ANYONE EVER LOST A FINGER ON A TABLE SAW?

I've never lost a finger but I've been given one many times...............

A classmate did in wood class 55 yrs ago....still in shock he picked it up, went over to the teacher , put it on his desk and said "I lost this"....teacher fainted!

a friend of mine lost about 3/4" of his left index finger, not on a table saw , but on a plainer, 15 yrs ago...he got about 20 slices!

No; but I had a cousin loose two finger tips on a Band Saw. That event actually ended his pro-bowling career.

Saw a girl split her finger tip right down the middle, using a rivet machine, building Aluminum window awnings. Split the finger nail front to back and split the skin open.

Jack Gaddosh lost a couple of fingers in a drill press accident drilling thin sheet metal.

Saw that on tv while back. Totally awesome.
Nearly lost skin down to the knuckle once cleaning rust off a part on a 3.5 hp bench grinder(wire wheel).
Didnt even feel it till the blood started flow'n.
Hurt like an SOB minute later.

I very good friend of mine owns a woodworking business. He said it is VERY common for workers to be missing digits in that industry.

He almost lost 2 last year, luckily he had the blade height set just high enough for what he was cutting. The material got pinched and pulled it through the blade with his hand on top of it. He had about 20 or so stitches.

My woodworking shop teacher in High School was missing two fingers... first day of class he held up his hand and said "This can be a very dangerous class if you don't pay attention and listen up."

He had my attention. :oogle:

oh yeah I forgot another friend of mine...at 16 he had a motorcycle , an old beat up, with lots of stuff missing...among other things a kill switch , he usually just pulled the spark plug cap off to kill it...they had a farm in the country....one day his parents were out farming he showed off his bike on the yartd....drove around, then going to kill it he put his hand down towards the plug...got two fingers caught under the chain in front of the sprocket...not only did he cut them off , about a 1/4" also got crushed....he put the two fingers in his mouth (to keep body temp) took the family car , drove to the hospital, where they added the stumps back on...he had two fingers 1/4" shorter later...

I lost the tip of my left index finger this past winter. It is healed but numb and tingly at the same time.

It happens very fast. I hope to go another 30 years before it happens again.

Just looking at this thread makes me want to sell my table saw. Them damn things scare me when they are running.

Reading these posts makes me pucker you know where.

I lost my left finger tip in a table saw. Dull blade + hard wood + no push stick. It was a dumb-ass moment. Didn't even hurt or bleed much. Hand surgeon said if you cut one finger completely off they won't sew it back on figuring you'll be fine with nine. If you cut two digits off they will sew them both back on. If you cut a thumb off they will always sew it back on. ER nurse said table saw injuries are very common. They had a guy walk in once with his severed hand in a plastic bag.

I used to work on oil rigs -- a lot of the guys who worked on the drill floor were missing fingers.

Little know medical fact (or miracle, depending on your viewpoint): Humans can fully and perfectly re-grow/regenerate a fingertip, including the bone, muscle, vasculature, skin, nail and even the fingerprint, if and only if the wound is left open and not sewn shut or otherwise surgically manipulated. The regeneration seems to be more potent in the young and seems to be lost with age. This has been in the medical literature for around 40 years from my own research into this (by Cynthia Illingworth in the early 70's in England), although far from common knowledge or practice.

In typical capitalistic fashion, a biotech company is exploiting this little-known innate potential and claiming to one up nature though the use of "pixie dust" to induce fingertip regeneration, although their research is met with more then a little contention...:

I have a plastic surgeon friend at UVA conducting a related study with promising results, using a hands off (bad pun, I know :)) approach with severed digits, just cleaning and dressing the wound then letting nature takes is course to regrow the severed nub. Cool stuff. Though obviously not loosing the tip in the first place is the way to go, and the saw here is pretty darn nifty...

That saw was amazing!

I didn't lose my finger but I do have a scar where I ran it through a table saw. It split open from the tip back to the first joint and got part of the bone.
It is my left middle finger so I take every opportunity to show folks my wound!:D
