Basic timing question. I think.

If I change my initial timing from 16 to 14, will that prevent me from getting to the 34 total that I currently have? I've read all the suggested material on timing, still trying to fully understand. Thanks

yes unless you change the curve in it.Tom

If you move your initial timing from 16 to 14 it SHOULD move your total from 34 to 32. There are a few things that can change that assumption. But we'll stay basic for now.

Thanks for answering and being here for us less mechanically inclined.

I know where I want my total timing so I check that 1st.

Skidmark, What RPM does it become total?

The distributor springs and weights would determine how quick it would get to max advance. There is a slot that determines the max advance, so if it needs to be higher or lower the slot needs work.

Yours may be at 'max advance' because of rpm limit of engine.

Generally the max advance is used then the initial will be what it is for max advance. If initial is too high, the appropriate weights/springs and slot length would be changed.

So, basically if using for street, set the initial at what is needed, use vacuum advance for driving. Racing can use the total max advance. (higher rpm)

:)

John, I was all in at 2500-2800. I need to try that again, as my wife was having a hard time keeping the rpms up. Car was on jack stands and loud making her nervous. I'll recheck today and get a more precise rpm at all in timing.

Thanks

There is no need or benefits to alter the factory ignition settings, IF you feed the engine with proper amounts of A/F mixtures in ALL areas, idle, off-idle, main circuit and WOT circuit.
Igniting a too lean A/F mixture too early will NOT give your engine itīs full potential.

+1 with the caveat that you need to start from a stock distributor that has not had someone mess with the weights, springs, vac advance, and curves.

THEN you can start tuning.
