Vent window removal

Gentlemen:
Can I remove the vent window from my 64 grand prix without removing the door window?
I see that the vent pivot is a slip fit, rather than a rivet but I cannot push it down low enough to slip it out of the top pivot hole.
I have removed the vent regulator but it still doesn't drop low enough.
Thanks,
Mario 64

I think there should be a notch where if you swing the vent window to a certain position it allows it to be pushed down far enough.

thank you dataway:
that's the way it is on my 49 cadillac, but where that position is, i don't know. i found a thread here that shows a 63 vent window assembly removal but it is an entirely different style. it has three picts of the body manual that show removing the entire assembly without removing the door glass.
thanks for the effort, maybe more will chime in.

I know my 68 was a pain ... the weather strip had hardened up so much that the notch was almost impossible to find by feel.

I fiddled with it today and I got it out. See pict. The 4 nubbs have to line up (I think) with a slot. The vent had to be opened all the and then wiggled to get the nubs to line up.
Too dark in the garage so I couldn't see down the window track, but will see over the weekend. The bottom of the stem is broken so I have to weld an extension on the end of it. Otherwise the power transmission won't connect.

Yep ... same thing I went through .... and mine was even out of the door :)

The hole in the door that is covered by the weatherstripping has notches for the 4 nubs on the vent pivot shaft. You can see that the position of the notches dictates that you can only get the vent window out by turning it in one position. All the open. From what I can tell, the plate that it goes through sits between the upper and lower nubs.
Another fire put out. On to the shifter.
Thanks again,

Now that you got that figured out, it will be easier going in than taking out!

Mario64 03-11-2022 12:52 PM

that is correct sir. i just ordered new vent weather stripping from steele so when the motors are done i will reinstall them with the new rubbers. then that will be done i can get to the shifter.
thanks again.

hi guys:
both vents are back in with new weatherstripping. the weatherstripping went in very easy with the aid of dawn dish washing soap. i had the motors rebuild by frank rosenzweig in florida. he also rebuilt my power antenna. all three motors are like brand new, turnaround time was three weeks. nothing but good things to say about him. his email is frosenzw@tampabay.rr.com.
thanks for all the help. off to the shifter, now.
ciao,
