73 firebird rear frame rails in a 77 ?
 

as we all know,you can't get the lower fronts for 74 and up firebirds.so my question is,can i use 70-73 frame rails if cut what i need to repair my rusted out rails from the torque pocket back?I have the torque pockets for a 77 and underseat rear floor pan already.

have you posted this in the 77 section? I know you have seen my thread on my fwd and aft rail replacement hope that helped.

I don't have 100 percent info to help you with, I did look at the rear 77 rails and noticed the difference there is the way the very end of the rail attaches due to the difference in rear panels of the 73/77.

be glad to offer input that may help your research: I believe the torque box, and frame rails are the same from front all the way to the back EXCEPT the very rear of the rails due to tail panel attachment.

if it were me, I would have no issue getting the 70-73 full rails and cut to use as needed. also I would not hesitate at all to simply cut/weld as necessary to make the rear portion attach as needed to the 77 tail panel.

I would research pictures and find out if there are any differences in them. check camaro sights to beings there the same. I think nastyz28 is the sight I go to. very friendly helpfull folks.

you may notice in my thread I found most all my info on how to via other sources and online research. its why I posted my thread hoping to help the DIY guy and especially the first time DIY folks like me. again I was definitely monitoring your post even though its not info I needed I to wanted to know. my thread has a lot of views and I hope their from first time DIY guys that just dont like posting.

..........the torque box/front rails portion is pretty much cut and dried on location. when u remove the torque box along the rocker panel, use a saws all, you dont want to dent inward the rocker panel so its nice and straight for your new torque box to sit against and weld up.

on the rear portion, be sure and mark/measure the location for the leaf springs, u sure dont want to move the replacement portion inboard or outboard from original. its easy to mark and locate though.

definitely different in the rear and I see some different bends. pic are the rear 74-81 rails.

have you found any restoration videos on you tube? always someone doing a video restoring these cars that shows what your curious about.

i'm sure curious as to why the front is not available or full ones 74-81.

do your front rails look like the other 2 pics of my 70-73's? the copper weld thru pic is the front portion I cut from my full rails.

post pics of your fronts. you can also look for a video of a 74-81 and 70-73 for sale, often they show good views of underneath up on a lift u can make a good comparison.
