repop Glove box door fit

Been working on my Buddies 70 formula and I factory style rivited a repop plastic "shell" on the original glove box door frame . It looks way warped on top edges and the holes for mounting the hinge had to be elongaed, and Im still not happy. I had to change a few under warranty way back, but this fits worse.. Pics soon. Anyone used them? TY, FB

I didn't know that the glove box door front face was available - did you have to buy a repop door assembly, and remove the front off?

HWYSTR455 04-10-2024 12:37 PM

No, they only offer the glovebox face, not the whole assembly.

I bought a 2nd dash, 'minor' flaws when recovered, and the gaps on the edge of the glovebox door are pretty big.

Eh, it is what it is, should have compared by fitting the original door assembly on there, but didn't think about it.

My GTO dash/glovebox door was the same way, gaps too big, it was a first run, but by the time I got it all together it was too late to do anything about it.

Second Gen Complete Glove box door, minus lock and stop limiter arm are available now correct for 71 and up. I have Not seen, or tried one. I think I saw it at Firebird central, but not 100% on that. I was trying to get a 70 cover to fit better

HWYSTR455 04-10-2024 08:25 PM

Dang, I'm going to have to search that, thanks!

can someone offer a link or tell me where to look for the covers?

i have some spares, and i did find another good ‘70 to replace mine - which got scratched at some point in the last while;
but it would be nice to replace the cover on my original.

So, the '71 which had the same dash texture as the '70 dash, had the glove box door texture like the later dashes?

Pricey, but very nice it's available!

Only available in black. Still nice it's available!

The covers only are available in colors, did one for a friend with a red '80 T/A. It's nice not having to dye them.

Thank you for that - yours must be a newer catalog;
mine is an 'F22' - what printing is yours?

HWYSTR455 04-11-2024 10:06 AM

It's an F28, not sure when I got it. But I bought the last door prob 2-3 years ago.

Mike, the inside metal structure is unique to 1970, which takes a small tire sticker on the right side. So the Frame is unique. The cover with hinge fits them all. The texture in the cover is same as my 72. It is not an exact match to a 1970, but neither are the recovered dashes, from anyone.
F28 is current, you can get one free on the Ames website. Download, OR a free softbound catalog mailed free in the US. ,$10 USD outside the USA.

Didn't even realize that was inner and outer when I posted, I was focusing on the price which I thought was high. Now I see why you're calling it 71-up (which I'd call '72-up).

unruhjonny 04-12-2024 09:16 AM

forgetting the fact that the repop is manufactured for more retaining rivets than 1970;
has anyone compared the shape/perimeter (side by side and atop one another) the repop cover vs an original one?
if the gaps are bigger, that must mean they are smaller(?)

HWYSTR455 04-12-2024 09:29 AM

Wish I would have compared, but I prepped the door before I got the dash, and the old cover was trashed, so I pitched it.

I have installed a repop glove box door " cover" from Ames with the 2 extra drilled holes for the newer, more rugged frames 72 ish , up. I used factory 1/8" rivets. The upper right seems curved out a little more than it was. All 3 parts were sent to Al knoch, so the black would all match ( sem is what they use) . The dash was a horror show for fitting anything into it. Way to much foam used on areas that had none originally. This is on a 70 Formula

HWYSTR455 04-14-2024 08:04 AM

The foam around the instrument area on mine had too much foam and makes it difficult to install the instrument bezel.

The stereo area is the same way, had troubles installing the bezel.

The top leading edge is also wavy and is so tight against the frame some areas look like the frame may pop through.

The area where the lap/column cover is, is kind of puffy and not very 'square' to have an even gap around the cover.

Some of the corners are not shaped properly.

These areas are the same on my 70-72 A-body and the F-body dashes. So maybe it the process?

Both still look better than the cracked up and faded ones that were on there before, but for the money, one would think they should be near perfect.
