Carburetors

Anyone running a non Pontiac quadrajet on their sprint? I have a 67 Buick with divorced choke, should I replace jets and rods with the same size ones as the OHC quadrajet had originally?

I used to run early 80's Buick 252 V6 Carbs on OHC-6's, they worked just fine, just had to richen them up a bit.

It should work fine.

Running a Cadillac carb on my Wagon. Someone switched out everything to this one. Runs great.

John,

I would compare the primary jets & metering rods between the 67 Buick Q-jet the Stock OHC-6 Q-jet. If they are only a step or 2 richer I would try the Buick as is. If it runs to rich would the lean it out a step at a time.
I would not even mess with the secondaries.

Will do thanks. I've to rebuild the Buick carb so I'll check them.

When swapping Qjets from larger cubic inch engines to much smaller engines (And vice-versa) say a 400 to a 250. You are likely to run into difficulties getting the idle circuit to operate properly. Most will run out of adjustment range with the idle mixture screws.

Part of the factory calibrations is the size of some of the holes drilled in the idle circuit. In addition there are some differences in how the venturi's are assembled. The closer you can stay to the carburetor's designed cubic inch application the easier it will be to get nice idle characteristics.

That is one of the reasons I liked to use the Q-jet from the big Buick 252 V6's. They were the some of the last non electronic Q-jets made, and they were used on the same displacement engines.
But I don't think they would be any easier to find a good core or these days. I always thought a non turbo 301 carb from 78-80 would be a good option also. But I never found one to try out.
