Your 67 Catalina assuming US built not Canadian. Has gear interchange 1965-1970 Pont B body cars 12 bolt 8.875 ring under a 10 bolt cover 31 spline bolt in axles. Using the 71-76 Yoke (pinion flange) also the some 71-76 Pont B stuff to as I understand ... Hard to find a gear lower than 2.93 in a Safe-T-Track , look for a parts car stick 3 spd-4 speed car or 2+2 for a 3.23 or 3.42 is tough to find, FABCraft Metalworks can help with possibly some new 3.55's not sure if any inventory though.

they turn up from time to time (usually the highway geared series) on the parts section of this forum and Franks but usually sell very quickly

PONTIAC LARRY 02-07-2022 03:29 PM

I had a 67 2+2 3.42 Safe T Track but sold it to a friend , will keep eye out

Petegto 02-07-2022 04:29 PM

Yes tried Franks they don’t have any.
Thanks

Hopefully this is allowed.... facebook user John M. Kuchtiak has two posi rear ends from a Buick Wildcat (should be a bolt-in to 65-70 big Pontiac)https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0ec4fc662b.jpg

Hi again if I bought the 66 posi rear from the Buick Wildcat do I need to change the lower control arms and don’t know if the Buick has bolt in or c clip axles?
He also has a complete pumpkin with the 3:42 gears if I can just use that from a Buick B body.

PONTIAC LARRY 02-09-2022 03:14 PM

RE: Buick rear , IDK what kind of gear size or size specs on gears or axles on those but I found a better picture and it looks dainty and has a weird square cover

PONTIAC LARRY 02-09-2022 03:26 PM

Not the gear ya want but here is a proper 67 Pont 2.73 Safe T Track and one could use a spacer or thick ring set of Fabcraft 3.55s if they are available $500 Nebraska

https://omaha.craigslist.org/pts/d/k...427130898.html

PONTIAC LARRY 02-09-2022 03:40 PM

Fabcraft shows their 3.55 (65-76 Pont B car) out of stock and the page for the spacer for Series 1 diffs (2.73 is Series II) shows that their 3.55 set does not require a spacer to be used on a Series 2 Posi 2.73-2.93-3.08

NOTE THAT FABCRAFT’S 3.55 GEAR SET FOR THE 8.875″ REAR END WILL WORK ON YOUR SERIES II CARRIER WITHOUT THIS SPACER ( the required longer ring gear bolts are not included — contact us for proper bolts )
FABCRAFT’S 3.55 GEAR SET WILL NOT WORK WITH A SERIES III CARRIER (3.23 THRU 4.33 )

Thanks Larry
I called Fab but nothing available as you mentioned. They are taking names on a list to see if they can get a bigger customer base in order to make it worth it for them to invest.
I’m going to call that other contact you sent me and see what’s up with that unit. Really don’t want 2:73 but it’s a start.
Thank you for your time.

Pete, I replied on Facebook to one of your posts to a link of a rear for 2 hours from Utica in Penn Yan NY , its a big 76 Buick Estate Wagon Posi for $450 and never mind its a wag leaf spring suspension it shows the familiar Pontiac cover like the 65-70 Pont B cars. The 8.875 lived on 71-76 in B cars beyond just Pont and still had 31 spl axles thru 76. Good chance its a Towing option car since its Posi and the tow perf axle option that year is a 3.23 vs a STD 2.93 , those guts should swap over to your 67 housing and it might be a 3.23 ! so I would be all over it !

Larry thank you I’ll try to find that on Facebook that would be a great find. The Craigslist ad you sent me yesterday I called the guy and sent him a email but he didn’t reply. I also received another reply from someone on this forum that he had one too but he never replied. Both rear ends had 2:73’s Posi’s for my car.
Really appreciate all your help and I keep trying to get this done.
I owe you a few beers!! Lol
Thanks again
Pete

check out this link, and then contact JD. Basically there is little nothing for the 65-70 Pontiac big-car rear, and stuff from other years or car lines will not work.

PONTIAC LARRY 02-11-2022 10:42 AM

What he linked above... 1965-1970 Pontiac (FULL SIZE CAR REAR) That is your main difference. The rings are the same 8.875 diameter But that is where the similarities STOP.
Ring gear bolts Pontiac are 7/16" x20 (Right and left hand thread early or late)
Ring gear bolt s Chevy are 3/8 x 24 (right hand thread only)
Pinion shaft on the Pontiac is 1.875
Pinion shaft on Chevy is 1.625
----- -- THIS is the main reason your not going to fit the Chevy gear in a Pontiac housing.
Pinion spline Pontiac is 28
pinion spline in the Chevy is 30
Pontiac rear is bolt in axle 31 spline and the Chevy is 30 spline c-clip axle

In 1971 -1976 The Pontiac rear was used in all the mid HP engine from 400- 350 cube motor with 4 bbl motors Gears will interchange from the 2 eras BUT you MUST use the yokes from each era with the era gears. 1971 -1976 era pinion spline is 30 not 28 like the 65-70 era. The gears will interchange
Axles will again NOT interchange because of the axle bearing differences and also the spline pitch was different too.

1977 -1985 there was a final form of this Pontiac rear and they really down sized it ...remember the cars in this era were way under powered so really the 10 bolt 8.5 would do the job just fine . pinion shaft decrease from 1.875 to 1.625 (basically the same 8.5 pinion was used in the 8.75 10 bot cover with 12 bolt ring design . It was used in the Caddy DeVille and wagons and maybe special tow package ordered cars of the era. Again NO PARTS in the aftermarket for this 8.75 rear.

Hope this help cover the Pontiac FULL SIZE car rear for you. and why you can not interchange the gear sets. Pinion shaft size is too small to transplant into the Pontiac housing - There could also be a different pinion to ring engagement height also But we never really went that far to check... Just not a BIG following for high performance ratios for the rear these days...Most cars have been demo derbied in the past. GM made steep gears for these rears and you can from time to time find a 3.73 3.90 4.33 gear set at a meet some one is selling that they have no idea what it fits we found (2) 4.33 gears that way 7-10 years ago. Sellers though they were truck gears...lol.

Good luck on the hunt.
