1970 seat belts

1 Attachment(s)
I'm working on a 1970 Formula and want to know if these look like the original front seat belts. Specifically the outboard belt that's in a plastic sleeve. All the pictures I can find show a retractable belt. The label says Irvin model #2910 date 32A70. I know there should also be a shoulder belt that mounts to the roof that was missing. The build date of the car is 06A.

I think so. There are separate lap belts and shoulder belts. Those look just like the ones in my 1970 Formula.

The top pic is the outboard belt, yes looks like its correct. That said 2 female buckles bolt to the hump ( inboard) .
One for lap, second for shoulder. As I'm sure you know these females store in your console side clips.

Thanks for the response. I thought the belts were original to the car, but the only other 70 cars I've seen had a retractor belt on the outboard side.

I am going to chance contradicting a respected member of this forum;
Those lap belts are 1971 model year belts.

The female end is the same for 1970 & 1971, but as mentioned the correct 1970 male belt is a retractor belt.

The shoulder belts use the same female belt as the lap, but have a fixed length male belt attached to the roof.

I would suggest the complete absence of shoulder belts as a hit that your original belts were removed from your car.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking that may be the case just based on the research I've done. It's really tough to find any original 70 belts to compare them to

After looking, I might agree, but I have seen that long plastic set up on a deluxe belted car. ( 06D though, so it could be an exception) The retractor is a much shorter unit, just threw away 6 of them.. ( not black and nobody wanted them)

Sooner70 01-25-2023 01:03 PM

If anyone out there has a pair of the retractor belts in black I would be interested

Agreed, you are correct. 1970 one year only for outboard single retractor belt, male. They have a long hold up sleeve like Novas and Camaro.

Look for 69 70 Camaro and Nova. Same thing.

unruhjonny 01-25-2023 06:36 PM

oh, if they are the same as 1969 Camaros, you can probably buy them brand new!

Open Question to the group -

I don't remember how the date codes work on seatbelts anymore -
Is that the 32nd week of 1970 ?
Can't be 32nd day of January

Just quoting this because it was a good thought..

I'm not sure if the outer retractor sleeve on these 69's is as long as full correct 1970 , but google search does show New Front sets/pairs for 67-69 F-Body.
They would be pretty close., even if not exactly right

www.ss396.com show Deluxe Male/Female pair @ $160 (1 seat)

www.seatbeltsplus.com show Standard M/F pairs @ $340 (2 seats)
but the buckles look like half Deluxe/half Std cross - and the release buttons are starburst - not GM logo

Heartbeatcitycamaro shows some Standards that look about right but the buttons aren't blue
Looks like a GM release button from a Deluxe buckle
$170 per set and Back Ordered

Ames may offer them too , but I just checked some quick results that had pictures listed.

Appears you need to be extra inquisitive about the buttons on the Standard units.
Some just show a blurr , and will be starburst logo.

Baron Von Zeppelin 01-26-2023 12:17 AM

These won't pass critical judging , but they could help finish a car and make it legal to drive.
14 Colors including Bright Blue
Plastics and boots come painted to match the webbings.
Reman GM Buckles (not exactly early 2nd Gen Standard) with Blue GM buttons
$344 = 2 front lap belt sets

Those "might" could be late production 1970 belts , just not correct for your front seats.
A = Standard Belt
32nd week of 1970
Your car was built approx 22nd week 1970

Those could be rear belts from back seat of a Buick , as an example.
And could work for your rear seat too.

If you can slide the seat up and get good angle pictures of the front seat belt retractors , that would be a great help to him / us.
Its been so long since I opened the door on my 70 I can't remember exactly what the retractor is supposed to look like exactly.

The 67-69 F units might not be as close as thought.
But I saw some other retractors termed as universal for trucks and vans that might be another possibility.
And they were genuine GM new old stock.
And cheaper
And Deluxe M / F sets
