
It is very possible that a glove box door from a 72 Firebird found it's way onto my car - because as I purchased it a '72 TA/Formula donated it's M22...

Can somoene please post the two letter codes that appeared on all (or any you know of) 1970-1973 Firebirds?

Here is what I believe to be the original tire label, denoted "KN" from my 04A Norwood-built
'71 TA. Note that it is a "KN" and lists F78x14, F70x14 and F60x15 as the available tires.

Here is a label from a friend's very original 05A Van Nuys-built 71 TA. Note that it is
now denoted "482399 rev 1 KN" and has FR60x15 added.

This is particularly interesting as it would indicate that a radial tire was available. I have
seen notes in the assembly manual indicating similar intentions although I think it is
pretty clear that radials were never actually offered until '73.

mine (73 formula) has KW, decal part no. 490__0 Rev. 1 the two blanks are either 84, 34, 81 or 31, decal is damaged at that part. will have to check the assy. manual

That 1st one definatly looks like the one that is in tatters on my glovebox door...

on a side note - the attached picture is the reproduction of the decal... wow does it suck when compared to the real deal!!

Whoops!! I just realised my first post was supposed to read the "KW" as the 1973 decal.
X-bird - what wheels/tires did your Formula come with from the factory?
Can you post a picture of it?

Can anyone else post pictures of their original decals - or their reproductions so that we can all compare??

Here's one of my tire decals;
Again, this is from a 1973 Firebird Formula originally equipped with "N98" 14x7" ralleys & "PL4" F70 x 14 (WL) tires

Y-99 listed on invoice at 87. pre-discount, which should have resulted in the F-60-15s, BUT optioning the rally IIs at 87. also should've bumped those to GR70-15s. nothing on my dealer invoice indicated the actual tires that were on it new. the tire inflation sticker lists the F70x14, F60x15 and GR70x15 at the bottom. i'll have to get a pic later.

sticker no. Usage
490008 KU (FS87 and FS87 D/C60. WS4. W66)
490009 KV (FS87 W/C60, D/WS4. W66 and FS87 W/W66 D/Y99)
490010 KW (FS87 W/WS4. Y99)

now i know my missing numbers are 01

now my next question, if one didn't opt for the space saver, then one received a full size spare, correct? this given that the Y-99 price without the space saver was less. car came with a narrow donut, but definitely not space saver style. might not even be correct at all for firebird or it might be the original unused. idk

Looked this up in my 70 Assembly manual, it shows the following:
482400 KM (D/WS4, W66)
428399 KN (W/WS4, W66)

On a couple of 70 Van Nuys build sheets that I have seen it does show the KN on a couple of Formula's and a KM on a Esprit listed in box 105 "Tire Press. label". Not sure what the difference would be, but would imagine it deals with the F60-15s since those wouldn't be available on the base or Esprit model.

I was fairly certain that I understood "W/WS4, W66" - but "B/"??? that confused the crap ot of me... and made me wonder if "W/" meant something else all together!!

Since the readily available reproductions look like crap, does anyone know if these are being made at better quality??

I would think that with our current ability to scan & reproduce items, that we should be able to make exact ringers for the original tire decals & emmissions decals...

I will take a look at the manual on Friday and get a page reference. Do you have an assembly manual? Was it from Year One?

actually come to think of it... this is the one piece of literature I don't have... I was thinking my Fisher service manual was this... and your last post made me realise I was wrong...

I guess I'll be buying one later this year.
I'll keep an eye at some swap meets, and if I come up empty, I'll buy the repop one from year one.

When ever I get the manual I will use this thread to find the info (I won't be "usubscribing" from this thread any time soon!)

The "D/" stands for delete (less, without, etc.). Get use to it when reading your assembly manual.

Tire vs maintenance vs fuel decals by year
 

Instead of making a new thread, I'm going to give this thread a fourteen year(!!) bump!

I just recently came to possess two more glove box doors, and think that this thread could use an update;
I searched high and low, and could find no other thread that tabulated information for the correct tire decals (or otherwise) for the glove box doors.

I think clarifying what years had what glove box decals would be a good thing, and unless my searches were flawed (I used our built in search engine; narrowed to this sub-foum) - I could find nothing...
I do recall seeing a partially photo shopped image of a tire decal here somewhere... but I sure cannot find it.

First;
Does anyone know when, or if, the tire decal was eliminated?
I have a spare glove box door that I bought ages ago (probably nearly a decade before I started this thread), and it does not appear to have ever had a tire decal on it.
If I had to guess, I'd wager it was from a 1979 Firebird, as that was by a long shot the most common year of Firebird that I pulled parts from.

So, I scuffed up my original glove box door some time after tearing my car apart;
I actually was able to source another correct (one year) glove box, and it has about 70% of the tire inflation decal - so that's nice... except it's a KM decal - not a KN like my original.

As to the two doors I just received:

One is a 1974 - as is clearly indicated by the presence of an "RTS" badge.
This one has only a "How to select proper gasoline" decal on it (#339203) - it looks as though it may have had a tire decal on the right side, but nothing is there now.

The other one I received is by my estimation a 1972 base/Esprit door.
This one has a KM rev. 4 decal - it also has a "vehicle safety maintenance schedule" (#3991751)

Now, my guess was that tire decals were eliminated somewhere after 1975, but Ames has them listed through to 1977;
The following is a combination of information gleaned here, and from the Ames catalog;

Curiously the Ames listing for the 'KM' decal (#FX107J; shown as 1972 Except TA) shows the correct letter code for the application, and the same rev number as the original I have here, but it has the wrong part number!?

I also noticed that the Ames catalog has the fuel decal as listed for 1972-1974, but I think this is in error;
The 'Vehicle safety maintenance' decal (which is on my assumed 1972 door) does not allow any room for the fuel decal;
I would guess that based on Giles post (post #2) that the maintenance decal arrived in 1971, and was discontinued when ever the fuel decal started to be used.
I could be mistaken, but I thought the 1973 Formula I had also had the maintenance schedule.
Maybe the maintenance decal was 1971-1973, and the fuel decal was 1974-1977 ??
The maintenance decal may lend an explanation why the shape of the (metal inside face) glove box door changed for 1971 - the 1970 doors lacked the large flat required for this decal.
I do seem to recall seeing the fuel decal more often than not.

Can anyone help me fill in the blanks for anyone looking to get a correct glove box door decals for their car?

1970 is the smaller size and is squared off like is #4 post. I'll try to post a picture of the original one on my glove box. looks just like the one in #4.
Can somebody check their 70. Mine is a 1st week of May 70.

Can someone who has an original 71 decal measure it and the stamped area where the decal is applied? The measurements for the stamped area for the 70 are roughly 3-1/8 by 2-3/4

Just to throw a wrench into the thread, this is from my 71 Trans am. It’s the original glove box door as far as I know. I could not see any evidence of a different sticker underneath this one.
No door sticker either.
